    Great Vid once again, I have been watching you for a while now... I live near the peak district and have done a few solo overnighters... In the Goyt valley there is a large forest and one night I was woken by something really weird, strange sounds.. I was deep in the forest pitched up against a flat fallen tree.. in the morning found some big footprints.. but my phone battery had discharged.. scared the hell out of me not been back since. Great if you did a vid over this way and did a bit of an exploration. I'm just about to start posting some vids on... thanks for all your tips ive used a few of em already... Hey there Damian, another good video, nice work.
    That's a well dialed in minimal setup you've got there.
    I have the Alpkit Rig 7 tarp and the Hunka XL.
    I used to always just use a foam sleep mat, but I turn 40 this year and need a little extra comfort.
    So now I use a Robens primacore 6.0 sleep mat that fits nicely in my bivi bag - it's similar to a neoair but half the cost.
    It's a nice warm, thick (6cm) insulated sleep mat and really nice quality. But it's quite narrow at the legs, and bright red, so not very stealthy if it's not inside the bivi.
    It packs down to about the size of a 1liter bottle and weighs in around 500g.
    I like it 'coz I'm a side sleeper and need the 6cm thickness to keep my shoulders and hips off the ground.
    I also made myself a 'pump sack' out of a 20mm open grommet; the lid and neck of a coke bottle and a heavy duty bin liner
    I found the instructions here on youtube, and it works great.
    It stops the inside of the sleep mat getting damp and moldy from the moisture in my breath (and saves a lot of huffing and puffing).
    Anyho, atb from sunny Derbyshire.

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Scott's outdoor adventures Go for the army bivy its more breathable than the Hunka material and its like a small tent the amount of gear you can stuff in. How far to we take minimalism?.. the Hunka XL is about 500g and the army bivy is about double that but just under a kilo and more robust IMHO, there isn't much difference in the size like you said. I have the small Hunka for really minimal camping or in ok weather and use the army bivy for everything else, ATB, Damian

    Cracking video as ever mate, beautiful scenery, just out of interest, does the trail cam and sound recording device take up much room in your pack and does it make a difference overall to the lightweight approach to your overnighters? Like the tarp ridgeline - need to brush up on my knots as I'm wasting far too much paracord being a lazy get and not reusing, and not learning to tie them properly. All the best mate, and thanks for posting. Nick

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Nicholas Fenlon Hi Nick, carrying extra recording gear doesn't take much more room or weight, I can get it all into a slightly larger camera bag which is on top of the 35L back pack I have. Bulk is the main problem for me going minimal because my pack is only 35L so its a bit of a juggling act with what items to take, do I really need those items and can I put up with less comfort for one night. Once you get into a minimal way of thinking its surprising how little gear you need. Paracord could be considered bulky and for my ridgeline I use the cordage from an old retractable dog lead which broke and left me with 8 meters of strong cordage great for a small tarp ridge line. Get to know some knots, in Google type in tarp knots, there are a few you really only have to learn and are indespensible. Thanks for your comments, atb, Damian.

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +JACKA Got the Hero4 Silver which has the lcd screen on the back and unless you intend to shoot in 4K the silver is better than the black which doesnt have the lcd screen. The Hero3 is good and can be bought at a bargain now. They will record HD video at 1080p but depending on which model of hero3 you might not be able to shoot at high framerates so if its action slow motion shots a hero3 black would be the best option. The hero4 gopros have nightlapse and can record the stars and milkyway truely awesome cameras but which ever one you buy they are all record stunning HD footage

    How do m8t great video , there isn't one yet that a haven't had a chuckle at for some reason or other . Just a quick question have you had any bother with the water after warming up boil in the bag meals then using the water for a brew .? Reason I asked is I've been told you shouldn't drink it because of something to do with the inks and glues on the outside of the packaging ... No one can really give me a definitive answer on the subject . Anyway ATB

      +crazyandy2008 Thank you. I never thought about the water being contaminated but you are probably right its definitely a risk maybe not short term drinking the water occasionaly but over time could be bad. Will look into it, cheers, Damian.

      +Fell Wanderer i asked same question about this on the wildcamping uk on facebook. its a bit hit and miss . guys in the forces say its fine due to the foil bags but some people are on the fence with the store baught due to the inks and glues in the packaging. but personally you can't even eat bacon now acording to some scientists.

