I've heard a lot of great songs for this gems in the rough thing, but this is the first one I want to figure out the structure and look at under the hood.
The melody is all within a C shape chord with the capo on the 5th fret (6th fret in video, but that's only 'cause my guitar is a half-step down). I beleive that means its in F. It's a squirrely way of doing it, there's probably a better way of going about it. Another fella wanted a tab, maybe I'll make one 😄

I was more interested in the "structure", that's one of the things that struck me, the when "what" happens in the song, the sections and their patterns. It has to me on first listen a stream of conscience feel, but that might be a blind spot in me. In some songs I get caught in the flow too much to listen analytically. I had the same thing when "Mr Jones" by Counting Crows came out (I'm old). I heard it as almost a through-composed piece which it clearly isn't, but I guess it has a foward motion that I get distracted by. It's, by the length of this comment alone, a "me" issue. Bur you are doing something right. Your East Palestine song is an achievment imho. We don't often hear song writers explore the full range of our vocabulary. I'll let you get back at it. @@loulasher It's pretty much the same melody repeated. The chorus and intro are identical, and the verses hold on to a portion of the melody a bit longer. And then there's the hammer-on thingy I do that's sort of a bridge between the verses and chorus. It's pretty loose, might be that "stream of conscience" feel you were talking about. Woody Guthrie would be proud of you two! It's such a gift, I think, to be able to give voice to the largest swath of humanity- whether they realize that you're on their team or not. You've made a wonderful example of genuine folk.
Conner Hennessy is great and his lyrics are so good because they are contemporary and hit hard. Too bad the new wave of rebel county musicians are on the other side of the political agenda and prefer not to sing about these topics. Which is why Conner is great but I doubt he will receive enough recognition from the industry. However, regular folk should listen to his music and I bet they will love him!
I get what you're saying, but if you listen to something like "Tulsa's Last Magician" by Willi Carlisle, you'll see similar themes from someone on the other side. It's still good, relatable music
Hunter Flynn got me on the gems in the rough path and I have now found you and I love you song. Epic music and style. Country meets Simon and Garfunkel in my opinion.
Although you didn't get to the next round, your song is the most authentic out of all the contestants that got through. Your lyrics are too real for publicity, so keep doing what you're doing.
