You have to admire a man who goes to Spain for a full English and returns home for tapas, you really do.

Tapas in this country never works we treat it as a proper sit down meal nothing like Spain when sipping on a nice Albariño or Rioja at the bar our nearest equivalent is a bag of crisps, nuts or scratchings washed down with a pint of Carling 😂

    @Mach_One_Photos ปีที่แล้ว +7

tapas was the Spanish equivalent of a bowl of peanuts on the bar to snack on when you have a drink. some were free and some you paid for depending how many toothpicks you had when you finished your drink. the tapas style you had in Benidorm was pincho or pintxo an individual small bar snack from the Basque country. what you had today was shared plate style tapas popular around the Barcelona bars and cafes. where you sit with friends and share plates of food and a drink.

Lol myself 37 and my wife 34 are 100% Phil and Janice 🤣 except we're from Kent not Wolverhampton. I've not a huge fan of fish n chips etc but like watching you devour them... lol
I believe the first tapas was a peice of bread put over a glass of wine to stop flies which they ended up eating/dunking etc and it evolved but there's tapas and then there's tapas

English tapas is ham sandwiches, sausage rolls, cheese and pineapple on sticks, crisps and tepid orange cordial. The family picnic on a day trip. Those were the days.

Google says The word tapa means 'lid' and comes from the verb tapear, meaning 'to cover'. Many people say that the custom of tapas came about when bar keepers began covering their customers' drinks with a slice of bread, ham or cheese to stop flies and dust from entering.

Tapas actually refers to style of serving food, rather than specific dishes. However, this doesn’t mean that there aren’t classic dishes that you’ll find in any decent tapas bar (we’ll have more on that in a minute).
First, a “tapa” is simply a small portion of food. Anything can be served tapas style! When you go for tapas, you’ll end up ordering lots of small plates and sharing. This way, you can try a selection of different dishes all at once.
The most common story behind the origin of tapas is that they started out as small slices of meat or bread served in bars that patrons could use to cover their drinks to keep flies out. “Tapas” is the Spanish verb for “to cover”. Bit by bit, the small bar snack started becoming just as essential as the drinks. They also started becoming more elaborate.
Today’s tapas are much more sophisticated. You’ll find tapas ranging from small dishes of olives to elaborate culinary creations. There are even tapas contests to create the very best ones!

Hi Lee. Gone off tapas recently as in our local restaurant, The Tapas Tree at Shipley, it is getting a bit over priced for what it is. As for the Castrol, I assume it was Olive Oil? You should have had Balsamic Vinegar in there as well. Makes a world of difference.

Hey Lee! Happy New Year and big hello to Angie 👋 nice to see you both together again. Blimey that intro was almost 5 minutes long . Gotta be a record. Mmmm Tapas! Like you say it’s just small dishes of what you would call buffet food. Potatas Bravas is the norm to get with any tapas meal. Nice looking chicken and I’m a bit meh on the chorizo dish. Considering you said it was nice. Can see both you and Angie weren’t blown away by them either. Watching you eat those burgers yesterday in Holmfirth - your face was a different picture. Also very pricey for some bread and the Castrol GTX - 3 main dishes and your drinks plus service charge on top. Good to hear Nick is slowly improving with time. Obviously it’s not quite there yet but it’s good news he’s had a good Christmas too
    Take care 😘👍🏻

5/10 at the most for me Lee. Looked a bit naff for the money & not typical authentic tapas for me at all. I cook Spanish food all the time and for me the Patatas bravas looked like roast spuds with a dip, agree with you fully on the bread oil/balsamic, the chicken looked more like a Chineses dish with sesame seeds & the chorizo dish just looked very, very lame. And don’t even get me started on the 10% *discrectionory* service charge. How on earth can they call it discretionary if it’s automatically been added to the bill?!?!? 😤
Also Lee, can I thank you so, so much for the Benidorm videos because it really changed my mind about the place. So much so I’ve convinced the wife too and we should be booking a holiday there shortly. Looked great, would definitely avoid the strip/square area at my age but there’s something there for everyone as I now see it. So … thanks! 😊👍

Lee lived in Spain for 7 years. Regions in Sp[ain have there own tapas and tapas means small plate. My favourites are Russian Salad ( ensalada rusa ) brava and crab and prawn mix. So to cap it Spanish love to eat small plates of food when drinking and usually free

The best Tapas is find a small bar, right outside a bullring, in a town where the English tourists don't go. Somewhere like Huelva would be ideal & they are also very good in San Sebastian where they are called Pintxos. In fact San Sebastian has a whole section of the city full of Pintxo bars and really is a bucket list place to visit, fabulous city.

