Was a bit worried because some of the jokes especially in the first few episodes just wouldn’t land if you didn’t have an understand of isekai tropes, but glad you seems to be aware of them.
It's awesome how you pivoted into the topic of the psychological cornerstones of isekai in connection to how we try to reinvent ourselves in life. I also think Escaflowne is severely unknown by modern audiences so I appreciate it being mentioned. Isekai is just the Japanese word for a literature subgenre called "portal fantasy", which includes stories like Wizard of Oz, Narnia, and Alice in Wonderland, so you've probably already seen a variety of the tropes. I think Re:Zero is absolutely one of the BEST stories within fiction though. I won't spoil anything about the show but I'll just mention something that was not adapted clearly in the anime: Subaru experiences quite a bit of disorientation upon resetting and his behavior in the first couple episodes is quite literally "dying kinda fucks up your mental health". I see you're already further on Patreon, so you probably already picked up on it but it wasn't really explained just HOW MUCH his mind was jumbled up in the first episode
I am so excited for this! Subaru, in spite of and often because of his many flaws, is one of my favorite anime protagonists (and his VA does a great job with the character). I'm interested to hear what you think about him and the others as the story progresses!
Subaru having very noticeable and real flaws as both a character and person is EXACTLY why he's one of my all time favourite protagonists. He's just so unabashedly real, I pass by atleast a few Subarus outside on the street every month, though there's thousands more just hiding in their own rooms back home lol.
One fun thing about this series is the characters that have tics in their speech. For example, the silver haired woman you met here always extends the word “sugoku” basically adding “reeeaaaally” or “veeery” to everything she says.
I’ve no words, been waiting for this forever and to see that you even did enough research to watch the director’s cut… love you man 💜 Followed you for AoT Vinland HxH, and I can tell you this show is on that level and is an even better character study than the above, enjoy!!

Re:zero is very different from most Isekai and mainstreme anime in general. So here's a couple things that knowing should help your re:zero viewing. First to know is that re:zero is a very long story. Best estimates is that it will have over 200 episodes by the time it's fully adapted. Because of this Re:zero can be a slow burn in some aspects, many of it's most important mysteries for example you shouldn't expect to get answers to for a very long time. The next very important thing to know about re:zero is that it's source material is a light novel series that is still ongoing. A common issue with all light novel to anime adaptions is that there are just somethings in the written format that don't translate well to a visual anime adaption. This is true for all light novel sourced anime, but for re:zero's first season specifically they made this season not knowing how popular it would be or if it would be green lit for a second season. For this reason this season has some seriously important bits of cut content that served as major foreshadowing. This was done because they wanted to make this season self-contained in case it was a 1 season wonder with no sequel. Enjoy the show!
