I am revisiting all of my KJ right now and enjoying the hell out of it. Geordie, you will be missed. You created your own sound and influenced countless guitarists.
this is an underrated album. generally kj is underrated. i visited the studio where they recorded hosannas from the basements of hell in prague to show respect.
Man, this masterpiece of an album has eluded me for 34 years. I am in total awe of this music. I remember watching the Sanity video back then and thinking it was good. I remember seeing the album in a shop back then, but I did not try listening to it. Big mistake.
Exactly. If this would have been released by "just another 80's band" without the history of KJ, it would have been hugely popular. A flat-out epic album similar in strength to the Chameleon's first 2 and Echo's Heaven Up Here.
Agreed! Google the 2016 30th anniversary review of the album by Oliver Sheppard... Thirty Years Ago: Killing Joke’s “Brighter Than a Thousand Suns” Exploded Onto the Scene. A seriously in depth review of the whole scene.
@@fractaljack Thank you so much for mentioning The Chameleons! Never heared of them but gave a listen and was instantly hooked. "What does anything mean? basically" is really insanely good. It's strange that they never made it big, they seem to be even more underrated than Killing Joke. For anyone reading this: If you like BTATS you should really give a listen!
@@thetension4882 You're welcome! So glad I could turn someone on to them in 2019. Ironically, I've been listening to "Script" in my car for the past week...not a clinker in the whole album and still sounds fresh! Back in the day, we always kept those bands on a tight leash and didn't really want them to be well-known. Our fear was they would " sell out" and go to a major label. Okay, I have 2 more for you. The Comsat Angels - Waiting For A Miracle LP and pretty much everything by The Sound but especially "Jeopardy" and "From the Lion's Mouth". The interesting thing about the Chameleons and the Sound was they only had a lead vocalist with no backing vocals; similar to The Cure. The singers were so powerful they didn't need anyone else. Adrian Borland was one of the finest singer/songwriters of that generation and there is an interconnected thread to Ian Curtis and JD that you can discover.
I only discovered this album very recently whilst searching around for 80's music I missed the first time round. I've been listening to it for the past two years solid now. I can't believe I missed it the first time. It is definitely in my all time top ten now, a classic.
The whole "Brighter Than a Thousand Suns" album is a solemnly and sublime piece of music. However my absolute favorite is Chessboards, closely followed by Love of the Masses.
The best song ever!!! So much quality in everything!!! Lirycs, sound and composition; just for the immense minorities!!! A lot of beers from Uruguay!! Until my brain explode for songs like this!!!
Beautiful....I still feel the shiver....running down my spine.....after all the decades of listening to them....being essential for my musical socialisation. Love U...
- yes indeed....I have the full KJ catalog and I love the period of "Brighter Than a Thousand Suns" & "Outside the Gate"...every cd of KJ is awesome in its own way...but I keep coming back to this one my favorite along with "Pandemonium" & "Democracy"
"Critics" can say what they want, I also love this era of Killing Joke, even "outside the gate" is great. They're known for their monotonous, hammering sound but flavouring it with a good pop hookline is what what made KJ always interesting & different to me.
Around, around, young men and women move Through sun and steel our lives transforming To forge a link flow backwards to our source And forfeit self amongst the masses Why do we love them? Love of the masses They fight and play in timeless rivalry The people clamour for a loser WIth joy and sorrow mixed we realize That peace shall come by sacrifice (EDIT: peace!) Why do we love them? Love of the masses As proud as heroes walking hand in hand The common destiny we're sharing And all affected without prejudice Shall forfeit self amongst the masses Why do we love them? Love of the masses
I wish they had not remixed "Rubicon" on newer issues of the album. For some reason, the remix fades out the song near the ending, instead of climaxing with the loud, echoing BOOM heard at the end of the original issue. I feel the original ending is far more powerful than a slow fade-out.
Happy Birthday, Paul Raven (King!) My fave baseline of his! It's sooooo fun to play on bass (not tuba?) Met the Big 4 (backstage, twice! We_d with Jazz and the second time, Youth. Autographed plectrum by Mr. Geordie! And (I payed the guy who bought it, $50 cash!) a signed (afterwards) Big (Awesomeness) Paul drumstick! Western Canada LOVES Killing Joke!!!! PS Raven was a fan of 70's (Uli Roth) Scorpions! Awesome!!!
I clicked on them ny curiosity and. . . . .how the hell did I not listen to them in their time? I guess it's right when they said, "all good things will come to you in their time". . . . It's time.
We been in a KJ gig on Argentina, I got a pictures with Jaz Coleman,so i could die in hell, so great the night, unforgettable moments, it will be with me until death do as part and after that!!!
unbelievable, still reviews from the web are slashing this album. It's a fricking brilliant album, love at first listen! and I am not even a longtime KJ fan! Maybe they did not listen to the original mix (which was refused by the record label back then)
@@backslash68 Yeah, bloody critics are all posers and idiots! Pretentious fools who know less than they think. They particularly love to slag off unconventional bands like KJ.
Aye, geordiemojo, a bit like Morrissey rewriting Yukio Mishima's suicide note. Oh, wait, he didn't write one. Well, that was a shame. You're right, one can't improve on this.
This album disappointed me. Not the dark anthemic sound of previous tunes. They seemed to play more safe and measured. kind of like Simple Minds (whom I like, but that's their sound). Killing Joke just seemed to take a slight detour, that's all. Still love them!
Geordie's guitar tone is otherworldly... takes my mind to places
He was one of a kind. RIP Geordie.
This musical piece and " Sanity " are beautiful beyond words. I'm 54 and these songs tear at my heart still. Thank you KJ.
idd super album
Been listening to BTATS for decades love it ❤
To think they hated this album after releasing it. I love this album. So many great songs from top to bottom.
Is anyone going to talk about that bassline? 😎
Killer Bass that's so beefy love it!!
Its a basseline i guess
WOW, THAT BASSLINE.......THERE YOU GO, ALL HAIL RAVEN.
It is amazing and believe has been stolen many times since.
Need your tonight - INXS ?
GOD bless Raven, love this bass line
oh that bass...
My Favorite Killing Joke Album.
Igual para mi, me gusta mas este estilo de KJ
The whole album is driven by that bassline, it weaves itself through every song.
Rip Geordie . Say hello to Paul Raven for us ...😢
Indeed. Georgie was a unique player. I am afraid KJ may be done now. RIP Geordie. Raven is indeed waiting.

