The $50 Tascam 238 Lives!

- I bought a non-functioning Tascam 238 with RC-88 remote for $50…after $150 in parts, including a brand new capstan servo board, and some elbow grease, it’s practically mint. Good deals can be found!
I had one in 1996, loved it. 8 tracks, two songs fit easily on each HQ cassette. I got it for about $320. I had a 16ch Tascam board that connected up with it via RCA plugs in 8-ch RCA snakes, worked great. Insert channels were terrific, I had several outboard hardware effects that worked well and connected easily to the sends. A really good product before Frontier when Tascam's stuff went to shit. The remote with its ridiculous length was FANTASTIC!
I knew this guy from a forum like 10 years ago. Kindest most patient generous man ive ever met online. No lie. Youd have to be for someone to look you up 10 years later just to say this.

'Good deals can be found'...but not in the UK, sadly. They want silly prices for these things. £600-1500 for a 30 year old cassette machine! I don't thinks so. Get an ADAT for 50 squid.

That’s a good combo IMO, or an M-300 series.

I do, sparingly. If I had more time I’d do more but time is in extremely short supply.

I’m in the Pacific Northwest…keep in mind shipping each way would likely be around $150, and of course involve risk, the degree of which would depend on how well you packed it. If that alone doesn’t dissuade you, tell me what’s going on with your 238?
@@SweetbeatsTechStop oh, ok, I see. I have the 238 in Provo Utah, and will pick it up, I will check it and let you know. I bought it some time ago, knowing it had some issue, but worked in general. It's great to know you are around. Good skills..! I love recording, and plan to make space here to organize a setting that can include the 520, and 238 , Cheers
Hi there, as said went to Utah to pick some equipment that included my 238. Ok here is what shows up, .. I plug it, turn it on and immediately the engine that is more to the top of the unit, and is perpendicular to the front, makes a sound similar to a sirene..it's rolling inside, no doubt about it...thank you.. regards Joe