I found this vlog very amusing Lee & Ange - or should that be Phil & Janice! I am sat at my local bar, eating tapas.
That looked nearer real tapas than that you had in Benidorm. Tapas are only, really, small tasters of Spanish dishes.
Next time you're in Tenerife, get the Craicmaster to bring you over to La Palma, proper Canaries, not Las Americas!
I like Anchovies and gambas al ajillo (Prawns in garlic) as seafood is popular here on the coast, though today I saw two little girls enjoying fresh strawberries & cream in the sun in January! Who needs Wimbledon?

Looked ok...chorizo & lentejas (lentils) and the patatas bravas looked very wet at the bottom of the bowl. My fave tapas are ensaladilla rusa, boquerones en vinagre, huevos rotos, serranitos, gambas pil pil, croquetas, tortilla. All washed down with a cold one of course! You should come here to Gibraltar - you can get fish & chips, full english breakfast and tapas!

Tapas is lovely. Light healthy small dishes, you can share a few or just have one for yourself. With a refreshment be it a beer, a sherry, or glass of wine. It’s local scran. I can only say the most traditional I had was in Seville. Was in a bar and they offered for free tasters….snack food, free and filling with a drink. But such good quality. As for a Tapas Meal. More toward what you had. But is for sharing.

Hi Lee great blog with you and the Angel. The tapas are more what Phil and Janice would expect not being on bread. But the Benidorm tapas on bread was more authentic. It has evolved like you said. I would had ordered the Huevos Rotos then you would have sausage , egg and chips lol. Phil and Janice said the tapas were big and larger tapas are called raciones . We had an all you can eat tapas restaurant on the Wirral, sadly not here now. Good fun video mate.

'Tapas' is a small portion of something tasty , nothing more, nothing less, even Paella is traditionally a peasants dish ......was good to see Spanish Callasparra Rice in the video , it's a proper Paella rice , i've been to Calasparra , it's about an hour south of Alicante airport......otherwise known as Benidorm Airport haha.

I think folk are being a bit snobbish about Tapas. It is simply a Spanish cuisine that is now done elsewhere. A lot of the dishes are fairly simple so are generally authentic and it is European so all ingredients are readily available. Compared to Thai, Indian, Vietnamese Mexican etc which are Anglified/Western versions of the original cuisines. On another note, I think your intros are great; as you know the best youtubers are the authentic ones who are likable, funny, honest, innovative and decent (as well as having decent editing and video skills) and you have all of those in spades and that is why your channel is doing well. The public has a massive choice now in channels so finding a good channel that is watchable is not easy. I live abroad now so I really enjoy the content and the humour. keep up the good work and of you are ever n Thailand let me know.

Lets explain. Tapas is basicly a small snack. An english tapa could be different from a spanish tapa mainly because Brits may prefer different things to a Spaniard. The real thing here is the size of the plate. Tapas is a small snack. Half a ration is half a full meal and a ration is a full size meal. What you received was a half ration. The food contents would be the same but in different amounts.

Having said that, if you Google “tapas”, it’s usually small enough that you don’t need a knife and fork, just a cocktail stick or even fingers. When I was in Almeria in Spain some years ago, tapas was usually served as a snack to accompany drinks.

I remember about 30 years ago a little place along Deansgate in Manchester. I think it was called simply 'The Tapas Bar' - you went in and got dozens of these little tiny silver bowls, all full of genuine authentic Tapas. The bowls were small, but they just kept coming and coming, so you were always full up. It was absolutely PACKED whenever you went there. Sadly like all good things, it must have gone bust, or just moved Towns.

