I remember this game. Liverpool were such a good side under Dalglish, but Madrid just passed around them. It's when I realised that technical ability played such a huge part in the game. Had not so many flair players in the league, but Madrid looked like all their players were flair players.
Bernd was the 3rd best playmaker of the early and mid 80s, after maradona and platini, ahead of the likes of zico and Socrates. Led the German team to the euro championship in 1980 at a very young age. Wore a big blonde mustache at one point as I recall. Very moody as well. He was often influenced by his then-wife, who was much older than him. Wasn’t quite the same by the late 80s. After quitting the national team, he was surpassed in fame by other number 10s such as Gullit. But had a long career in Spain, well into his mid 30s.
There were highlights on Midweek Sports Special, as I remember watching that. This version is taken from a longer broadcast, but I'm not sure where it was shown.
You figured all that out based on one friendly? To be fair, virtually any player from any era would struggle under those conditions. Messi is pretty much useless out of possession at this point and he’s the greatest player I’ve ever seen.
Hugol was a-prolific scorer. One of the all time greats, great nose for the ball.
probably the best in scoring only with one touch of the ball
Still the nicest kit ever home and away 😍😍😍

Agilidad de una pantera!!!
Grande Hugo Sánchez!!!

I love old football matches
hugo sanchez expectacular, asta para esquivar el portero
Great video again Dave Waller.
Beaten by the better team in this one
Hugo the best killer in real Madrid history
Hugo the real killer sanchez
That famous Liverpool number 7 shirt, worn by Gary Ablett, playing centre-back!
Rip Gary great servant to Liverpool and Everton.
I remember this match
I wish someone had the 2003 real centenary tournament footage (same score against Real unfortunately, but we beat Milan 2-1).
hugo espectacular, el mejor re matador de la historia, ojo rematador
I have a feeling that both Hugo Sanchez and Bernd Schuster have played for both Madrid clubs
Also both played for Pumas

What on earth was Grobbelaar doing for the first?!
What he did all to often.. 😖🙄
Bernd Schuster is one of a handful of players who have played for Real Madrid and Barcelona
Not Barcelona. Atlético de Madrid
Barcelona before Real, according to wikipedia, then Atlético
@@JavierGarcia-ny2xdhe made his name with Barca before telling them and the German national team to f*** off.

Hugol Sánchez Crack !!!!
Always drove me mad that English clubs could play friendlies against European teams home or away from 1987 yet were still banned until 1990
vizjon plus
Can't imagine how that Liverpool would've played against Sacchi's Milan in 1988-1990.
Jefferson Huang the reds would be thrashed by the Rossenari
We would have bossed it.
Milan did not even win the League in 1989 so not invincible
...blimey...I've got no recollection of this game whatsoever...and that is the most make shift of back fours...
Was this on ITV Midweek Sports Special or was it recorded for overseas viewers?

It was shown in full on ITV at 1am on the night the game was played
brucie up to his old tricks again crazy goalie cost lfc lots of goals and matches
Liverpool look asleep in this one but I guess it was just a friendly.
Yes indeed. It was the Bernabéu Trophy edition in 1989. This match was played in august, just before the beginning of the Liga in Spain
Age old question about Barnes answered. He could not excel against close marking, multiple markers and teams that were superior in possession.
You figured all that out based on one friendly?
