  • Juanita Moore 1999 Interview Part 2 of 3. Videographed by Luke Sacher, interviewed by Carole Langer. Please excuse the time code placed on Ms. Moore's forehead- we had them made at a dubbing house rather than making them ourselves- as we did with ALL the other interview dubs- IDIOTS! LOL!
Juanita Moore (born October 19, 1922) is an American film and television actress. She is the fifth African American to be nominated for an Academy Award in any category, and the third in the Supporting Actress category.
Moore had a number of bit parts and supporting roles in motion pictures through the 1950s and 1960s. Her most famous role was as housekeeper Annie Johnson in the 1959 remake of Imitation of Life. Moore's portrayal of the broken-hearted Annie, whose daughter Sarah Jane (Susan Kohner) passes for white, won her a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. When the two-movie version of Imitation of Life was released on DVD one of the bonus features was a new interview with Juanita Moore.
Moore has continued to perform in front of the camera, with a role in the movie Disney's The Kid (2000) and guest-starring roles on television shows Marcus Welby, M.D., ER and Judging Amy.
Moore's grandson is actor/producer Kirk Kelley-Kahn, who is CEO/President of "Cambridge Players - Next Generation", a theatre troupe whose founding members included Moore, Esther Rolle, Helen Martin, Lynn Hamilton and Royce Wallace.

Thank you Mrs. Juanita Moore.... 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
She did an excellent job playing Annie Johnson!!!! 💕💕💕❤️
But does anyone else feel Mrs. Moore was drilled by the interviewer about Mrs. Turner a little too much. Seems like she wanted her to respond with negative comments. Great interview Mrs. Moore... A beautiful and loving woman with grace and heart.
I would have loved to have heard more about Mrs. Moore and her character in the movie.

I agree with you 100%. I wanted to know more about HER - I couldn't care less about Lana Turner.

No I think she knew she would be none bias and honest. You can get to know someone through the eyes someone who knew them..I being 62 years and grew up during those times feel I learned something about Lana Turner through this interview with Ms . Moore.

@@soapbxprodIf that was the case the title does not reflect that. Otherwise she gave a great positive talk concerning Mrs. Turner.

Me too!!! But her joy and laughter along with genuine love for Miss Turner is evident and it also speaks loudly of kind of woman Miss Juanita Moore is in that she never said a negative about anyone specifically. I'm so glad I got to see this interview.. even if the Time Code is plastered on Miss Moore. Her beauty comes through regardless! :)

Seems like the movie was an imitation of Lana Turners life. Ms Moore is beautiful. You could see it in the movie but this video showing her years later shows just how beautiful. It sounds like they were close friends.

Juanita was such a wonderful person. I would have loved to hear more about how Juanita felt about playing her character Annie Johnson. It would have been nice to know how she felt about working with the rest of the cast. From the movie invitation of life. I came across this interview a couple of years ago and I didn’t care to watch it because of this particular reason. Juanita was such an amazing actress. I watched the original invitation of life and I am glad it wasn’t just me. I didn’t really like it that much. Rest in heaven Juanita

I would love to know more about what Ms. Moore meant about the camera favoring a black face, just from a technical point of view and the tension caused when blacks and whites appeared together on camera. This perspective really adds to the understanding of the depths of discrimination necessary for controlling the industry.

The 'first' "Imitation Of Life" doesn't hold a candle to this version. I'd seen Miss Moore and Miss Turner first in "Imitation Of Life". Then I learned that this was the remake of the 'first' one so I HAD to buy it to have both. I was so disgusted with the first version (even liking the actors), that I gave it away not even wanting it in my house. That first version was so phony, it was an insult!

Juanita is as relatable & interesting person in her own right as one could hope to interview, but why keep steering the talk back to Lana?

Denise Borum Yes- We shot this interview in the living room of the house on Bedford Drive in Beverly Hills where the Johnny Stompanato killing took place... when we were producing "Lana Turner- A Daughter's Memoir" for TCM in 2001. It's packaged on DVD with "The Bad and the Beautiful".