Tapas literally means small plate and can be anything from bread and cold meats right through to squid, prawns etc. The story about the bread on the wine is true I think
People would drink the wine and then eat the bread afterwards.

In majority of the restaurants, service charge does not go to the servers at all; it goes to the restaurant. It's just another way for restaurants to earn money (or have you pay for the server's hourly wage). If you do want to tip, give your money directly to the server.
On another note, just 1 min walk from bar iberico is Ucanteen which is the best chinese food in Nottingham in my opinion

Looked OK but those prices ! Wow ! Full portion prices for a mini tapas size light bite! That'll hurt the wallet.
I'd deduct a point for the 99% oil to 1% balsamic ratio. Deduct another for the scandalous prices and a third for slapping on a service charge.
    7/10 max.

So MacMaster, you finally come face to face with your nemesis.........Patatas Bravas!

Yeh, it is one theory of the 'tapa' which is a tap/top for a glass of wine/beer to stop flies, but it is VERY much debated as the origin of it. What you had in Benidorm wasn't traditional tapas, it was pinchos/pinxos.
OMG the price of them!!!! WOW!!!! In Lanzarote, my local tapas place has a choice of about 25 tapas for €2.75 each or 5 for €12.50....... those price are CRAZY mad high!!!! BUT, they are right to say they are served when cooked, that's expected that they will come out when ready. Tapas shouldn't cost as much as that, you're looking at £3/4 per small portion.
When you come back to Lanzarote, I have to take you for tapas, proper, well priced, cooked in house daily tapas 😊
£5 for patatas bravas...... disgusting 🫤 Chorizo is not leftover sausage, especially not at that price, and all those portions are way too big, HOWEVER, I totally agree with you on the green rubbish, get it off, I HATE coriander and green rubbish on my food, don't want it, it wasn't on the menu, get lost!!!!
So yeh, it IS tapas food, but too big of a portion size and way too expensive. I can sen you a video link to a video explaining the whole idea of tapas if you want as it isn't a type of food really, it's an event with friends and family to take part in while drinking, just to make it more confusing lol.
Wow, even if the drinks were €6.25 in my local, a clay wheel with 5 tapas selections out of 25 ish would still only total €18.75, and that's in euros!!!! WOW!!! Yeh, I don't rate that for traditional tapas, sorry 🫤 It looked good apart from the green rubbish, way overpriced, to big of a portion, and a service charge to top it off..... 4.7/10

I would have had some of that ham off the bone. That looked good and would be nice with the bread and some cheese. I think you are suppposed to have tapas with wine at 10 pm or something. Enjoyed the video

That looked a lot more like the traditional tapas I had in Madrid once, as opposed to your any-shite-on-some-bread shop last week. The problem is Spain is not a small country and regional differences mean nobody can really claim 'this is the tapas of all tapases'. Oh, and you can stuff your service charge - the drinks were twice the price they should be for a kick-off!

Hello crew….. 17:46 - see those two small white plates? (yes you do) pour some balsamic vinegar into the centre, circle the dark puddle with olive oil and then grind on some coarse sea salt. The two liquids won’t mix so you can dip as much of each as you like but use plain fresh bread otherwise you’ll be “oiled out”... Maybe too you’ll look dead cosmopolitan doing this display and a great way to impress the birds with your culinary knowledge (well, we can but try….) A few white seedless grapes in a small bowl wouldn't be amiss either... 20:38 - oh my lawdy.. I can smell the garlic from here and I’m 150 miles away - TIP: stick to zoom meetings for the next few days if you’re going anywhere near that alioli :-) 24:20 - tapas is a hospitality accompaniment with a good friend and a few drinks; just as peanuts are at the Dog and Duck P.H. - you wouldn’t go into your local pub and order a main meal of deep fried cheese and onion crisps and a bag of KP nuts sautéed in ketchup with a wedge of pork scratchings (….. now, there’s an idea…) Tapas is a social thing not a meal…. Next time try a decent Spanish restaurant or pop back to Spoons… yay! In a Birmingham pig voice (for the older viewers) “Yer making’ me 'ungry Hartley” Keep up the great videos!
