As someone who spent 2000 hours playing Monster Hunter World, watching an almost 3 hour psychological drama about a conductor, I was not prepared at all to see the commission crest pop up and almost lost my mind.
this really throws you for a loop, i’m sure ppl can say it way better than me but you probably go like at first “oh, she moved to a different country and she rebuilt her career” only for the costumes and screen to come out and shatter any sense of a idea of what was going on
Maybe the funniest ending to a movie in recent memory
It's not funny. It's bitter.
@@PiCheZvarait’s justice
I saw this at the Astor recently and people were laughing uncontrollably over the end credits
@@stilwells It's a new beginning, however humiliating.
@@Wired4Life2perfect description
As I huge fan of monster hunter series, this ending both pain me but make me laugh so much.
It is a great reveal that breaks any expectation, but kind of sad to think video game music is the bottom line.
Love it.
No it isn't its HER bottom line the director is a fan of monster hunter it's just a joke
As soon as I saw the commission crest projected up on the screens, I lost it lol.
It's not about the quality of video game music. It's about the control Tar had in her concerts.
In the beggining of the movie she said that maestro can control time (start/stop music). In the end, the tempo is shown to her through the phone, so she does not "Control" the music she is playing
I agree, I also found it a little odd that video game music was being used as shorthand for humiliating, unsophisticated music that doesn't deserve respect, but on the other hand I think that's how Tár feels more than how the screenwriter feels.
@@its_elkku135 One detail I love was how, upon her arrival, her new hosts had to break the news that the composer for the video game music won't be able to meet up with her. Lydia has fallen so low that she can't even afford the comfort of conversing with the composer about their methods and intentions behind the music.
one great detail is that she is wearing cheap clothes, made with syntetic fabric. What a fall from that tailor-made suit from the beggining of the movie
How can you tell? Awesome detail
I wonder if Todd Field saw a video of an orchestra doing video game music and worked backward to see how a conductor got that job. 😂
😂lmao
Omg!! 😂😂😂 that’s super funny!
I'm glad you commented "conductor" and not "composer", since there was a scene a bit before this clip where Lydia is dismayed to find out that the composer won't be able to meet her to discuss the music.
Bruh 😂
I honestly wouldn’t be surprised, the entire movie feels like it’s building up to this punchline
"If any of you have lost your nerve, than step away now, and let no one judge you."
Ironic
Yep 👍
The thing is she didn't step away, she's still doing the thing she loves and she even still treats it with respect as shown in the two preceding scenes.
@@treytison1444 what i believe she steps away from is the western public eye
When she holds the metropodol 😢😢 I’m sure she remembered someone back home. When she greets the first violinist, I’m sure she also remembered someone back home too. 😢😢
>watch psychological drama about a conductor and the lengths she's willing to go for her passion.
>movie clearly sets the protag spiraling to some manner of "rock bottom" throughout the film
>said rock bottom is being surrounded by filipino monster hunter cosplayers in a vg musical performance
what did the director mean by this?
anti-gamer slander
@@king_big_ppnot really anti-gamer slander, the director of the movie loves MH and wanted to put it in the movie
This was foreshadowed in Blue Jasmine.
You know, one minute, you're hosting women and the next, you're measuring their shoe size and fitting them.
You know, one minute, you're conducting Mahler's 5th and the next, you're conducting Monster Hunter for cosplayers.
I love how you did that. I didn't realize that parallel until just now.
I don't know if she is living in her own personal hell at this point or has been humbled by the passion of her art
the former, considering that this is the only gig she can get and she's now an unimportant person conducting unimportant music and she doesn't really have a choice
basically it would be like if any of the billionaires today lost their revenue streams and had to get a job as a store manager at a fast food chain
As a huge fan of videogame music, i love this ending.
Videogame music is at a lot of times at the forefront of experimentation, genre mixing and the use of classical compositions in order to create truly breathtaking art.
However, there is no prestige, hell, some people hate it just because its from a game, some of the best songs wont be heard because they are stuck inside gacha games, sure sometimes composers get academic recognition like Nobuo Uematsu, but in the world of "high art" she comes from, its all garbage that will be forgotten by time.