      +Fell Wanderer also was put onto these For the very reason you mention Andrew, I mix boil in the bag meals with rice (or whatever combination you want) into these bags. Works a treat for me and the water is safe to drink without any concern

    Mr Fell wanderer, I'd really love to start youtubing this summer like you. Would you mind sharing what kit you use for recording? your sound is very clear, I doubt you use the zoom mic everywhere though? I see you use the GoPro, but which one and how do you keep the power going for long treks? The batteries (even the cheap ones) are expensive at £20 I think and only last three hours which is great for its size but not practical when a charging source isn't accessible on the go
    Thanks!!

      +Richard Donaldson Hi Richard, I buy after market batteries off Ebay for both the Hero4 Silver and Panasonic HC-X900, they are a lot cheaper, make sure you look at the sellers feedback and that they are reputable. I have an Anker USB battery bank which can recharge phones/batteries etc.. but use it mostly to run the Hero4 on a nightlapse as like you say a battery will only last a short while and an extenal pack will power the Gopro all night. The internal mic on the HC-X900 is not bad for a camcorder, most are shite and its has limitations. Wind noise is the biggest sound killer so cover the mic hole with cotton wool or foam held on with an elastic band, no need to buy expensive wind jammers etc.. I have the audio set to stereo and when I zoom in the camera automatically changes to zoom mic. In post I do raise audio levels for some quiet scenes but overall if you address wind noise you shouldn't have many audio probems with a decent microphone. Gopro cameras are great for POV shots but have their limitations as a stand alone camera and the audio from them aren't very good

      +Richard Donaldson Here is an example of cheap batteries including cradle USB charger for the Hero4 Silver www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-Dual-Charger-2x-Full-Decoded-1600mAh-Battery-Gopro-AHDBT-401-Hero4-Silver-/172017794421?hash=item280d0f3d75:g:9EcAAOSw8-tWX~G7

      oh wow!! thanks a lot! I've recently got an Easy ACC battery bank as a friend has one. It's a 15000mah but I'm not sure if I should get another haha. 17 pounds is great! I am looking at an anker solar panel though, it looks cool for hoying over the rucksack lid out of the way. As for batteries, those are amazing! Especially for a micro USB charging port! I'll look into the cheap gopro knock offs though. I appreciate your advice but friends who venture in such mines as nenthead (york way) think they're as good for disposables (I say disposable as they are inexpensive if damaged. Of course they respect them). I'm not after the audio on them as you said. I'll definately look into your camera, that sounds cool. I actually study film at university but sound is my brother's expertise. A deadcat or cotton should be fine, its not like I'll be speaking in the wind a lot. Thanks again and keep it coming with the channel, I've been following for a few months haha

      I'm using the Camelbak military spec Antidote 3L bladder. I've not done a formal review but often praise it on many of my videos. I cant fault it and like the hydration system with quick link connectors allowing easy filling from my Katadyn Hiker pro filter which has similar connectors. I'll also say that 3L of water is just enough for a long day hike or overnighter if you are careful about making your water supply last. ATB

      +Fergs uK There was a few hours of audio to listen through and I could hear stuff moving around. Most of the time its probably nocturnal animals like foxes and badgers but you just never know for sure. When you hear trees breaking on windless nights or hear wood knocks in response to one you've just made it does make you think what can it be. Camped at Harwood forest the other week and listening to 12 hours of audio as we speak, I do an hour each night but is time consuming and want to get on with the real editing of the video. Need to get round to watching a few youtube vids as Im way behind

    Do you not ever put your thermarest inside your bivvy? I always find it helps retain a little bit more warmth, plus it stops you sliding off the damned thing in the middle of the night.

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +media underground I can put the mat in with my army bivy and its warmer like you mentioned. I had my minimal head on when ordering the hunka and should have bought the XL version instead. Its still a nice bivy for summer use but up a mountain and in windy conditions I'd worry the mat would blow away if I rolled of it

    • @mediasubway
      @mediasubway 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Fell Wanderer Aye, used to love waking up in the morning after a bivvy out and see my mate lying directly parallel beside his mat on the grass, snoring his head off. Agree. There's plenty room in an army bivvy for just about everything. A good foot at the bottom for boots and gear and shit. Love your videos man. Keep up the great work and come join us at a bothy in Scotland anytime you fancy mate.
