Oh no!! I didn’t know about Big Little Yarn Co until now…and now I am OBSESSED! What incredible yarn. Like I need more yarn? Haha nope. But whoa. Looking forward to watching her TH-cam channel. I too watch knitting videos every night and find them so soothing. It’s good to know there are others who love knitting the way we do…wonderful problem indeed! Thanks for another great podcast! 🧶
Loved this video Rachel! Also--Just to put in a word for the people who slowly grow and never really snowball! I can attest to having been podcasting for almost 2 years now and have 659 subscribers--so thats another path that channels can take!
So my 12lb cat that will stay at my friends' place while I'm out of town will hiss at them intermittently, even though she also wants affection and attention... but she's very treat motivated, so they load her up with treats and "good kitty, nice kitty" soothing voices until she stops hissing. It took her a while (like 3 weeks) to get used to them, but I think it's probably a "ok I feel comfortable here and I'm going to stop trying to communicate my displeasure" kind of thing. Good luck with Tinkie! He's a handsome boy.
I really appreciate your thoughts on supporting Canadian yarn companies. I get SO caught up with what I see podcasters from Europe and the US working with and I *really* want to explore more Canadian dyers/yarns. I’m excited to see what you find at knit city!
i liked your discussion about the carbon footprint of your knitting. i too would like to be more environmentally conscious with my purchasing but sometimes it's so hard to ignore the little yarn gremlin inside my head telling me i NEED something.
Hiya, thanks for the chat, encouragement, inspiration and knitty love. This week I finished my 2nd garment that I started in 2021😊 DK v neck sweater in Tobacco colour I had a lot of help and encouragement from my friends at Sip n stitch. I recommend joining a face to face group 😊
Rachel I loved your advice on the TH-cam channel. I do let myself get caught up in those statistics and nonsense and it does get me down. I should know better. It’s been a rough year and half health wise with so many things out of my control and then TH-cam goes and takes something I love doing and makes me feel bad for it. I need to do better at ignoring that stuff and just reminding myself that I record when I can because it makes me happy! You have a good head on your shoulders. I’m twice your age and can learn a few things from you!
I loved this laid back knit & chat with all its rambly goodness. I'm working on a sock heel and just taking my time with it instead of rushing through. Thank you and I hope you enjoyed lunch with your Dad. As for Tinky, you have to be firm! If he's sitting on your stuff then lift him off with a firm "No" but do it quick so he doesn't get a chance to grab on. If he's on your lap and hisses for no reason, do the same thing. He needs to learn!
I sympathize with the yarn lust, I also watch podcasters making expensive projects. Firstly, I can't find or afford most of these yarns, and secondly many would not be suitable for my climate. For summer knits I source most linen, cotton and rayon or silk blends from thrifted RTW sweaters. Reclaiming sweaters is easier for summer knits, because less yardage is required, always a challenge with this sort of repurposing. The ancillary benefit is all the fibers are pre-washed and softened up (linen), and no dye bleeding concerns. As I watch today I'm making rayon blend Nagare.
I feel a bit silly for not considering plant fibres and silk to unravel from old or thrifted sweaters! Clearly I've had tunnel vision on wool, despite loving a good cotton or linen to knit with for summer. Thanks for the tip and the solidarity!
This is my first time seeing you, your name drew me in I live near the night sky park (limited light in the area for sky viewing) in northern Michigan. I like the idea of the yarn donation bin you mentioned. Enjoying the patterns, thanks for sharing
Hey Rachel ! Regarding knit guilt, I think the fact that you do not have a lot of WIPs and do complete many projects helps to avoid the knitting guilt. Thank you for sharing your process and how you have altered the patterns. It is very helpful.
So glad I found your channel !! What a perfect video to get to know you and your way of thinking about knitting and projects you are into. Off to catch up with your whole catalogue now ! Also loved what you said about the youtube stats pannel not being your friend and putting you in competition with yourself. That's a really relatable way of putting it !
Loved this knit & chat. Just like knitting with a friend☕️🧶 Great advice about starting a podcast. I have had one for almost two years now. And the advice about trying not to focus on the youtube stats and just having fun with it was a great reminder for me. Always a joy to watch your episodes. Thank you😊
I absolutely adore your podcasts, especially your insights on knitting podcasts. I attempted to start one myself but felt disheartened by the low engagement and ended up losing motivation. However, after watching your video, I'm inspired to give it another try! Lately, I've been enjoying Maya's @feelin'froggyknits channel. She brings a fun energy, and her editing skills, along with her knitting/crafting content, are top-notch. Can't wait to see what new name you choose for your podcast!
While watching, I was knitting on a cotton Tee in a super similar sage green color to the top you’re wearing in this knit and chat. Loved listening to your thoughts and your rambles, felt very much like knitting with a friend 🥰
I loved the video! I am doing a Master's and it also feels a lot easier than my undergrad. It took some time for me to get used to not being burnt out and having free time... I'm currently working on the Egwene Cardigan by Fabel Knitwear, which is a V neck cardigan with cables. I had been dreaming about a pink cardigan for months, and you inspired me to finally cast it on. Thank you for the knitting company, I love hearing you talk about your projects and your plans for summer knits!
I can't stop thinking about the Dappled Lace Raglan. Lately, I was remembering a top I knitted 40yrs ago in my early 20s, I loved it. Then James N Watts released this pattern, and it's giving me the same vibe. I'm going to order yarn for it later this week when The Knitting Loft has their big sale. I've only watched half the episode so far...will catch the rest later today 😊
I hope the Dappled Lace fills the void of your top from before! It's so pretty and I suspect it'll be a winning combination of fun to knit and greatly wearable in summer. Enjoy!
