There just isn't anyone I can think of today that was as multi talented and unique. I understand some people find his voice irritating and as someone who has taken voice lessons it seems affected. But that's the genius of it....he KNEW when he could hit the higher notes, but as he aged into his 50s it became thicker and more experienced. Personally, I think his voice, body movements, timing, writing skills and just about everything else he did professionally was at it's best in the late 60s to the mid 70s.
What a gem from my childhood. I have been looking for this on video for years! Anthony was deliciously nasty in this role, but so funny. Newley is extremely underappreciated in the states, but a wonderful performer.. a unique and beautiful voice, gifted and joyous, sad but lovely...and very much missed.
I wanted to see this movie so much but I don't think it made it into the U.S. move theatres. This number is really fun and creatively filmed. Won't someone please make a DVD of this movie available?
It was in U.S. theatres if very briefly. Saw it at the Guild next to Radio City Music Hall late in '75 when I was 10. Remember it like it was yesterday.
I own two non musical versions of this story. That is rare because I am a fan of musicals. (My facial expression when I found there was a musical version of this story was sooo priceless...)
I may own the same two versions. Got the one with Tom Courtenay as Quilp and the one with Toby Jones. I have vivid memories of seeing this one in a theatre when I was a young kid.

The problem is Anthony Newley is too dam lovable and charming to be playing quilp.
I keep coming back to this -it really is marvelous on so many levels
