What I can remember, Ice Climber was bundled with my NES and I don't remember exactly which year it was but it was in the late 80s. I always gave up after a few levels. But it was a nice game :)

This may be my favorite of the games you have reviewed so far! 🤍❄️ Very “cool” game, hehe

When I was getting ready to start the channel for real it caught my eye and I'm real glad I picked it up.

I've been salty about the jump mechanics for decades here but you're right. Pre-Mario jumping game and all of that. My rage has been successfully soothened and replaced by the memories of playing this at the arcades and enjoying the scoreboards tallying. How 'bout that.

Once I got used to it I had a decent time. A lot of people dunk on Ice Climber, and it’s obvious why, but there is some fun to be had and it’s really charming.

I don't understand why Zelda 2's soundtrack is so brilliant while this game is just standard generic video game music. As far as I know Akito Nakatsuka only did the two games.. and then never did another game's music after that. It's to the point that it makes me suspicious. Like Koji Kondo actually ghost wrote Zelda 2's music or something.

I think Ice Climber actually has some pretty pleasing music, at least to my ears. It's more of that happy ragtime style though, and it's definitely more limited in part due to the cartridge limitations. Akito Nakatsuka has worked on a bunch of games though, at least according to wiki. Excitebike is one, but some other standouts are Brain Age, Punch-Out!! (as part of a team of composers), Devil World, Clu Clu Land, NES Open Golf and the Famicom versions, and a few more. Most recently it seems he's been in the "sound supervisor" role on games like Smash Bros 2014. He may no longer be with the company though if that's his last track.
There also seems to be a bit on controversy on whether or not he was actually involved in Pilotwings 64 in a Nintendo Life article from 2013.

@@HPRshredder I didn't know he did Excite Bike. That's a pretty good one. All his other soundtracks are just kind of...ok for me though. I guess that might be due to limitations on storage and the type of games he was given though. You're obviously not going to do some epic adventure theme for something like Excitebike or Ice Climbers.
But Zelda 2 shows me at least that they really needed to give that dude more epic adventure style games because he knocked Zelda 2 out of the park. It's one of the best soundtracks of any Zelda game up there with Link to the Past imo (though nothing beats that one for me).

@@ToneSherpa I definitely get your point. The other music isn't so "epic" sounding, and he really did crush Zelda II. I will say though, Brain Age has some excellent tracks. I love that style of Nintendo music.

Remember that icy racing track in the Mario Kart 64 game? No because it was actually a Mario 64 map, when's Mario coming out? Mario Kart 64 that is

Very simplistic game considering the system but still pretty playable, I just hated how they gave the seals fur in the US version and they look like some glitched out texture with just the seal's nose and eyes loading correctly hahah
