It is not a gift from central government. Each and every city in India deserves metro service and that is what citizens should get, it is not a gift but a necessity unless India does not want to be like Africa or underdeveloped country.
Every other city has privatised metro while only Kolkata metro is central government funded.

Actually there are few reasons for operating the metro for short duration of the day.
1. First of all, the signalling system has not been installed on the route, as a result probably only 2 or 3 rakes are operating, hence the 40 min headway.
2. Kolkata metro opened Salt lake stadium to sector 5 section of east west metro. It was totally unprofitable. On Joka line also, it was planned to open the line once Majherhat station is completed, but it was opened from Taratala. So learning from east west line, the authorities might have reduced the hours of operation to reduce losses.
3. The passenger load from Taratala is probably not much. Once Majherhat station is opened, we may see increased hours of operation due to increased passenger load, as the station will provide seamless interconnectivity to the railway passengers.

In unison with your earlier blog on NJP Vande Bharat, once again, this blog is an eye opener. Only the residents of Behala, can understand the plight of the locales. Being a resident of this locality, since my birth, i.e., for the last 47 years, have no words to narrate the ordeal; we had to endure, during the last 12 years of it's construction. First of all it took over 12 years to commission a stretch of just 6 kms! A falacy in this age of high end technology. The first stretch of the North South metro in Kolkata, being underground, was commissioned in 12 years. However, the construction in that case started some 51 years ago, wayback in the year 1972, when hardly any modern technology was available & moreover it involved tunneling underneath the densest localities of Kolkata, in those days. What's more, it was the very first of its kind not only in the country, but in the entire South Asia !. Just look at the Dhaka Metro, the first stretch of around 6 kms was completed & opened in less than 5 years. Had been waiting for the service for the last 12 years, but in vain. As you have rightfully mentioned in your blog that, this service in fact; is of NO practical use whatsoever. Once again you have exposed what others couldn't. Therefore, hats off to your fearless & impartial reporting!

@travelwithSubhajit, I would like to say that Delhi Metro's service interval is 1 min during peak hours and 2 mins during lean hours. Though I live in Delhi but I have settled down at Kolkata.
We should raise our voice to give us superior quality service in Kolkata metro. Delhi metro is also government funded but their super quality trains are awesome.

Ektu time dao ei Metro thikthak e cholbe.
But main proshno ta hocche majherhat to esplanade er kaj ta kober moddhe sesh hobe estimated ?
