Nice review! After watching this video, I opted for the V1 over the V2. Here is why: 1. I preffer the charcoal darker color on the V1. 2. I like the option of having a waist strap (hip strap) if I'm carring heavy weight that it is more stable while biking. 3. I wonder if the magnetic holders for the shoulder strap may damage or mess my memory cards. 4. I like the side flaps pockets on the V1 because I can have all my charging cables and adapters and organized while I can see them all at the same time and avoiding the feeling that I misplased or lost one. 5. I bough it on eBay for $85.00 today!!!
I just got a V1 a week ago so I still had the option to return it. I have taken it on a trip to Europe and I gotta say those new side flaps take out so much storage. Those bigger bags that cover the side flaps allow for so much more stuff to fit in the the organization with the smaller pockets and the colored stiching is amazing on the V1. Thanks for the video, I will stick with my V1 after watching this.
Zojim4 these little garages on your V1 will sag soon enough if you use them enough. I have the V1 which I used for about a year and it took just a few months for the elasticity to become weak and not as tight. This was a widely reported problem with the bag and I’m sure that’s why Peak got rid of them.
Zojim4 I also like my V1. I’ve taken it on 6 trips including 2 Europe trips and I can fit a lot of stuff in them. I just wish the side pockets were a bit bigger on the V1. Other than that I like it.

I just received my V2 and love it!! I just don't like how there's not much organization pockets.. the only reason I went with version two is because its more rounded at the top. the materials are really nice and its great for an everyday bag. I was using the Nomatic bag and while it's a nice bag, it's just to small. like the length is to short. I can only fit my small lunch box and 32oz bottle in it. You can expand it but then it becomes really cumbersome. Great for traveling tho
Why did you point out the symmetry? I’ve not spotted that on my v1, but now I’ll look, and if it’s not symmetrical, it’ll annoy me now. Great summary though 👍
Thanks for the comparison. I have a V1 backpack (30L) and am looking to get the full zip version of the new backpack line. My trusty V1 is still doing the job but just want to add another option
I can’t unsee the unsymmetrical exterior pockets now. Ugh. Have you asked Peak if that’s purposefully done or whether it was a manufacturing error? Bought my V2 backpack 4 days ago, it came one day and after 3 hours of use the whole strap tore off from the left shoulder pad (while I was using side access) and fell on the floor. The magnets that hold the straps varied in strength as well, one was stronger than the other. On top of that the mag latch paint (in black) can scratch off with just your fingernails; Made sure to test that before I returned it. Overall Peak Design has some serious quality control issues, which if you're charging 300 + for a backpack you need to get your shit together
Most detailed review of this bag I have seen so far. Thanks. There's downside about adding too many magnets is the weight. From the spec sheet on PeakDesign site, an empty bag V2 weigh 2 KG!! That's a lot, and it's heavier than V1.
Cryozeal I just picked up the V2 with the sale and I think you got your spec sheets mixed up (maybe you’re looking at the 30L?) but the EDB 20L V2 is 1.66kg and the EDB 20L V1 is 1.88kg. The V2 is lighter than the V1.
@@whisperingdark I got that correct. 1.66 is the weight without dividers. When I said empty bag I meant without items inside but include dividers still. People who buy this bag usually use dividers anyway. This is what I copied from official site: 20L With Dividers: 2.01kg (4.43lb).
Thanks for the great review. Good job. I like your elastic strap holder hack. I had to modify my Everyday Messenger to fit my NOT Apple 15" laptop in the laptop compartment.
Just picked up the V1, in Australia they are on sale and for $80 less on their website. Supper happy with it, don’t see the extra value in the v2. Great comparison
So I found it interesting that you "called out" the offset side pockets--one is designed lower for a water bottle, while the taller/higher side is designed for a tripod. This is completely intentional.
When I first saw my V2 I thought I bought the wrong one and had to double check I didn't order the Ash by accident. I do agree I prefer the darker charcoal over the lighter one.