Sandnes garn actually only use 16% Norwegian wool, the rest is sourced from both Asia, Australia and South America. Good to keep in mind if the origins of wool is important for you 🫶🏼🫶🏼
When it comes to all over cabled cardigans (which can also double as outer layer armour) I can't recommend Caroll Feller's Curdach Cardigan enough. It's an amazing pattern with a super unique construction (in my opinion). I made one out of local German wool from an old sheep breed (Coburg fox sheep) and it's basically what you described - maybe even a little bit overkill on the thickness, but I love it :D
I understand the obsession with a person/shop's aesthetic... I recently indulged in undine yarn from ritual dyes for some summer tops/shorts and it's everything I hoped for EXCEPT the shipping from the US, exchange rate & duty/tax got me... I could have bought two more skeins 🙃 I love your idea of being more conscious of your fibre footprint, I think we've got so many interesting fibres in Ontario/Canada!! You're right that it's more winter/rustic weight stuff though. I'm going to try some trailhead yarns for summer knitting, as I believe they are dyed in Ontario.
I've only ever knit with one trailhead yarns base (appalachian trail) but I really liked it! Hope it works for you too :) Undine seems like a great base - I loooove cotton/linen blends. I can totally relate - the shipping alone (nvm duties) from Japan is the cost of an entire skein so it's really hard to justify... and yet here I am....
This did indeed just feel like knitting with a friend and it was absolutely wonderful! I might have been using this to procrastinate on writing my thesis as well😬.
Ive been working on a rib lace raglan while watching! Im using sandnes garn duo, dk weight yarn instead of the called-for fingering because the guage is do big and i wanted my version to be a little less sheer. Im from ottawa and my family is dtill there so i love hearing you talk about ottawa!!
I'm a big Ottawa fan! Very happy I took a chance and moved out there for school without ever having visited :) what do you think of the Duo? I've had my eye on it but no good reason to buy any.
@@woolseeknitting i really like the duo so far. It feels very much like the holst garn coast which ive knit with before. I really like it for this pattern so far too. I was inspired by Anna Passey Trevino’s version in dk. She used an alpaca silk blend so hers was drapier but im excited to see mine grow! (I also went up 2 needle sizes from the pattern and still not quite getting a big enough guage even though my yarn is twice as thick? Im confused about that but hoping for the best!
For me it's very hard to knit and speak so I admire you for knitting the 4 rows and for expressing so many important things: The carbon footprint of the yarn we purchase is something that concerns me allot, finding local producers ( I found a local manufacturer near Dracula castle LOL), at the same time trying new exotic yarns is very appealing! Also, I have lots of knitting guilt - I could be working, I could be finding a husband and making 10 babies but instead I knit and relax, so it was nice to hear your thoughts on this About the cat - it's just a game for her, you're a new person on her space and she wants to find out more about you 😅
I loved this video format. Knitting podcasts really do feel like sitting and catching up with like-minded people, which is so wonderful when one doesn’t have knitters in their entourage. I think Typical Bliss is doing Studio Ghibli themed yarns throughout the year. It might be slightly more accessible shipping through Canada than from Japan. I’ve been loving Elisa’s Knitting Podcast lately. She has two podcast episodes but I could listen to her all day. Selfless plug, I also recently started a podcast and have a few episodes.
Rib lace raglan is in my queue as well, yey! The yarn I have for it is merino... not sure if this is a horrible mistake, given it's a summer garment. Maybe if I knit it with long sleeves it will be more sensible :D Greetings from Sweden!
Love your podcast advice! I just started a knitting podcast and wish that my audience didn't spike so fast. I'm self-conscious about filming episode 2 😬
what do y'all consider the difference in a knitting vlog v. knitting video podcast? btw--for me personally, the channels i watch consistently are the ones where i like or identify with the personality/values/style of the creator. what makes a good podcast is intangible at the end of the day.
Oh my dear I listen to allot of knitting podcasts, they kind of replaced my TV (i live near Ukraine and I can't watch news anymore) and since you ask about smaller channels I can recommend: Lavender Cottage Fiber arts Podcast, Kirsty knits n Sews, Crowchet Creations, Christine Yarn about Yarn, Memily Makes, Knitting with Eve, Edible Thoughts Makes .... (Not sure about the spelling) and bigger channels - besides you, Leslie Friend ( my friend to knit with, as Leslie always says) and Knitty Natty !
100% agree on grad school being easier than undergrad (but i got my masters in a very similar subject) lectures didn't really need notetaking and i never had tests, many many papers but it wasn't as much "studying" as my undergrad was
Yeah that has also been my experience! My classes are much more discussion based and having more reading and papers on fewer subjects doesn't feel like the same amount of work. Overall very grateful this has been the case lol
can I suggest the aosta cami by knit purl girl? its really size inclusive and fun to knit, and super easy to modify the fit, and fairly easy to switch up the gauge so it really works with most summer yarns (can you tell im already on my third one and obsessed with it? XD)
Advice for dealing with the cat: treats. Seriously, the way to a cat’s heart is through its stomach. Also, if you talk to it in a baby voice, it may feel shame for acting so aggressively (not really, but it helps reframe your own mentality)
He might just see you as intimidating, make yourself seem like a safe person. Be calm when he’s upset, give him treats when he is behaved, let him come to you and don’t go to him
naughty cat? spray bottle w/water, spray for any unwanted behavior. love your podcasts, thank you for spending the time to record them and being my youtube knitting buddy!

I am very invested in the cat drama
The night after I posted this he curled up on my lap while I watched tv so clearly Tinky is committed to keeping me guessing
😂
No matter the name I will follow you, it's a pleasure to listen to you while knitting!
Just wanna say I love your channel and I ended up filming my own knit and chat after being inspired by your channel!
