These mechanisms have been around in Europe for decades, literally. The only difference is the glass itself. Here we use solid glass, rather than suspended films.
That in swinging casement window that also tilts is how many windows are in Germany. While I was stationed there in the early 90s I came to love those windows. We could tilt those windows on a nice cool summer evening and have wonderful ventilation, but with great security. I didn't need to worry about my small children on a fourth floor apartment falling out because I left the window open at night. I just love those windows!
This is all quite normal in The Netherlands. My 3 year old house has almost the same windows and tripple pain glas with the extra high R value (we use a different name here). Good to see the US adopting these technologies. Keeping a house warm is easy. Keeping it cool without AC is something else. We use a heat pump with geothermal source to flow “cold” water through our concrete floor slabs in the summer. Very efficient and very comfortable
They are beautiful (albeit expensive) products. I'm on the island and was chatting with one of their folks at a PH event and he was explaining that they fully finish (paint or lacquer) each piece prior to assembling the frames! Glad to see them getting some airtime.

The locking mechanism for the patio door or windows has been in europe for many years, is not new tech but still very nice. And the glass is kind of like a laminated glass, the R value is fairly high, very very nice 👍🏼

@@jessewood3999 It would shatter and the bullet would go clean through. However, the glass pieces would stay together and you would still have difficulty getting through the glass. Obviously it’s not bulletproof, but it resists entry for a relatively substantial period of time. Enough to hopefully get somewhere safer, grab a gun, and call for help.

You had me interested and curious that Matt wouldn't be aware of an R20 window when he's surprised by an R10 window assembly here, and I cannot find any data on their site about R20. Highest rating I see from their premium window line is R11.1. I mean, glass can only insulate so well no matter what you do unless your just adding more panes, and even then the cost becomes astronomical with diminishing performance returns.
What about window sills both in and out? In Europe our house had huge sills, trays of geraniums on the sill outside and other pants and flowers on the interior sill.
Our almost 40 yr old CA house has windows & sliders from a Canadian co. They weigh a ton. The only weird thing is that whoever did the install put the slide on the outside & the stationary on the inside. So if someone wanted to burgle our house all they'd have to do is remove the slider IF they have the muscles to lift it.
Bomber information and products! 😁. Only thing, glass is not burglar proof, it’s the weakest point on a home unless it’s laminated. I install security window film on glass that actually acts as a lamination holding the glass together in case of a possible break in. The film also requires an attachment system that holds the film to the frame creating difficulties for an intruder to get through. It is only to give you more time to get your pew pew or call po po (Funding provided 🤷🏼♂️).
Hello Matt. Nice video i watch all of yours videos. This all looks good. I know it isn't big deal for your location..but if it was more to north i would worry about rust on that extra overhang you placed there. In summer that metal will het pretty super hot..so not good at all..but if possible i would change it to stainless steel .
Actually, “suspended-film glazing” technology has been on the market since 2010 (and the technology itself is from 80s from Visionwall company). But it was way more expensive and had some cons (like wavey look) compare to conventional triple glazing. Now the technology has become just slightly more expensive and can get its place in houses. As for me, the best use of this technology are skylights or even transparent roofs, as the film can provide extremely high sun protection (SHGS) and Rvalue for less weight compared to triple glazed solutions and there are no special requirements for VLT for such application.
Would love for you to do a updated youtube video on LiteZone where multiple layers of film can be added to 2 IG units to make incredibly insulated windows, in the 15-20 R range.

