I think people was bored during pandemic and many sought out new hobby or old hobby such as toy collecting, cards, video games and etc that created nice boom period for modern products….like Gi Joe classified and Marvel Legends. Now people’s lives has went back normal a lot has simply less interest, plus economy isn’t doing so well. Seeing same thing happen with video games and movies so bad that Best Buy, Walmart , and few other retailers are completely removing physical media soon cause product isn’t moving. Toy market isn’t creating new consumers, most kids are simply not into toys these days…rather play on their phone or gaming system.
My theory is that most companies see how much the secondary market is, and then price it higher. Most people are willing to pay higher price on secondary markets once they're retired. So, these companies probably see us spending and would rather cut the middle man out and rise the prices to begin with. Lego is the biggest example. Some sets are 60% more than what they would have been a few years ago.
Very true David, some of these statues are obscenely priced. Buying these modern figures at full retail is not worth it. In your most recent convention video, the new retro card 90's Wolverine was selling for 20% below retail on the same week of its release. You know there's a problem when one of the most popular Marvel characters can't sell at full price. Don't even get me started on Star Wars figures. Some of those figures sit on shelves for years on end. While I don't collect super 7, I have taken notice of how poorly the values are holding up. The oversaturation of merchandise was bad enough, but the terrible content these franchises are pumping out is not connecting with the audience and is actively chasing away the ever-dwindling number of fans left. As I say quite often on your videos, anime is the only thing holding or gaining value, growing its fanbase and actually selling in stores. Great discussion video.
Sometimes if it's something I want I look at the online Retail stores. If it Sells out on 2 or more then it's probably safe to say its a Hot item and it's up to u if u want to play the game. Great disscusion. I heard that production is now falling dramatically as the companies react to the slow sales.
Retail in the USA is crazy... Companies produce more than enough for the USA market...unfortunately it is the DISTRIBUTION from many companies these days. Retail Corp . buyer's order so much and it all becomes a write off ... toy companies will sell off their inventory at pennies on the dollar to Liquidation stores. It really is amazing that many SKU's never show up here in CANADA . Plus retail pricing kills the fade very quick in toy aisles... Companies will only sit on inventory for so long ... then on to the next BIG TOY FADE.. GREAT VIDEO...Like these kind of discussions :)
In retail, often the shelf space ends up being more valuable than the product. If certain items keep ending up on clearance, eventually the store will stop carrying the line.
You two are so wise. So many good points. I would like to collect modern stuff, a lot of it is very cool but the prices are just nuts. I collect mostly 1/6 (original GI Joe 60s/70s) and newer Joes for customizing, photography and stop motion. I do buy other 1/6 but only if reasonably priced which is not very often. I do like the 1/12 scale stuff and get some for xmas/ fathers day but don't really have a big collection because of the prices. David's point about old stuff being more valuable because most of it was played with while most of new collectors will keep theirs boxed is my favorite point, so true, old stuff is better by far (toys not David and I, haha). Have a great night.
And the older toys were more sturdy as well. Anything I have loose from the 60s-80s is still functional, while modern stuff breaks right out of the packaging...
I do still pre-order quite a few things because a lot of the things I collect do sell out or don't really drop in price before they disappear, at least around where I live. There are several lines though that I'll wait on, just to see if they'll drop, mainly Hasbro and Super 7 stuff. Honestly with Legends, Black Series, Ultimates and Reaction I only buy them on clearance anymore. If prices go up any more though on the lines I want to keep up with they'll be clearance only as well and my collecting will drop off a cliff. As for Hanna-Barbera, Mcfarlane had that license for a bit. He made two waves and that was it. He showed off a third that never came out. I was loving it. There was so much he could have done with it. It's one thing I don't care for about Mcfarlane, except for a few licenses that he keeps cranking out he'll do a few random figures and that's it. It's annoying.
The real mind-freak about those MOTU Origins figures getting rereleased while being at Ollie's is that they were next to impossible to find because places like Target never bothered to actually put most of them out. They pretty much went straight to these liquidation outlets. I've heard that about a handful of lines. A lot of those Classified clearance figures only just hit retail, and they're already being liquidated. This is not a good sign. Part of me is jealous because I don't have any Ollie's or Ross here (I need to check Marshall's to see if they have anything), but part of me is kind of relieved because I really don't have anywhere to put them. lol At this point I'm winding down on most of my lines anyway. There's only a handful of MOTU Origins figures I'd want. I've been grabbing Super7 TMNT stuff when I see it at half price, and there's only a few more upcoming figures I want, and one that's on my wish list as a figure I don't think they'll make, but I would definitely buy it if they did. Other than that, I really only cherry pick classified and the odd figure from one line or another. I'm running out of space, and I have most of my toys from when I was a kid and/or updated versions of some of my favorites, so it seems like a really good jumping-off point.
When you buy retail it has a set price you know it ,then you wait unless you really want it. That price starts to drop you know how much you save from the set price. Buying vintage there is no set price it’s how much you are willing to pay for it. It’s not always what you can sell it for that counts but what you bought it for. Playmate Enterprise $40 I bought for $15. Ollie’s has Marvel legends from failed movies like Eternals or Wakanda forever or characters know one cares about. I don’t buy for investment sake,I just like it.

All very good points
I wonder if people aren’t really buying much and being very choosy . I have become that way and really feel better being that way
It's a smarter way to shop.

Hadn't thought about Lego...
It's worth it to me because I prefer in person shopping. If I don't like the price, I don't buy it.

Super7 seems to have gone full on mainstream now as one of the bigger companies. They are cranking out a lot of product...

I would think it would be in many of these companies best interest to back off of some of the production...

Definitely a gamble. But that risk as collector playing the long game. I score the transformers Ark at Ross.
Ross is another good one for finding clearance figures.

McFarlane seems to be deep into DC characters mostly, with a trickling down of this or that from time to time.
@@OpenByChance Yeah, at this point I think he's put out more DC figures than Spawn figures.

With so much product being pushed out all the time it's better to be more selective in the long run.
I still buy retail.
Great topic !!
Thanks!
@@OpenByChance actually keen to see your take on like budgetting..
They are making too much to fast as far as new toys go.
Sure looks that way.
I rather wait six months to a year. I don’t care about being the first to get an action figure.
I don't blame you!
