I am experiencing this same heart wrenching pain. My 18 yr old granddaughter who I raised since birth is pushing me away and this hurts me deeply.
2 months ago I ended up in a Covid hospital ward for 5 days on oxygen. I saw some horrific things that will never leave me. Amongst the nightmare I somehow stumbled on this song on my headphones. I couldn’t stop crying listening to it then, and can’t stop crying now thinking of that experience and of how this song filled me with hope that I would see the beauty of the world again.

They played this at my dad's funeral 5 years ago. I was 13 at the time, so I was handling it quite poorly. At that time I disliked that they claimed it as my dad's favorite song because it wasn't his favorite song. His favorite song was Let It Be by The Beatles. Now that I'm a little older, I understand why they chose to play this song. It fits his personality. He was a man who struggled badly and lost a lot.. but he always hoped for a brighter future. Now he's somewhere over the rainbow, and all his problems are behind him. May he rest in peace.

In 1988 ,late Israel Kamakawiwo'ole calledstudio at 3am and asked if he could come record because he had an idea. He was so polite,the studio owner said yes , even though it was too late. 15 minutes later he showed up, sang and played his ukulele,and recorded ,"OVER THE RAINBOW "in just one take #respect #rip

This song played at my high school graduation. What a great song to start the next chapter of my life. Adulthood is scary but I’ve been pushing forward. It’s almost been a year and I already miss my classmates. I’ve just been coming back to it whenever I wanna remember my old friends and the memories we made together. I cant get through 20 seconds without tears going down my eyes.

To me the most remarkable thing about this song is that Israel just had a random idea for this song one day very late at night and called the recording studio at 3 am and even though it was that late, they let him come in because he was so polite. He recorded this song in one take.

The most magical thing about this recording is that the sound recorded over 30 years ago sounds like it could be released today, all thanks to just his voice and ukelele playing abilities.
The amount of reverb on his voice kind of gives it away as a late 80s recording but other than that, it’s timeless.

And to be more awesome (and I literally only just found this out) it was recorded in one take after he called up a studio at 3am and asked to record something so politely the owner let him do it. He showed up 15 minutes later and recorded in one shot.

I've never heard this song until today. It's truly a master piece this man had some great potential and very great talent. There's not to many people out there that have a voice like his it was truly one of a kind. It's hard to think that he had to go so young. I remember when I was in nursery, my class and I had to sing this song to the whole entire school - even though none of us even knew the lyrics , so we just danced even though we weren't supposed to. But when my year 6 chapter was coming to the end.. On the last day we sang this song to this school, with the projector behind us playing that one time we sang that song when we were 7-8 years younger. Looking at the projector during our rehearsals made me realise that so many people had left and there were a lot more new students anyways- Our nursery teachers and our teachers who were previously teaching us were literally crying and so was everybody else in my year group. That was 5 years ago, now I have just finished my GCSES and I'm waiting for my results to come back.. Listening to this brings back so many nostalgic memories.

I knew the song earlier but did not listen this much until I gave birth to my son. With the lyrics I can listen and sing it to my son nearly everynight. Thank you. It has a strong meaning in my life because the day my son was born, the cancer result of my dad arrived and he passed away after 30 days. Me and my boyfriend listened to this after a major fight where we were both so sad and scared that it was going to be over between us. We're still loving each other and still together. There is so much soul in this song. Evertime when I listened to this after a long gap in time, It got me in tears. There is something about the song which is breaks our hearts that the world could have been much better than this if we only learned how to love everyone without reservations another vibe that I got from the song is that it is telling us that all the troubles we face will be gone one day when we leave this world.

A year later, they played it at my grandpa's funeral. It was the perfect song to summarize his love for life and people. My dad and I danced to Israel's version at my wedding. I can't listen to either version without crying.

I went to Maui 4 years ago with some friends. We went to Luau on a beautiful, perfect sunny day. We all were wearing leis, and having a wonderful time. They played this song, and I had this calm, spiritual feeling that is hard to describe, like some kind of dream feeling even though it was real.