I use their 10L sling and have to get through few replacement to get a slightly more acceptable craftsmanship, but non of them are perfect like a mass produce bag from a reliable big brand
My impression is that in order to gin access to the side panels, without removing the pack completely, you tug on the little loop just below the slide on one of the straps, that strap loosens, and you move the pack off of that shoulder. Once you're done, you reposition the loose strap and tug on it to balance it with the other side. How does that technique work if you have the loose ends of the shoulder straps tied down?
It doesn't work if they're tied down. But the mod I made to the V1 continues to allow the action you described. The mod doesn't tie down the loose straps it's just an elastic loop that keeps the loose straps from dangling. If you look at the sternum strap that comes with the backpack it has the same elastic loop, I just created the same loop as that.
I went through ordering two ED backpacks and returning them because of ridiculous QC issues; just as I was going to try a third Lowepro came out with the Freeline 350. Lowepro clearly took A LOT of design cues from Peak Design, but it's a much better made bag, and I prefer the top opening to the PD, and more robust bottom padding as well. My advice... check out the Freeline before you spend the cash on the PD.
The V1 has also the leather accents, I have it myself. No reason to upgrade. V2 looks like a boring bag to me, to round and undefined. Love the sleeke look of the V1. Great video and comparison.
Awesome video! I'm in the market now and weirdly enough I cost to go for the v1 bc the side pockets are soooooooo much more functional for me. Thanks for pointing that out and going through the details
Thank you very much for this video. Great job with pointing out the differences. My only question would be with the new shoulder straps. Do you find the V2 straps more comfortable than the V1 shoulder straps? Prior to purchasing the V1, I found that to be the most common complaint. I have to admit myself, under heavier loads when I have to bring along more camera gear, after a while the straps tend to dig into my shoulders. The padding on the straps just isn't enough. Comments/thoughts?
Thanks for a the thorough look at v2. V2 has gone backwards in design rather badly. The loss of the side pocket covers and organizers is a deal breaker. Another problem with V1 was the shoulder strap buckles keep slipping if you have the bag loaded. Too bad Peak has stopped innovating.
I had a black V1 and I had the strap slipping issue (shoulder strap got loose as you walked), my second V1 didn't have the issue. I can confirm my V2 also doesn't have the strap slipping issue.
I have a V1 and your video convinced me not to upgrade. Thanks. Also, mine is different than your V1, Mine does have the leather accents like your V2 and seems to be way more symmetrical (but not perfect). I wonder if there are different iterations of the V1.
V1 is much better than V2. I love the organization of the side pockets. I had put in my laptop and iPad with no problem. I have the black version and everybody compliments me.
On the Version 1 I tucked the dangling straps back into the side pockets through the pass through for the hip strap. That worked well. Not an option on V2.
I kickstarter’d the original 20L EDB (charcoal). PD’s 20-40% sale just ended but I did order a V2 20L EDB (also charcoal) for around $200 so this video caught my eye. The V2 just arrived and here are my additional thoughts to yours: - the V2 does feel less substantial but looking at the specs the V2 weighs 3.66lbs/1.66kg whereas the V1 weighs 4.0lbs/1.88kg (website stats). So one could say its more ‘cheaply’ made, another could say they addressed the complaint that an empty V1 felt too heavy. - the straps are more comfortable than V1 (addresses another major complaint about the V1) - the V2 side compartments now being half open is controversial. The good is that it’s easier to reach the upper side compartment contents when the bag is opened from the top (V1 you could kind of also if you unzip it half way down first). Of course the bad is you can’t stuff as many loose items like the V1 as shown in your review and for photographers, the exposed zippers now being in the middle could potentially scratch camera gear. - I also like that the dividers now have indicators to help you better place them inside the bag. - I like the magnets for the shoulder straps that cling to the back, cleans up the backpack a lot more when you sit it down or for storage - the laptop/tablet storage area is definitely roomier than V1. V2 I can now comfortably fit a thick 13” MacBook Pro and a 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 with keyboard folio. And now some ‘personal’ additional shortfalls: - the shoulder straps and sternum strap ends no longer have ‘finger’ loops for you to pull to tighten. On the V2, they’re replaced with thicker double stitched ends (not as easy to grip and pull unlike with the loops) - the top zipper is now located on the V2 rear and an unexpected shortfall is that the side compartment zipper ‘anti-theft’ loops can longer reach/lock the rear zipper. But I guess if you’re wearing the backpack the rear zipper would be very difficult for a thief to reach without you noticing. If we’re ONLY talking about PD EDB bags, I think the V2 is good for non photographers who want a lighter pack with more comfortable straps. The V1 is more rugged and (heavy) duty with better internal storage and protection for camera gear (mainly no exposed middle zipper from the side compartments). I wouldn’t pay regular price for the V2 but with the 20% sale that just ended, and because my wife claimed my V1, the V2 is a more reasonable pill to swallow. Regarding PD’s warranty, I have claimed PD life warranty for issues before and they legitimately stand behind this warranty if you ever come across any manufacturer issues that causes usage fail in any of their bags.
