Well done Dan good video, you get your cooling system sorted out and then go exploring. There is a lot more to see than just your little bit of canal. Try an adventure to "Foxton locks" or the" Anderton lift" you will love it, There are so many miles of excellent canal to explore with so many sights to see and so many nice people to meet on the way.
Hello Dan As a fellow narrow boat owner I envy you being able to live your lifestyle as you do, keep it up. Keep the books coming. Good luck with the blacking. Dave
A really interesting video this one Dan! I'm looking to potentially buy a boat to live on and the financial aspect of it is very important. As I'm paying £475 a month just to rent a house, it looks as though it could be a very much cheaper way of life for me! Thanks for the very informative video! 👍
Hey Dan! Just a question, how much food are you able to stuff into tilly? How long could you float along without having to go shopping? Are you planing to do more astronomy videos? :) Thanks for the infos and clear skies!
Dan, the scenery was very relaxing. You should do a long video with just the boat moving through the canals in scenic areas with background music as a relaxation video.
Great video, nice and informative. Me and my gf are looking at buying a boat and giving the life afloat a go! Just moved over from Australia and the rent prices here are quite extortionate... excited to get a boat and make it our own :)
Thank you Dan for this information. Would it be possible to Video the Blacking process on the Hull when boat is out of water?. and also if a survey is needed on your boat too.? Cheers ! John
Interesting video Dan, many thanks. Great to see an affordable alternative to the absolutely ridculous price of renting/buying a regular home in the private sector - well out of sinc with most ordinary peoples wages/pensions. Appreciate we can't all live on the canals for various reasons but any affordable alternative, that is realistic and properly costed out, is to be welcomed.
Hey there Dan. We've been following you for some time now. As a child and into my teen we lived on the Leeds Liverpool canal, and loved it. I am now in South Africa and we live on a 45 foot Roberts yacht. We love all your video's but I would like to see more of the technical details. How about some footage regarding the engine, plumbing systems and electronics. Anyway, we love what you are doing and we know how hard it can be at times. Hang in there.
i tried to look into spending some serious time on a boat a few years ago. ex army and able to take the rough with the smooth. so what stopped me..... banking. according to the bank they would close the account making it impossible to recieve my wages. hey ho never found that solution love your enthusiasm and a little envious. ty for uploading
I plan on boondocking in van again. did so before in minivan but next go gonna be in extended cargo van with a diy high top with not factory solar panels but built in diy solar roof. check my channel out in a few months for an update as I got to practice with welder before I start conversion. I've always liked the idea of living on the water but not sure if I'd wanna do canal style. was thinking ocean marina as to have access to main port area jobs and be able to go ocean/deep sea fishing and some diving. here in u.s. we can do ur style via rivers but most are pretty polluted. either way licensing (which is such a scam no matter the price) is no where near what yours is. "my" van's yearly state "tax" (I personally consider most tax on "private/slave" property rent to master) was $54 last year, will be higher as think odd years can be paid 2years, 2016 being even year was only able to get 1 year tag. never had more than canoe which is no fee but can't imagine being much more than the van, certainly not over $100. people around the world think lower cost things like that and good paying jobs makes it so great here but it's not. I done prison for obvious self defense as attacker was off duty state person and industrial prison system is big $ if your on connecting end of it. here "your" id is scanned at every job and you must be good person according to the state or you will be back breaking working poor person for many years and thats if state doesn't "renew" your bad person status which they do as they are nazi like evil sob's. really wanna escape this hell hole and thought something like this would be good start but here most of europe is pretty big brother too. I'll probably wind up in south america maybe?
Thanks for this video, Dan. Really informative when trying to work out expenses. When you work out your license and marina mooring fees, is it based on just the length of the boat or the length and width? Thanks, Mick.
like your videos, wish you would let Tilly talk love the sound of the motor. was wishing there was a Canal around here then i remembered the Erie Canal in New York it's about 8 hr's from were i live. don't think they let us live on it, and it freezes over in the winter