Very nice product ! Looks 99% like what I was thinking about back in 2010 when I was looking for the best glazing system for a passive + active home. My concept is a tad different as to the materials are used And far, far from any kind of prototype :) Now at least the project is ready and I should be able to build the prototype of the glazing + frame :)
Windows are so important in high performance builds! Fenstur is great- as a customer, I've learnt a lot from them and am thankful they know how to build a quality product !
I feel Like the fiber glass Could very well Crack, and if you put it in an area that you wont think to Inspect Often to Repair as Needed it could Cause Serious Issues...I wouldnt wanna risk something so Big, Heavy and Expensive to Install only to Have to it Crap out and Need Complete Overhaul of such a Large Project... Then the Casters...as heavy as it is how Easy would it be to Clean/Repair/Replace Casters when they Get Crustified? I do Highly Appreciate Your Show, I have been Impressed with and Have Personally Implemented much of the Resourceful Info, Clever Ideas, and Products in the homes I remodel that You have Shared on this Show. However, in a cold climate like we have here in Scandinavia there are some drawbacks. Eg. though Norway got a passive house building standard in 2011 (NS3700) there are arguments that it shouldn't be the exclusive standard and instead a low-emission standard is more appropriate because it's more flexible. This argument is based on a Swedish study concluding that passive houses may have a lower energy consumption than traditional houses while the building is in use, but that the calculation will be completely different in a life cycle perspective, where also the initial production and transport, and the added energy needs during a future destruction of the building materials are included.
looks awesome but when you find out the price tag, it's insanely expensive. might want to mention how much more expensive these windows and doors are. I needed to replace my 12 leaking wooden windows in South carolina house. The lite zone quote with shippping was I think over $13,000!!!!!! and that was for the glass ONLY, no window frames. Now these are big 3x6' windows, but still super expensive. Wound up getting some triple pane windows used for about $100 each, or 1/10th the cost.
Love me some passiv Haus , but just wondering what alternative there are for the wood, Australian and the west coast have experienced some crazy wildfires recently and I’m sure building codes will be beefed up to stop using combustible materials on exteriors in these zones.
Wood when properly thick does not easily burn through as the carpon build up from the fire protects the interior, the fire spreads inwards only as the outer layer starts cracking exposing "fresh" insides to fire. Concrete however just loses it's structural integrity in heat and crumples. Often the fire climbs over, licking the outer walls, gets under the roof and spreads from there to rest of the house, rarely straight through the wall unless a window or door window shatters or there is a vent to outside.
It' why I like the ubiquity of Hardie plank fibre cement siding and the growing popularity of metal roofs, esp here in the PNW. And to think my previous house had a neighbourhood covenant requiring cedar roofing - which everyone rightly ignored.
I have similar Tilt & Turn European windows on my netzero house that was built in 2018, but the windows are PVC/Plastic frames, not wood. I have 2 Lift sliders that work the same way as yours, but mine are more reasonable in size at 8' high X 8' wide (door is 4' opening to allow handicapped access to the deck), windows ran about $700 each, the lift & slide doors were killer though at $5,000 each (have 2)
That's actually a much more affordable price than I expected. A lot of high quality sliding doors run at a price of $1,200+ per linear foot. Am I missing something?

This closing/tilting mechanism is in fact in all German/Swiss houses. And the brand name is German and means loosely translated Windoors. 3 panes are the new standard here, but your insulation factor is still next gangster kind of level.
Close/tilt had been the standard in the Netherlands for approx 20 years. Although that insulation level is crazy, my new triple glazed windows are U 0,6 which is R 1,66 and it is a lot colder here than in Texas.
Matt usually recommend backer rod for door and window install. Why spray foam in this case? Edit: disregard, tape for air sealing. Foam for insulation.
screwing in the windows from inside the stud seems like it could cause problems down the line when replacing the window, the from the frame out with plug covers seems like the way to go.
So when they cut out the drywall around the windows and doors, how does that Siga tape not get cut up when they roto-zip around the windows to cut the opening so the drywall fits???
blower door score? whats the purose of the black exterior window membrane? if it's not stickied onto the window frame as well Also, you using closed cell flexible PU foam? or just normal? recomandation to use the above rather than the simple pu cheap onel, for future flexibility and better R value from the closed cell structure