And the final straw, she has no control(what she desires the most), she isnt composing the songs, she isnt in the room making the decisions about the tone, and instruments being used, she is only a metronome.
OSTs can certainly be great, but they’re definitely not at the forefront of experimentation lol. John Cage was at the forefront of experimentation in the 20th century and I have yet to hear any soundtrack work that reaches that level of inventiveness.
@@Caleb-yn9ko Who the hell is John Cage
@@milesedgeworth132yikes
hahahahaha :)
@@Caleb-yn9koYeah, 4 minutes and 33 seconds of the cutting edge, the absolute mastery of sound. Truly, the epitome of the avant garde, a representation of pretense itself.
I was shocked by this ending. What a film.
I hate that we don’t get to hear her try and explain what the piece is about! 😂
It’s true though, classical music survives in games and movie soundtracks primarily.
Don't forget movies, tv and cartoons. I learned all my classical music from a cross dressing rabbit and I wound up getting an A in music appreciation class.
The only thing games music and classical music have in common is that they use an orchestra. But games music is not classical music.
@@orangetack1099 games music is most definitely classical music lol
@@tutumazibuko2510 It's obvious that anyone who says that just hears the orchestra, and assumes that orchestra=classical, but doesn't actually know the first thing about classical music.
@@johnyzero2000 Of curse my mistake.
okay but proof of a hero goes hard though
Reminds me of the ending of Raging Bull.
That's entertainment.
Scorsese loves to punish his protagonists in unexpected ways, like in the ending of Goodfellas and Wolf of Wall Street
@@rodrigogamboa4486let's not forget The Irishman and Casino.
Bro I can only imagine a bunch of music snobs sitting around a campfire retelling this entire movie as a as a scary story.
"Some say, however, that in she still conducts to this day...FOR VIDEO GAME MUSIC CONCERTS!!!!!"
Me and the bois when proof of a hero starts playing:
I don't get why many people see this as "funny", or "humiliating", or "sad", or some sort of deserved "punishment". She's taking the concert with all of the seriousness and respect than she took for the Mahler concert. With all of her flaws, she's still a great artist and she know it, no matter where she is. Video game music sometimes has great complexity, and even if the audience is in cosplay and may seem goofy for some people, it is still an audience that dresses up with care to go to a concert, just like the so called "serious audience" but in a different way. Seeing this scene as something absurd or degrading speaks more about the prejudices of the viewing public than about Lydia's situation.
Because it is the complete opposite of the Berlin Philharmonic. Leonard Bernstein would be laughing in his grave if he heard she was now conducting a computer game music in a third world country
@@amitkenan3878 again, that would spoke about Bernstein's prejudices, both towards the videogame industry and third world. Real artists make art no matter where they are.
Because it’s not about the work she’s doing, but the people she’s reaching now. The first scene of the movie is a 15 minute interview and the crowd was there to see Lydia Tár speak (not conduct). They admired the person and she loved the popularity and the power it used to bring her. Now the people in the crowd are there because of the video game music. They couldn’t care less about Tár and therefore she has no power over anyone anymore. That’s what’s tragic about this ending.
Maybe this is how it suppose to be in the first place. Ppl should admire the music not the one playing it or conducted it in this case. @@viniciusrafer3055
@@amitkenan3878 yeah, i would be laughing with him, if i knew who he was. Yet i know Monster Hunter. So thats something to think about.
Kind of cool actually.
Big Macs are tasty, but they ain't fine dining.
That's the price she has to pay for her actions, but at least she will learn something new in life. It would be more hilarious if she conducted Castlevania concert together with guitarist Tommy Tallarico instead of Monster Hunter.
Members of the great Siam Sinfonetta!
She’s no longer part of a competition, now she’s working with art, for art’s sake, for the consumption of artists. At a glance it seems beneath someone like her, but I see it as if she’s been given a new purpose, a new lease on life
sure but this is basically the only gig she can get now, pretty bad deal considering that before her getting blacklisted, she was at the forefront of classical music
@@harveyknguyen In a video game culture too, that doesn't readily suggest appreciation of classical music.