V1 design is far superior in my opinion. Also because I love the Charcoal-red rather than light charcoal-leather. The leather looks disgusting to me and doesn’t complement the bag compared to Charcoal-red. Love the review, gonna pick up a V1.
@@wonkedI got an exact V1 in charcoal. the laptop compartment indeed a bit cramped and got my 15" laptop squashed inside. Glad they revamped it to be spacier inside.
I have a V1 and a Zip 15L+20L. It was disappointing to see that they simplified the inner side pocket compartments. I thought it was simplified just for the Zip, and that the EBD V2 would keep all the different tiny pocket sizes! Thanks for the great comparison video!
Patrick, when you say “1 bag travel”, do you mean just the one bag for all camera gear and clothing as well? Or this as a “1 camera bag” that is a companion to a separate bag for clothing? Depending on your set up it’ll be a very tight fit for clothing, toiletries, and camera equipment inside the 20L EDB.
I will also add, since my original comment I have sold my 20L EDB, 20L EDB Zip and bought the V2. Love the V2. However, the EDB Zip is easier utilise full use of the complete 20L of storage capacity. I have reviewed all the bags on the website Shotkit if you want to see.
@@creativebytommy Thank you. It was great reading your reviews. I was really close to buying the zip until I visited the flagship store in San Francisco and got sold on the mag latch because of the top easy access. Now to decide on 20/30L. One bag travel meaning no camera gear
Visually it seems the upper sides of the bag is better tightened up under the flap so that may be there is less risk of water entering the bag, but you didn't show that in detail enough
Nice review. Many improvements but I must say that the new pockets in the side flaps seem like a step backwards. I have all kinds of stuff hidden in there in my v1. I fear it would not fit in the v2.
It if helps, I managed to fit everything I had in the side pockets of the V1 into the new side pockets of the V2. It's a little bit tight but it does still work.
Wonk thanks! I have a platypod and a 6-7 inch maglight plus a couple of full sized pens and reading glasses. I was worried they are all too long to fit. What do you think? I’m sure all my batteries and circular filters etc would be fine.
Unfortunately I don't carry the same equipment you do but I just had a quick look and because the side pockets are now separated into an upper and lower portion longer items don't fit, the V1 will definitely be more versatile.
The magnets are not super powerful so I don't think there will be a problem. I've placed my laptop and iPad in the compartment and so far, touch wood, everything still works.
Hey, Thank you for the comparison vedio really helped me to choose and I’m going for the v2 but May I ask if they fixed the shoulder straps issue , I’ve heard from other reviews it was very hard padding which was uncomfortable , Did they fix this issue in the v2 ?
Hi from France, I am surprised to not have seen comments about (for me) the worst defect of version 1, namely, the hellish noise produced by this bag when worn, the source being the high point of attachment of the suspenders .... Unless I came across a faulty copy, version 2 does not seem to have progress in this regard...
