You have a gold mine with you, take good care of him and he will bring you many hours of good smiling while riding. The w126 is a awesome machine. Congrats
Welcome to Mercedes world, that is , OLD SCHOOL Mercedes. The W126 is on the tail end of that philosophy of cars being the ultimate in design and workmanship, literally making it the car of a lifetime. Heck , you just bought a car that's 30 years old and if you treat it well it will go another 30 years !!
The W140 was their last 'best or nothing' hoorah before the accountants were given more say than the engineers. They went all out and spent $1bn back in the late 80s/early 90s on engineering them making it the most expensive car ever developed. The W220 that followed in 2000 wasn't quite up to the previously set standards!
If you get a good one, you don't need to do too much. Make sure the vacuum controlled things work well, or they'll be a pain to sort out, same thing with the AC system. If you're willing to work on it, it's cheap. Easy to work on and there's a lot of knowledge on these old Mercedes. Parts are cheap and easy to find too.

It's one of the best engineered cars of all time, it'll last you a lifetime if you are willing to do some work on it occasionally.