Hmm, I went to see LoTR in concert recently. No Mahler or Beethoven but was it a humiliating experience for the orchestra members / conductor? I don’t think so. Orchestra music is orchestra music. Some is more complex and original and some is more simple and repetitive. As the movie itself mentioned, the most important part is what the person listening is feeling through the music. I don’t judge those who prefer film/game music over classical music and I don’t think the film did either. Tar did not look particularly humiliated by this experience. She looked focused and trying to do it at 100% of her abilities.
One thing I thought about with this scene, is actually, a music score for a video game these days bring in the money. Going by how big the gaming industry is. So it's not really a loss for her, but maybe in the sense the subject isn't her real passion.
The humiliation is when you compare it with the beginning scene: she no longer controls the time. She has to follow the music to the letter. They even give her headphones for a click track so she is in sync with the video being shown.
The ironic part is while she may have lost her authority and prestige, people listening her orchestra are there for the music, not because of a famous conductor.
Is the movie insulting conducting game music lmao
Depends on your interpretation. Some would say yeah. Others would say that the character was such an egotistical artist that she believes herself to be above something so commercial. Either way, it's supposed to be sad for Tar. Not necessarily sad for the audience unless you were rooting for her to be the greatest or whatever.
Kino
Imagine how it may be feeling when a Worldcup-winning mannager has become a coach of an elementary school team.
I'm sorry, what? What is going on? This is incredible looking, but O have never heard of any of this. Huh???
She was canceled for molesting one of her orchestras which led them to commit suicide. She was sued. She was removed from her role as composer. She moved to Southeast Asia and found work composing for monster hunter
@@MovieorBust UM. EXCUSE ME? THAT'S THE PLOT?

Funniest ending of any movie ever
can you pls make super mario bros movie 1/10
In fact, she don't deserve that...
Agreed she’s very lucky to even be directing this at all and not going to jail
Absolutely obsessed with all the people in this comments section who like video games and don’t understand that this ending is pure humiliation and showing a complete loss of status and prestige
Just learne dof this now......What even is this movie?? What does it have to do with Monster Hunter???
the movie is about the downfall of a conductor who at the beginning of the movie was conducting the Berlin Philharmoniker
as for why Monster Hunter is in the movie, the director is a fan of the series and really wanted it to be in the movie
end your ok movie by promoting a good game
I would have just done private lessons instead of stooping this low
The musicians who do videogame scores are talented. The audience loves the music. I’d say she’s not stopping at all.
@@petemccutchen3266 Sure they do but she was the conductor of the internationally-acclaimed Berlin orchestra. The audience and sponsors are not typically the same
Private lessons...by a conductor who groomed musicians into sexual relationships with her and caused those who refused to get blacklisted?
Not a good idea.
@@Wired4Life2 Oh, that's all speculation, we don't really know for sure what happened between Lydia and her students
This is kinda tone deaf when you realize Hans Zimmer did the OST of Crysis and Modern Warfare.
It's not, the director said in an interview that Monster Hunter was his favorite game series and he begged Capcom to let him use the IP. The point isn't that video game music is rock bottom, the point is that it's rock bottom for her.
@@Appalachiosaurus22 I know but if anything, this kinda means she’s gonna bounce back since the gaming industry is much more valuable than the movie one.
@@fulcrum6760 She's not creating music for games, she's composing game music at a convention. Her life was ruined by her own actions, she will never reach the level she once was, so she's scraping by at the literal bottom. In the film she talks about how her favorite part of being a conductor is controlling the tempo of the orchestra, she likes being in complete control, but in this scene she puts on headphones which are used to keep her tempo on track as she plays songs she did not write nor has any love for. There is no future for her, she's forced to live in an empty version of her old life where everything she loved about being a composer is gone.
@@Appalachiosaurus22 Okay that makes sense.
@@Appalachiosaurus22 *conducting game music, you mean? Not composing.
In fact, upon her arrival, her hosts have to inform Lydia that the _Monster Hunter_ composer won't be able to meet with her to discuss the score.