Certainly a hell of a lot cheaper than running a house every year haha Just my utilities cost me more than your expenses haha then double that just for council tax :(
Nice one Dan, great video as always. I know your content with that sized boat at the moment but Will you ever get yourself a larger boat (sorry Tilly) in the future? Maybe you'll keep Tilly as a summer holiday boat LOL
Hi Dan, really interesting video. We're thinking of continuous cruising on a cabin cruiser that we're going to get next Spring after selling car and all furniture. My partner's going to keep on working, so we'll only cruise around that area. Do you mind me asking, how do you earn a living?
Dan - winter mooring. Once you have paid for a winter spot, are you stuck in one place or can you move around? For example, if you got a neighbour who makes noise and you had to move on, would you have to pay again?
hya buddy, quick question... do you see many sailboats..around 26ft, on the canals or rivers in england????? I'm buying one to live on & I'm not sure if I can use it on the inland waterways??? please help an off grid hopefully!😇😇
I don't quite know why I'm watching this because i already live on a boat myself! but it was interesting to hear how you do it! I'm on the kennet and avon at the moment which (by the looks of it) isn't as nice! =P i also spend a hell of a lot more money! but to be fair i do like my luxuries! i have found a few things you can save money on tho from the things you mentioned, i found a marina that can rent me out a dry dock so i can do the blacking myself rather than paying to get it done, its quite a job and i had to get the lads round (and buy them beer) to help but i saved about £200 on mine (45ft) i think i may just have to follow your channel because i do find it oddly interesting! kind of like when you see people doing something you know about on TV haha Thanks!
Whats the consumption rate of diesel cruising near 4 mph, in gallons per hour or miles per gallon? I just started reading your book narrowboat lad, living the dream, on my kindle.
Online I found a UK marina website stating the average is 1.5L per hour, which converts to 2.5 hours per gallon, converting to 10 miles per gallon. If I'm way off please state a reply otherwise I'm all set. Your book is real page-turner, I live in Massachusetts, USA. I've watched 4 of your videos and collectively 40 others on narrowboating; of course never heard of them 4 weeks ago. I cant think of any reason to go to the UK but narrowboating might actually do it.
Hello Dan - what a great channel you've got here, full of treats from boating to leading life in the 'positive lane' - I found you oddly watching a video about painting a Narrowboat and pleased I have. I don't at the moment own a boat - I just hire them several times a year and then 'Blog the day' in what I call the Captain's Blog - th-cam.com/channels/sQ0yVtKouBnYgj-03LMhHQ.html - a little similar to your style of pick up the camera hit record and go (no scripts). I've never been on a Narrowboat but I have to admit your making me curious and I would say this, I have looked at the ones for hire along 'your canal' so it might make a change to try this not the Norfolk Broads. Anyway thanks for inspiring me and frankly getting me hooked. Wonderful simple videos in which your passion and personality shine through.
Dan at 7:16 is that a random sheep 🐑 on the right towpath?
Haha yes! There used to be two sheep that loved at the house at the side of canal and they would just wander around on the road! 😂
Another really informative video Dan. Looks like you know what you are doing re saving for a rainy day etc. Big thumbs up!

Another great video Dan, and may I give you a small tip? talk to Ford about the product placement in video to ease the 2015 costs?

Supremely useful, as always... and sort of interesting :-)
Hi Dan, Does your boat have a converter to Convert Battery power into Plug Socket Power and Lighting?
Hey dan im traveling from Worcester to oxford was wondering what your tips would be for single hand? Great videos :)

Way to go, Dan, you modern nomad.
certainly cheaper than my bills lol. Great video dan
Very interesting indeed.
Do you not bother with the dreaded 'council tax' when you're on an extended winter mooring?
Who maintains the canals, cutting brush and branches out of the canals.
That's the 560+ pound boat license fee, also covers potable water.
liking your videos :D realy nice i would love to do that !
NWWsnapMOAB Thanks! Glad you have enjoyed my uploads!
7:07 Oh the humanity, those poor ducks. Just kidding, I enjoyed the video very much and continue making them,
How do you generate income or revenue while living on the boat?
Richard Casey I would assume with a job, he can moor the boat and go to work
Great Vids ,, thanks
