  • So what happens to hyenas when battling against lions? You might only see hyenas as carcass scavengers, but these extremely intelligent predators will not let lions push them around when it comes down to their spoils. Nature of the Beast is our new digital-exclusive series that unlocks the secrets of life in the wild and provides an inside look at following and filming hyenas, lions, wild dogs, and leopards in South Luangwa National Park in Zambia.

    I watched an old documentary that showed a lot of African lions were hunted (mostly for sport by foreigners), and their numbers were severely dwindled. In The Gambia, nearly ‘ALL’ of the lions were wiped out. But the hyena population was left intact. This created a great imbalance between these two predators. That’s why on so many wildlife videos you see a great disparity in numbers between lions and hyenas, where hyenas seem to outnumber lions 20 to 1. This has made hyenas more emboldened in their interactions with lions, as clans of hyenas will try to intimidate lionesses, chase them from their food, and kill their cubs. When the population of predators were more balanced, lions and hyenas respected each other’s territories more. But thanks to decades of trophy hunting of lions by mostly western countries, the lion population will never be rightfully balanced against hyenas. I was made aware of this after watching that documentary. It was very sad. Beautiful, full grown male lions being shot to death for f*cking sport. While hyenas were left untouched. I guess hyenas don’t look as well on their walls. They should not kill the hyenas. But they should not have killed the lions either! I think unknowingly, this is why so many people hate hyenas and like lions. They see the obvious imbalance in their numbers. And it was unnaturally created by these bastard hunters/killers. So until the numbers are more balanced, I don’t think people will warn up to hyenas. There’s just too many of them! And this condition was created by man, not nature!

    • @charleslowe522
      @charleslowe522 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I have never put what you posted into perspective, but it makes sense. If I had a gun and I saw someone getting ready to shoot a lion I think I would blow them away. Hunters want to shoot the biggest, strongest male lions. The ones, who with their mere presence will intimidate hyenas and keep hyenas away. I don't like hyenas, they are pretty bad ass in their right. But if faced with a couple of male lions who head a pride, they generally will not even bother as it doesn't take much for a big powerful male to kill a hyena. I remember watching a documentary narrated by Powers Booth from 1992 and one of the male's who headed the pride name meant he who greets with fire. If I remembered how to spell it, I would post it. Twice this male killed the reigning matriarch of the same hyena clan. The hyenas recognized this lion by sight and new to get out of dodge if he was around. The first matriarch he killed, he caught off guard as the hyena were feeding on a baby zebra, the second one he killed was actually very emboldened and was following his brother around and scent marking against him. Well Ntchwaidumela heard the hyena and unlike his brother he immediately went after and caught the hyena and killed it. That his name Ntchwaidumela, he who greets with fire, for he is the hyena killer. Well it was documented that Ntchwaidumela was shot and killed for sport. That's a shame.

Do they also not have to eat? Does the lioness and leopardess not have a need to fed in order to keep strong and produce milk for their cubs as well?

    Hyenas are beautiful and smart animals .I think they laugh when they're stressed or when they catch some food to eat .I think they are part cat and dog mixed. I think all animals fight over the food because they all love the same prey and they all want their share even when if they have to wait for it or take it. Lions take it from Hyenas, Hyenas wait until the Lions are done,Hyenas take it from Leopard and Cheetahs its natural for them to do that.