My V1 bag made a slight squeak at the top anchor points. I've seen other V1 bags that didn't have this. My V2 doesn't squeak but because then quality varies so much amongst bags it's hard to say if the one you get will squeak or not =(
That asymmetry really, really bugs me. Right now, I am about customizing a backpack, and some things are not 100 % symmetrical. But I am not a professional at sewing, so that's fine here. But a commercially produced bag at this price? I can't forgive that. I really hope your packs are an exception (but with two bags....hmmmm, debatable?). A bag at this price must not have any faults regarding manufacturing. Sure you may note apects you might not like during usage, but that is another thing.
@@edarioq I've just received my wandrd bagpack and it's a pretty good alternative. great design and functionalities. I had the peak design V1 but it makes so much noise when i walk and the zipper broke so I decided to find an alternative
It is, but it depends on how much you pack into it. I have stowed this under the seat in front of me before on a plane but it's not the most comfortable.
Are these bags water resistant or waterproof and can be carried in the rain without the inside compartments getting wet? Probably not waterproof? Thanks.
They are water resistant. I took the bag on a water ride (Jurassic Park water ride at Disneyland) and I got completely soaked along with the bag but everything inside (my Sony A7III) remained completely dry.
Hey there, loved the comparison. Still not sure if it's worth updating, definitely love the black version of the V2 bag. I actually didn't know that the V2 bag is not symmetrical, as you have pointed out, very weird. However I did like your custom modification regarding the straps which you showcased at the end of the video. Could you maybe give me a quick rundown what exactly that was and how you did it? I would love to replicate that aswell since I have always hated the looks of them. Cheers!
The mod is super simple. I took some elastic cloth, it's the same elastic on shorts/briefs that go around the waist. I bought the elastic from a local dollar shop and basically just cut it to size and wrapped it around the loose strap area and sowed the elastic together forming a loop. It's a bit hard to describe in words but I hope that made sense.
Hey, thanks a lot the detailed comparison. I have a few more questions about the bag. Hope you can spend some time for my doubts here! :) 1. Does the V2 fits more item than the V1 when the maglatch is at the bottom latch? Noticed on the official site stated V2 is 22L whereas V1 is 18L when compressed. 2. How do the new material feel? Are there any changes there? 3. I have also watched your V1 review video comparing the Charcoal and Black. I have the V1 Black and it has the rough/scratchy feel on the external material. How does it compare to the Charcoal 1? Was thinking if I should go for Charcoal if I'm to get the V2. Thanks a lot in advance!!
1. The V2 seems to be ever so slightly larger, but it's so insignificant that you can treat it as the same size as the V1 2. The material feels basically exactly the same both internal and external. The straps are softer and more comfortable though. 3. It seems the same, a rough scratchy material. Hope this helps.
@@wonked I just got my v1 backpack exchanged due to the zippers and while I like to have the updates one, the differences is not enough for me to spend on one. personally, I never felt that the v1 straps are uncomfortable. I'll be getting some slings and maybe a totepack instead.
I have two V1s in different colours. V2 seems like a minimal update, just more magnets. Probably not worth the upgrade, especially with the simplified inner side pockets. I love the setup in the V1, the new minimalist pockets is a dealbreaker :/
Thanks for the veery thorough review. To me Peak is another tyerm for "over." Those bags are over designed. They forgot that the primary purpose is still to carry cameras and lenses.
Any comments on the side door zippers? Mine broke after nearly two years, and PD is upgrading me to a V2, but I'm wondering whether new zippers are more sturdy?
I keep all the small/loose gear in the smaller zippered side pockets. The upper non-zipper pocket do have a magnetic closure but they do still have some gaps in the opening so I tend to place larger/items that don't tend to fall out in those.
Corrections/additions:
- V1 has four external carry straps as well, the second pair are pre-attached and stored in the side pockets.
- The V2 straps are much softer and more comfortable than the V1s.
Wonk In the V2 Version all the straps where pre attached on mine. Thanks for the very good review!

