From what I read, Bain was a difficult woman to please. She was jealous of Catherine Schell and therefore in Bain’s contract, Schell wasn’t allowed to change into herself, like on The Dorcons, and never allowed a freeze frame on Schell. Only once at the end of The Metamorph but Bain and Landau was in the freeze frame as well with her. I thought that was unfair but Catherine Schell didn’t let it bother her. Schell has my complete respect. She’s the best!
I wanted Catherine Schell to appear more like she did in Guardian of Piri. Even though she is an alien life form, she can shapeshift. Now I know why that did not happen.
The scene above with the similar complexions is not a good example. It was in S2 that Barbara had the much more pale look. Lighting "two-shots" of her and Martin together, in which Barbara wanted flat lighting while Martin wanted harsher cross lighting, was the big challenge. I believe the lighting of Frank Watts was responsible for pulling it off in episodes like The Lambda Factor, where one can see the different complexions and lighting styles on each face applied as the two actors were in tight shots together.
I love Catherine Schell. So professional and diplomatic as a person, that added a lot to her star appeal. The situation could have easily degenerated into a Kate Mulgrew (that bitch was overcome with professional jealousy) vs Jeri Ryan situation on ST Voyager, but Cathy Schell had more style than that to allow such controversy to get between her and Babs Bain. Barbara Bain, lucky you! 😀
