Ah man, so so pleased to find this!! This was my introduction to Robyn Hitchcock back in the early hours of a Sunday morning TV music prog, watched through a sweaty flu fever!! Like some hallucinogenic/psychedelic god, Hitchcock came to me!!! :)
I was going to suggest watching this all over again, and just listen especially to that gorgeous bass playing. Now I notice that this was posted by Andy M!
I didn't get on with Perspex Island, I think because of the production, but this shows that the songs were good, although I always loved Oceanside. There were other gems on the album too, but the production was cold and clinical.
That's exactly my memory of watching them on this tour in Chapel Hill in 1991. There are various electronic ways to create the illusion of massed vocals, but these guys probably didn't need any help--they were extremely well rehearsed and tight, and all good, strong singers. The 12-string Robyn played sounded huge in the room. I remember thinking it was like suddenly seeing in full color and three dimensions after watching an opening band that was 2-D black and white by comparison. Most headliners are leagues ahead of their opening bands, but this might have been the most dramatic example of that I ever saw, because it was a small room and you could see that The Egyptians were just that good, up close and personal.
Better than XTC - much tighter musically, for one thing - who were doing something similar at the same time. Smarter songs, less pretentious than the XTC boys.
Robyn, Morris, and Andy. Pure ecstasy.
This video is one reason Robyn Hitchcock is my favorite singer/song writer!! He's great!
This is just an incredible recording. The quality is amazing.

What a fine band they were!
Just listen to Andy Metcalfe's bass work. The backbone of the Egyptians.

Lovely Rickenbacker noise! Great pop writing. Tight as ...
Amazing. I was fortunate to see this tour in Stockholm
Very close to the studio version. Tight band. Just great.
Marvellous
Saw them on this tour in the US. "Child of the Universe" was the showstopper!
Jesus, that was nearly a quarter of a century ago. Now I feel old.
A year before my birth dude!
And I feel a whole lot younger after hearing this after so many years!
So nice! Love The Egyptians music.
Robyn with the Egyptians is something else. Greater than the sum of parts type of scenario
Would not be the same without Andy and Morris.
Even better
they were something other than else

Why doesn't he play these songs anymore? Can't find any recent live vids of any songs off Perspex.
Mi Casa es Sous Casa Amigo!
This was a TV show called Stage One and transmitted on Mar 23 1992. So was the gig 1991 or 1992??
Multicamera shoot. Very nice. Does the club have their own cameras?
+Warren Baker Never mind! The end of the video answered my question :-)