Are you not concerned that the metal strap screwed to to framing at 14:17 will cause the drywall to bulge? Matt Risinger understood my comment. In a recently posted video of a young second generation builder, Matt praised the builder for using a power plane to notch the framing where window straps met the framing and preventing the bulge.
@@Whiskey11GamingTo make the trim lay flat at the bulge, the trim carpenter will wind up hammer crushing and tearing out the bulging drywall. Been there. Done that. Seen it thousands of times.
There are a couple things you can do. Steelstuds/pressure treated lumber in combination with a sand barrier, membranes, termite shield (for detection), and treated foam (insecticide). A combination of these will make it hard for termites to thrive, remove their source of food, and decrease their ability to tunnel through.
Curious as to why you have cripple studs at the ends of the rough window sills and why you don't beef up the rim joist to be the window headers. It looks like you are using a double 2X for a window sill. This is typical construction in NE and I never understood why it is done.
Quick question: so if the weight of the door "falls down" onto the track, sealing out the heat and cold below, what is sealing out the heat and cold on top to make it fully passive?

For all that is holy, make sure no rocks ever end up in your back yard. It would suck to have a rock break even one of the sliding glass doors. Personally I've known too many badly maintained sliding glass doors that I don't trust them. But they look great and sound amazing.

Genuine question from a Non-American: I have seen so much flimsy/paper-ish front and back doors (and windows) at homes in the U.S. Norteast where the winters do get cold. How is this possible? Here in the UK the energy bill would be through the roof.
How would you compare these windows/doors with the European package you showed in th-cam.com/video/C2bJ1IWewDc/w-d-xo.html ? Clearly you chose this package for a reason. Was it cost? Availability? Performance? Aesthetics? I'm trying to decide on a supplier for the package for my upcoming home build and a comparison would be great.
I hope you will report back if the quad gets leaky, and you have a temperature differential causing fog and loss of R-Value. I would like to see well insulated windows with the ability of a recharge or repair in the field not to exceed one hour labor time, as even the best window companies seem to have a history of callbacks.
High performance windows rely on extremely tight seals and the cavities are filled with inert gas. I can’t imagine how they would be able to correctly fix those seals or pull a vacuum and back fill it with argon on something like a window in the field. I doubt anyone could fix a serious problem without sending the window out. That being said I expect with the price of these windows there is proper quality control.
I'm cringing at the strapping and screws... You went the extra mile to make the 5/8" sheetrock flush with the door, but those screw heads look like they are going to bow out that sheetrock right there at the edge by the door. Surely not... what am I missing?
Quick adjustment with a router and make a slight hollow for the screw heads... At this level most of the subs are aware and looking for those kinds of issues....
Wait, expandable foam around the doors/windows?!? What happened to the backer-rod method and the air sealing from the inside so it can dry to the outside? Is this due to the tape you are using on the outside now?
Lift and slide from Marvin $2-2500k per linear foot (not including installation costs) in my area, New England Can’t imagine that fancy glass being cheaper than what Marvin offers
@@josecito976 a massive sliding door like that I would expect an easy $20k. We need to balance our “wants” with our “needs”. In my case that means a smaller house so that I can build to higher standards. A good window/door package will always cost a pretty penny.

You can still frame a house out of 4x2 in a FZ in Oz

These windows would look good on an ICF home with 18”+ walls.
ICF is the same price as a framed house at the moment for the first time ever. However can’t do quite as custom of a house.

This closing/tilting mechanism is in fact in all German/Swiss houses. And the brand name is German and means loosely translated Windoors. 3 panes are the new standard here, but your insulation factor is still next gangster kind of level.
Close/tilt had been the standard in the Netherlands for approx 20 years. Although that insulation level is crazy, my new triple glazed windows are U 0,6 which is R 1,66 and it is a lot colder here than in Texas.

Matt usually recommend backer rod for door and window install. Why spray foam in this case?
Edit: disregard, tape for air sealing. Foam for insulation.

screwing in the windows from inside the stud seems like it could cause problems down the line when replacing the window, the from the frame out with plug covers seems like the way to go.