My favorite album! My friend turned me on to killing joke back in 1986 & I was hooked hand's down! I was 19 when I bought this on cassette!
Totally addicted to listening to their music
Im 59 and started my killingjoke journey in 1982 no regrets apart from the losses of the band listening to BTASS it, s still brilliant ❤
ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONG I HAVE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE !💜🖤
idd ken kj van 78 deze is mooi!
Para mí también, una de las músicas más lindas de mi vida

Man that Bass is just killer 🤘🤘🤘🤘🎸🎸🎸 listen to the licks WOW 😳🎸👌👌👌👌 so many different changes on the Bass playing
My favorite Killing Joke CD. Filled with big sweeping songs like thos one. Classic CD that is not appreciated enough by Killing Joke fans.

My third-favorite KJ album, after the two self-titled albums. I've had it in heavy rotation for over 25 years, and it never gets old.
I wish they had not remixed "Rubicon" on newer issues of the album. For some reason, the remix fades out the song near the ending, instead of climaxing with the loud, echoing BOOM heard at the end of the original issue. I feel the original ending is far more powerful than a slow fade-out.
the worst part of a KJ song is when it ends :(((
The Chris Kimsey mix is longer at least
If you truly listen. It never ends.
gid name
The best piece of music I've ever heard.
for me one off the best song ever like the voice guitar

What a drama. Jaz + Geordie + Big Paul and Raven were a fantastic band.
Still hear Morrisey, but the tunes sneek into your mind like a Geordie Ninja, Killing Joke can do no wrong masters of musical mind controll.
Sooooo True!
Som perfeito ! , salve kilking joke 💀🤟🏼🥃
And the critics slash this..fools.
Its a great album, they should play several tracks off it live cos its fkin brilliant
Critics are failed artists.

¡Ha! ¡Ha! That is a 'Killing Joke' if I ever heard one. 😉😁
Big Paul!!!
First view and first comment! Thanks for the upload
Not sure how much i like this album, I keep hearing Morrsisey in Jaz's voice.
I'll 53rd that, brilliant track
oh Lord!!!
♡
Ran into this by mistake. Reminds me of Depeche Mode. And I like anything that reminds me of Depeche Mode.
I' m agree. And reminds me David Bowie, too. 80,s David Bowie.
Jesse Sample Reminds of The Cure also... bass line is so Simon Gallup and Jaz Coleman even sounds like Robert Smith here a little bit.
Duran Duran, anyone?
TheAnalPunisher Yes, that too... early 80's DD to be exact :)
Oh please. Killing Joke is on a much higher level than those you compare.
The Coleman!
Our lives trans-forming
RIP KGW.
The Raven King kicks out the bass on this RIP
mucho temaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
¡Absolutamente!

I am not G. I am gidget goes to hell. Phoenix is my son. I adore KJ. I love Bauhaus. I love Rachmaninoff. Where are you that know me?
Love the more gloomy deathrock sound on this album.
Star Trek....................
like their first 2. this is kinda boring to me. but love to all

Yes now that you put it like that I think I feel you. Strange but still poignant
