Conan Exiles - gas arrows not crashing my purge anymore?

I know people are posting fresh reports on the forums about gas arrows crashing the server during a purge, but over the last week or so it's been fine for me. Some stuttering or frame loss, but after a few dozen purges
it still does not crash for me.
About 2 months ago I reduced my archers from ~100 to the best ~30, and it quite reliably still crashed after that. My guess is the reduced thrall count and some server side tweaking by funcom are responsible, but it's hard to be certain.