Yeah, while air tightness test he mentioned that the door glass not delivered yet they set a plywood instead

So when they cut out the drywall around the windows and doors, how does that Siga tape not get cut up when they roto-zip around the windows to cut the opening so the drywall fits???
Probably measure /template and cut it elsewhere, no way I'd let a rotozip near that install.

recomandation to use the above rather than the simple pu cheap onel, for future flexibility and better R value from the closed cell structure
I know this is old, but everyone should check out VIG (vacuum insulated glass) windows. Barely over two panes thick starting at R-10

Are you not concerned that the metal strap screwed to to framing at 14:17 will cause the drywall to bulge? Matt Risinger understood my comment. In a recently posted video of a young second generation builder, Matt praised the builder for using a power plane to notch the framing where window straps met the framing and preventing the bulge.
Drywall can easily compress around a screw head like that with some pressure... not exactly the ideal way to do it, but... it can be done....
@@Whiskey11GamingTo make the trim lay flat at the bulge, the trim carpenter will wind up hammer crushing and tearing out the bulging drywall. Been there. Done that. Seen it thousands of times.

There are a couple things you can do. Steelstuds/pressure treated lumber in combination with a sand barrier, membranes, termite shield (for detection), and treated foam (insecticide). A combination of these will make it hard for termites to thrive, remove their source of food, and decrease their ability to tunnel through.
Curious as to why you have cripple studs at the ends of the rough window sills and why you don't beef up the rim joist to be the window headers. It looks like you are using a double 2X for a window sill. This is typical construction in NE and I never understood why it is done.
Quick question: so if the weight of the door "falls down" onto the track, sealing out the heat and cold below, what is sealing out the heat and cold on top to make it fully passive?
There are gaskets on the top that also seal when it lowers, it's a really cool system to see it in person !

For all that is holy, make sure no rocks ever end up in your back yard. It would suck to have a rock break even one of the sliding glass doors.
Personally I've known too many badly maintained sliding glass doors that I don't trust them. But they look great and sound amazing.

@Matt Risinger I hope you don't plan on installing a composite deck outside of that door. Check the specs on your decking material the reflected heat of the high efficiency glass can ruin your deck.
How is the clarity? Every layer of film you add must lower it. The off-axis view must get even worse. I get why they are bomber and the r value.

a house when properly built does not sag unless it's a timber framing where you take that in to account and space accordingly.
In USA you use R as thermal resistance , we use U as thermal dispersion... damn 😂

Genuine question from a Non-American: I have seen so much flimsy/paper-ish front and back doors (and windows) at homes in the U.S. Norteast where the winters do get cold. How is this possible? Here in the UK the energy bill would be through the roof.
How would you compare these windows/doors with the European package you showed in th-cam.com/video/C2bJ1IWewDc/w-d-xo.html ? Clearly you chose this package for a reason. Was it cost? Availability? Performance? Aesthetics? I'm trying to decide on a supplier for the package for my upcoming home build and a comparison would be great.

I hope you will report back if the quad gets leaky, and you have a temperature differential causing fog and loss of R-Value. I would like to see well insulated windows with the ability of a recharge or repair in the field not to exceed one hour labor time, as even the best window companies seem to have a history of callbacks.
High performance windows rely on extremely tight seals and the cavities are filled with inert gas. I can’t imagine how they would be able to correctly fix those seals or pull a vacuum and back fill it with argon on something like a window in the field. I doubt anyone could fix a serious problem without sending the window out. That being said I expect with the price of these windows there is proper quality control.
According to LightZone's website, their windows don't contain any gas.

Matt is anyone building high performance windows with ALON glass?
I'm cringing at the strapping and screws... You went the extra mile to make the 5/8" sheetrock flush with the door, but those screw heads look like they are going to bow out that sheetrock right there at the edge by the door. Surely not... what am I missing?
Quick adjustment with a router and make a slight hollow for the screw heads... At this level most of the subs are aware and looking for those kinds of issues....

Wait, expandable foam around the doors/windows?!? What happened to the backer-rod method and the air sealing from the inside so it can dry to the outside? Is this due to the tape you are using on the outside now?

@@josecito976 a massive sliding door like that I would expect an easy $20k.
We need to balance our “wants” with our “needs”. In my case that means a smaller house so that I can build to higher standards. A good window/door package will always cost a pretty penny.
@@4philipp totally agree. These products were not intended for mass production homes. By the time everything is said and done, a door such as this one could easily end up costing 40-50k
