Honestly it is. If it hadn't been for the note I probably wouldn't have given it a second thought. That said though, I appreciate and respect Gilles's high standards for himself.
The spring latch on that Raketenwerfer still functioned perfectly, 80 years later, even left to the elements. I thought your video looked great, despite the challenging environmental conditions. Thanks so much for sharing!
Wait a sec. If the Nebelwerfer werfs nebel, the Flammenwerfer werfs flammen and the Panzershreck shrecks panzer then what does this Panzerwerfer at 7:44 do. If it werfs panzer then that would truly be a terrifying weapon, for both adversaries and the crew of the werfed panzer.
Official German weapon systems are normally very completely descriptive of what precisely the system is/does. This paragraph is normally shortened into something manageable, like Flak or Pak. Shockingly, even German clerks get writer's cramp. The panzerwerfer werfs a minen, and the official designation probably has a lot of precise adjectives in it.
I had a toy rifle in the 1960's that was called a "Screaming Mee - Mee -e", (just looked it up to see if I was remembering correctly). It fired orange plastic bullets and had a grenade launcher under the barrel that fired a large projectile that made a screaming (whining?) sound when fired. Good times.
"Screaming Mimi" is also the name of the helicopter in the 1980s TV show "Riptide". The helicopter is now in firefighting service and still has the Mimi nose art under the cockpit window.
I posted to say that the Flugabwehrkanone doesn't kanone flugabwher, it's a kanone that abwehrs flugs. I'm not German, but several years of high school German are SCREAMING in my head right now. I'm sorry :P I know the meme isn't yours, but I can still hear Herr Hegel correcting us :P

I remember back in the 80s my grandfather was getting hassle off the jobcentre, after years of signing-on for a giro they sent him into the city, to a specialist employment manager. This company had famously got Dr Crippen a job in the hospitality sector. "What is your trade?" they asked him, "I'm a fully qualified Zeppelin pilot!", he replied.
JIm it is so good to hear someone present so much factual information off the cuff with such apparent ease, I know a lot of work goes into making an accurate historical record. Thanks from Liverpool
You would be a perfect choice for a role in a Quinten Tarantino movie. The multilingual command you possess is perfectly suited for a character in an Inglorious Bastards sequel or any European themed production that Mr. Tarantino might envisage.
In addition to the WW2 equipment & even the type of thinking at that time, I really admire your historical recounting。 Young Ian over in Forgotten Weapons flavours his videos much the same. Thank you so much.
Love the channel. In your opening disclaimer I think you meant "affected" rather then "effected." Not trying to be pedantic for sport, but you strike me as someone who cares about accuracy, so please accept the feedback as it is only intended to be constructive. PS: I probably made multiple typos in this comment...glass houses and all...
Wooh! The last heavy tank thing you showed with the 800kg rocket is wild how it vents its exhaust back up and outside of the barrel through numerous small holes. Seriously wild way to do things. Looks expensive to manufacture though. Would love to see this fire of anyone knows where to find such a video. 😊
Production quality is just fine! Totaly forgot about that message until the end of the video and I saw other comments about it. It's shipped, on to the next one!
Farley Mowat? Reminds me I need to read more of his stuff, I read The Boat That Wouldn't Float in like 8th grade (in the US), it was hilarious and great.
This _wine rack_ had various nicknames among the troops. Among other things, _“Stuka zu Fuß”_ (Stuka on foot) and _“Stuckateur”_ (Plasterer) based on craftsmen who carry out stucco work.
It "wirft" Raketen… "werfen" is a strong verb: Ich werfe, Du wirfst, er/sie/es wirft, wir werfen, ihr werft, sie werfen. Otherwise I am postively surprised by the good pronounciation of German words. Thank you for your videos! Kind regards
Another excellent video. I was unaware of the flaw you said needed to be corrected. I’ve often wondered if you read your lengthy & technically involved scripts from a prompter or a cue card. After watching this video, outdoors at a distance from the camera, it appears you’ve done it from memory. Am I correct?
A team at Peenemunde were also working on the small Typhoon surface to air rockets, they finished 600 that never went into action, though they did go on to inspire some U.S & Soviet designs.
Affected? Otherwise excellent as always, especially loved the intro 😂🤓👍👍 Love Farley Mowat too! Lost in the Barrens was one of my favourite books as a kid.
Farley Mowat , during his time at the front in Europe fighting Germans ALSO arranged a corridor with the local German High Command, to allow land and air drops/truck in foods to the starving people of Holland, whom the Germans were not feeding. Huge midwar humanitarian rescue mission that saved thousands of lives and thousands more from the effects of starvation.
Outstanding video with incredible detail, really impressed Video Request: General Worthington Park on CFB Borden,Ontario, has a WWII German flakpanzer IV "Wirbelwind" with quad 20mm AA guns in octagonal turret. My Dad worked on the Base and this was my favorite tank in the whole collection to visit
I often see those wooden frames painted as metal on SdKfz halftrack model kits. This is an AMAZING video. I do want to verify that anytimee we see these on a SdKfz THEY ARE WOODEN -- correct? So unfortunate there are no color photos of this machine in action.
are there any higher quality, or more modern recordings of the sound of these rockets? ...the recording you showed has that old timey sound to it.... it would be interesting to heat it more clearly.
The terrifying thing about Neubenwerfers was that some projectiles would impact just above supersonic--you heard the explosion before the shell tearing through the air. No warning, no time to get to cover, and a lot of them hit at once. Allied troops hated the things
3:19: The Soviet Katyusha rocket launcher, also known as Stalin's organ. (As in the musical instrument, for those of you who were thinking something else.) 😁
Unrelated words. A meemie (as in the "screaming meemie") has nothing to do with the modern word meme. Meemie refers to a fit of hysteria - or a person having such a fit. So "Screaming Meemie" would be referring to the sound of the rocket resembling someone (usually a women) in a fit of hysteria. There were also old songs from the early 1900s that used the word Meemie (I believe one was call my sweet meemie).
Quality is fine. No need to record it again.
Honestly it is. If it hadn't been for the note I probably wouldn't have given it a second thought. That said though, I appreciate and respect Gilles's high standards for himself.
I don't work in the AV field but as a layman it seemed completely fine
Agreed!
The occasional growls add character.

There's a weapon like that in Supreme Commander 2. The tanks are robotic, so the crew doesn't mind getting werfed.
