2 Worthington Ford Ads (KTTV - Los Angeles, CA) (late 1979 or early 1980)

  • Ok, these aren't exactly the best of Cal Worthington's ads, but any Cal is worth sharing.
NOTE: These came from an all-night movie marathon, of which, I have two of the movies (incomplete)...exclusively sponsored by Worthington Ford. The same two ads alternate over and over--as such, I've only included one instance of each.
These aired over LA's KTTV in either late 1979 or early 1980.

Even his longer ads represent the best of a legendary salesman.

Put up a laughing gif and some flowers, if you grew up watching Cal's commercials, and you can still hear the jingle say "Pussy Cow" instead of "Go See Cal".
Don't lie, you heard it too ....

I'm sure he became so popular with his commercials, that many people went to Worthington Ford just to meet him. It was an honest way to get people into the dealership. I would have gone to see Cal.

KTTV Channel 11. The LA area had it's assortment of independent stations even before UHF came in by the late 1960s. There was always something to watch on TV. Me I liked the old movies and the old TV shows. Back when LA was a good place to visit.

All his very best commercials were probably from between about 1971 and 1974; before anybody owned a VCR. I watched from Orange County CA.

Wow! Just wow! All those Pintos before they were recalled, and Rancheros! Oh those were the days when AC and FM radio were such luxuries (never had either until I got my own car) but the power windows were such a pain! Ah....the memories and such simple times....

Yup we've come a long way from then. I mean think about when CD players were optional back in the early 90s for cars, now it's standard.

New Cars don't have cd players in them it's all bluetooth wifi and usb

The Pinto thing had reached it notoriety by then after three young girls were killed in Indiana the year before in a Pinto fire. I was surprised they hung in there until the 1981 model year.

Reminds me of when I had a summer job in the early 90's delivering pizza and my car broke down and had to borrow my grandfathers 79 T-Bird. You don't make any profit with a 351 V-8, but you do make friends at the local gas station.

"The Women" (w/Norma Shearer) and the other one is a fairly early Katherine Hepburn movie (mid -30's) that I don't remember the name of offhand.

It's odd for me to watch these ad's because I remember them when I was a teenager and driving in cars like these. Looking at the prices $3995 and thinking wow that is so much money how can anyone afford a new car. We got cars 1960's cars that today would be considered classics. I remember a guy in high school he worked all year long and bought a 68 Camaro black with the white strips. We put a better cam in it and headers back then these cars were considered old junk. They were classics but not nice ones so not really anything special.
