  • Once arrived in Rosso a crowd of about 15 people assaulted us. There is no law in Rosso. The local mafia is rouling. They starte with heavy money request, about 200 euro each to cross the border. if you deny or complain they start screaming. If you ask the few police officers's help there they just say it's not their business, and that people have to work. Being part of a Mafia is not a job.
when you finish negotiate something there is always something missing.... 40 euro for a stamp, 30 euro to pay the police, 40 euro tip, the ticket of the ferry, the douane, the police officer of the douane... everyone in Rosso has to be payed.
When the negotiation become hard the all sourround you. They get closer and screaming "you are racist" "your grandfather come to Africa to steal our richness". They are the racists and criminals.
After 2 hours of negotiations we ended up spending 95 euros each all together. Exiting Mauritania through every other not corrupted border costs ZERO. This means we gave 95 euro each to the local mafia and corrupted police.
They also force you to buy an insurance for the motorbike for Senegal. initial price 70 euro each. final price 20 euro. If you don't buy it you won't pass.
There are people crossing the border lots of times a day without any control.
I really hope this stolen video can help moving Mauritania's government to do something about this.
I couldn't believe this was happening for real.

I've crossed the border northwards (March 2023).If you are starting at St.Louis in Senegal get to the bus station before 7am - shared taxi to the border takes about 2 hours and costs 4000CFA.Upon arriving at the crossing the police take your passport - you then have to catch a motorbike driver 500CFA who will drive you to the police station where you have to wait half an hour for the police guy to arrival with your passport. In the police station you have to wait in line for another 20 minutes for a sour-faced policewomen (miserable even by Senegalese standards) to process your exit stamp. You then walk to the ferry passing another police checkpoint to the ferry. Obviously going on the vehicle ferry is out of the question for reasons unknown so you will have to turn right and wait another 30 minutes for one of the small boats to ferry you across when they are full up (500FCA).Upon arrival at Rosso you are shown the immigration office where they will process your visa for 55 Euros. It was all done quite easily - all done in 20 minutes as there were not too many people there. After that you follow the road until you see a load of shared cars for the 2 hour drive to Nouakchott. Good luck !

It depends on how good you are in off-road, on your bike, and if the Diama's track is flooded... But I would say yes

@@justnobody1975 so all I need is 500CFA for the ferry from Rosso and then 60 Euros for the tourist visa and that's it - right? I was hoping to buy a visa in advance in Dakar but they said go to the border hence I'll have to put up with the nonsense on arrival.

@@justnobody1975 Nonsense - a lot of sub-Saharan Africa is fucking dire and that's just the ugly cities - Lagos, Naimey, Accra, Lome, Nairobi, Ouagadougu, Banjul, Nouakchott, Yamasoukkro, Kampala, Addis Ababa, Dodoma ! It's also (nowadays) crazily expensive - my recent trip to Senegal was more expensive than Spain and there is the teeny weeny issue in that there is for the most part fuck all to see in many of these places ! To date the only places I rate would be Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Oh and the film Blood diamonds was dreadful come to think of it !