Wow thanks for the recommendation, I've been trying for a long time to find a backpack that looks so much like shit.
The V1 has also the leather accents, I have it myself. No reason to upgrade. V2 looks like a boring bag to me, to round and undefined. Love the sleeke look of the V1. Great video and comparison.
Great comparison! Thank you for putting this together
Very in depth video! Well done! Thank you!
Excellent comparison, thank you very much!
The loss of the waist straps is break it sort of thing for me. Thanks for the review.
The V2 straps are definitely softer and more comfortable than the V1s. The padding is also slightly thicker.
just got a V2 thank you i really wish they would have added the straps like you did.where did you get the material
I just got it from a local dollar shop or you can check any shop that sells fabrics or sowing materials.
where did you get the black/red color way?l
Thanks for a the thorough look at v2. V2 has gone backwards in design rather badly. The loss of the side pocket covers and organizers is a deal breaker. Another problem with V1 was the shoulder strap buckles keep slipping if you have the bag loaded. Too bad Peak has stopped innovating.
I had a black V1 and I had the strap slipping issue (shoulder strap got loose as you walked), my second V1 didn't have the issue. I can confirm my V2 also doesn't have the strap slipping issue.
Awesome video! Why in the world aren't they symmetrical ?? You're right, for that kind of price it should be done right.
Very helpful video, thanks for making this
Excellent review. Good job on noticing that asymmetry. I think I'd be pissed af noticing it myself in a backpack for 300$
I have a V1 and your video convinced me not to upgrade. Thanks. Also, mine is different than your V1, Mine does have the leather accents like your V2 and seems to be way more symmetrical (but not perfect). I wonder if there are different iterations of the V1.
Hi, do you find the V2's shoulder straps more comfortable than the V1's, when it's pretty loaded?
Yep the V2 straps are definitely more comfortable than the V1 loaded or not.
V1 is much better than V2. I love the organization of the side pockets. I had put in my laptop and iPad with no problem. I have the black version and everybody compliments me.
This video was very well made.
Will also add the elastic to the straps I think.
Thank you for the compliment! The elastic straps make a world of difference =).
On the Version 1 I tucked the dangling straps back into the side pockets through the pass through for the hip strap. That worked well. Not an option on V2.
@@wonked can you share where did you get the elastic bands please? Thanks.
@@mickeymanevich1246 I just got them at a local dollar shop in Sydney: Hot Dollar
@@wonked I see, thought that maybe you got them online.... Thanks
Excellent review! Thank you for your efforts.
Thank you for the most complete walkthrough
I kickstarter’d the original 20L EDB (charcoal). PD’s 20-40% sale just ended but I did order a V2 20L EDB (also charcoal) for around $200 so this video caught my eye.
The V2 just arrived and here are my additional thoughts to yours:
- the V2 does feel less substantial but looking at the specs the V2 weighs 3.66lbs/1.66kg whereas the V1 weighs 4.0lbs/1.88kg (website stats). So one could say its more ‘cheaply’ made, another could say they addressed the complaint that an empty V1 felt too heavy.
- the straps are more comfortable than V1 (addresses another major complaint about the V1)
- the V2 side compartments now being half open is controversial.
- I like the magnets for the shoulder straps that cling to the back, cleans up the backpack a lot more when you sit it down or for storage
- the laptop/tablet storage area is definitely roomier than V1. V2 I can now comfortably fit a thick 13” MacBook Pro and a 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 with keyboard folio.
And now some ‘personal’ additional shortfalls:
- the shoulder straps and sternum strap ends no longer have ‘finger’ loops for you to pull to tighten. On the V2, they’re replaced with thicker double stitched ends (not as easy to grip and pull unlike with the loops)
- the top zipper is now located on the V2 rear and an unexpected shortfall is that the side compartment zipper ‘anti-theft’ loops can longer reach/lock the rear zipper.
Very informative and detailed, thank you
Glad it was useful!
