Looked up on the official Guinnes World Record website Ricky Gervais' record and it truly says that he holds the record for total gross of $1,790,206.50 and he himself said in this video it was around 18.5k spectators, resulting in an average ticket price of $96.77.
I'm a bit bewildered it is not the German comedian Mario Barth. He has the official Guinnes World Record already from 2008 with 67,733 spectators at a single show. Just considering an average ticket of around $30 (which is not that much) Mario Barth would have made a total gross of over $2,031,990 with those spectators. Way more than Ricky did.
And in June 2014 Mario Barth made a new one with 116,498 spectators within 24 hours.
It shows it is just about the record you are paying Guinnes for to look out and not what it all means. If Mario Barth would have paid Guinnes World Records to look out for the largest crowd and the most total gross, he would have it both.
And yes, you have to pay Guinnes World Records and specify exactly what record you are trying to get. They don't show up, just because you tell them "Hey, I'm gonna brake a world record."

Who’s Mario Barth again…? No disrespect meant but umm.. he’s Ricky Gervais. That book has records for the most asinine and ludicrous things so I think I could forgive them if they wanted to milk this particular one using his global fame. 😅

i am german and mario barth is a really really bad "comedian" and waaay worse then gervais.
but that said...the guiness world records are nearly all paid today and only a few meaningful ones can be found. most are totally ridiculous and you just pay them money for and they set them up for you, so just you can put your company in it etc... so all these "records" don´t mean anything anymore

With guinness world records, 1 you have to pay them and let them know the record you wanna break, but 2 is you can specify to a certain level of detail your record, as to distinguish yours from another much more impressive record.
