    Since wool prices are not good, would it make sense to introduce meat breed and more prolific genetics to the operation?

    Merino sheep originated in Spain. Given the history of the Americas, it's unlikely they came to the US via Australia. In fact, the "Vermont strain" was introduced by the the American ambassador to Spain, before the War of 1812.

    Very interesting how sheep featured in those early days of the American west as much as cattle did. Those merinos are an Australian breed.