Do you think you would be able to use the 20L zip for one bag travel? Trying to decide between it and the V2 backpack.
Nice video!! v1 seems to have more function but v2 has a better view
Wow you are so right, the flappy things are killing me, but i just deal with it
How different is the new straps on v2? More comfortable? Many people complained about v1 strap being too ridge which digs into your body.
I forgot to mention this in the video, I can confirm the V2 straps are softer and more comfortable than the V1s.
Is there any concerns with having magnets near the laptop compartment?
The magnets are not super powerful so I don't think there will be a problem. I've placed my laptop and iPad in the compartment and so far, touch wood, everything still works.
Unless you’re still using a spinning hard disk magnets do nothing to computers.
I’d be more concerned about mag stripes on various cards in a wallet.
Amazing video thank you so much
Hey, Thank you for the comparison vedio really helped me to choose and I’m going for the v2 but May I ask if they fixed the shoulder straps issue , I’ve heard from other reviews it was very hard padding which was uncomfortable , Did they fix this issue in the v2 ?
Yup the V2 straps are much softer and more comfortable!
My V2 doesn't squeak but because then quality varies so much amongst bags it's hard to say if the one you get will squeak or not =(
The side flaps not opening as wide seems like it would make getting things in/out via side access, and packing the bag more challenging. Any thoughts?
Its actually not that big of an issue, you can apply some force and push them open wider, its just that they don't naturally fall open as wide.
I bought V1 when V2 was already out. I saw it too late. But at least, I got a used one for like half the price.
It’s one of those products where v2 is worse than v1. There are definitely better options around.
What are those options? In the market for a backpack like this, but still in the "research" phase. Thanks!
What options ??
@@edarioq I've just received my wandrd bagpack and it's a pretty good alternative. great design and functionalities. I had the peak design V1 but it makes so much noise when i walk and the zipper broke so I decided to find an alternative
Looking to buy one of these.
Great video btw!
I was wondering how this bag fits on the floor of an airplane. Is it stowable in front of your seat?
It is, but it depends on how much you pack into it. I have stowed this under the seat in front of me before on a plane but it's not the most comfortable.
Are these bags water resistant or waterproof and can be carried in the rain without the inside compartments getting wet? Probably not waterproof? Thanks.
They are water resistant. I took the bag on a water ride (Jurassic Park water ride at Disneyland) and I got completely soaked along with the bag but everything inside (my Sony A7III) remained completely dry.
Hey there,
loved the comparison.
1. The V2 seems to be ever so slightly larger, but it's so insignificant that you can treat it as the same size as the V1
2. The material feels basically exactly the same both internal and external. The straps are softer and more comfortable though.
3. It seems the same, a rough scratchy material.
Hope this helps.
thank you for a very short but detailed comparison!
Glad it was useful! I did forget to talk about the padding on the straps. The V2 straps are softer and more comfortable than the V1s.
18 minutes isn't exactly "very short"
@@aggaviriyo790 yea yea yeaaaa
@@wonked I just got my v1 backpack exchanged due to the zippers and while I like to have the updates one, the differences is not enough for me to spend on one. personally, I never felt that the v1 straps are uncomfortable. I'll be getting some slings and maybe a totepack instead.
Where did you get the elastic to clean up the straps?
Just the local dollar shop
I never had issues with my zippers V1 nor V2, glad they upgraded you to a new one =)
fantastic, thank you very much.
Would you know if the new 16" MacBook Pro's fit in the laptop compartment?
Yes I believe it will fit, I have watched other reviews that state the 16" fits.
How would you keep gear in the internal side pockets without having them falling now that they've removed the main zippers ?
I keep all the small/loose gear in the smaller zippered side pockets. The upper non-zipper pocket do have a magnetic closure but they do still have some gaps in the opening so I tend to place larger/items that don't tend to fall out in those.
I like the way they v1 looks more
V1 all the way. Love Peak, but I can't say I agree with many of the design decisions on v2.
Thanks for the info. Looking to get the V2 soon
