- Keyboardist and composer Alan Hawkshaw is one of the UK's most legendary session musicians, and is responsible some of the most sought-after library LPs on the KPM label. We were lucky enough to sit down with Hawkshaw recently to discuss his incredible career in music, spanning his earliest groups, the KPM period, his involvement in the breakdance classic "The Champ" by The Mohawks, the transition to the disco era, and the embracing of his music by modern DJs and producers.
Strut's collection of essential library music on the KPM label, Music For Dancefloors, is available now.

RIP Alan Hawkshaw. Great tunes we all knew and loved.
R.i.p Alan Hawkshaw. Your musical legacy shall live on forever.
I saw the KPM ALL-Stars playing their funky library music live on stage at Islington Town Hall in 2012 which starred Keith Mansfield, Alan Hawkshaw, John Cameron, James Clarke, Duncan Lamont and Brian Bennett. I'm privileged to have seen these great musicians live on stage, as respectfully, none of them are getting any younger.
I was incredibly lucky and got to know Alan on a personal level. He sparked my interest in music and is one of the most incredible people I've ever met. Rest in Peace, you and your music shall always stay with us.
RIP, Alan. Thanks for all amazing tunes. Part of the soundtrack of my life!
RIP Alan. A total legend.
OMG, this guy is a legend.......... The Champ, Grange Hill, the stuff with Brian Bennett, unbelievable!
What a cool, talented guy
Farewell, Alan Hawkshaw who has gone upstairs and looks forward to meet a lot of old pals in the KPM Lounge.
God bless you Alan thanks for your music.
Great interview. "No big deal" he says about one of the most iconic compositions in history! 9:34
R.I.P. Alan Hawkshaw.
Absolute genius.God bless him.
For me, the greatest talent to ever write modern classics for the world, hugely important to our music history, quite simply a legend.
LEGEND
A master of music !!!! What a fabulous man. Adore all of his music
i like how when he lists examples he always says "beat me til im blue, senior thump...". great interview!
There's a gift for Alan Hawkshaw, Keith Mansfield, Johnny Scott, etc. to write stuff so simple, but so catchy it gets under your skin. Thank you gents. 8)
Alan is amazing. I have his music on repeat most days!
Fraser Hawkshaw
You betcha! :D
I agree my friend!! He is so prolific and explore lots of different inspiring music!!! BRL7 Music Machine is a masterpiece!! And previous works too!! Like the cool funky FUEL INJECTION!! He is one of the bests!!
R I P Mr Hawkshaw.
I can't believe Alan played on Champ by the Mohawks
Love "Chicken Man", of course, as the theme to Grange Hill. It sounds like what it is, a chicken man. Extraordinary, really. And he wrote the Countdown clock music while he was on the loo!! You can kind of hear that in the melody!! 😂 Wonderful.
Fascinating how this great music evolved, a shame it's still quite unknown to most people.
Please come to Ireland soon Mr Hawkshaw
I just love stories like Hawk's so informative and so enlightening. Great music.
Legend, opened my mind to different music.

Proper
awesome. surprised there aren't more docs on this genius. the music mix is a little loud though. let the maestro speak please.
I wonder if he knew Keith Emerson.
I agree, listen for one,s loose the background music.
Could this be the same Alan Hawkshaw who, in the 1960s, bought a piano with the money that he and his wife had saved as the deposit on a house ?
Would be a better interview without the background music. Can barely understand what he's saying.
I know what you mean, but having background music isn't the real issue with it in my opinion. There actually appears to be no voice processing on the video - Alan needs/deserves some EQ and a lot of compression to bring his tones up comfortably over the track (..as he himself would know, being a master of audio!)
I thought the fact each track he is talking about at that particular point appears in the background was a nice touch - but if the uploader has a way to remix the audio track here it would be very much advised!
Wow, you look up your mother's date of birth and discover a musician you'd never heard of! :o)
Happy birthday to your mother! ............. er, whenever that is............
