@@reptiliangarden I've been keeping leopard geckos for 30 years and actually have bred mine several times. I know what you are talking about as far as neglect goes. I've seen so many leopard geckos crippled by metabolic bone disease due to lack of calcium and vitamin supplements that it isn't even funny. I had an elderly male pass away last year who was actually 30 years old. So I must have kept him correctly for him to reach that age. Mine naturally just start breeding every year in January and then quit breeding in June without any special cycling other than being in a room with a window so they see the yearly changes in the day length. My females usually completely stop laying at 10 to 12 years old and I had a female live to be 25 years old.

Thank you so much for not having something like “ they don’t need any lights just a heating pad”. I have nothing against people who do use heating pads but I hate it when people promote animals by telling new keepers that they can/ should do bare minimum husbandry for the rest of the animal’s life. I see so many new keepers having to spend extra money on new supplies because they found out that they weren’t using up to date husbandry.

this is a real problem. The basic and advanced husbandry dictomy that should actually be called minimalist/quarantine and naturalistic/bioactive instead. So many more people would go straight ahead to naturalistic/bioactive if minimalist warriors of "lights will blind your gecko" and "loose substrate will kill your gecko" called the things by their name

Very well presented. You brought out a perfect point "Leopard Geckos do not want to be held."
Now I do have 1 that does like to be held, but he also will bite me when he's done. It's not an aggressive thing, it's a behaviour that I, in my foolishness, created. I can hold him for a long time no issues then a little nip and he goes back. Now the others pretty much see me a the bringer of bugs, but my hands are dangerous and need to be avoided. They are only handled briefly to be taken out of their enclosure for cleaning.

Last year for my brothers birthday we got him a leo, when we showed it to him he wanted to handle it so he sat on the floor letting it roam around. Safe right? I guess not 😅 the leopard gecko ( Penny ) sprinted off and went under the small crack at the bottom of a line of cabinets attached to the wall and the floor. We had to take the whole bottom part off to get that stubborn leo out :)

The thing about stuck shed is that sometimes it isn't even a husbandry issue, I've learned. Sometimes, my gecko doesn't feel like using her humidity box, and gets stuck shed on her toes and sometimes she can't get a chunk of skin off her face because she broke it off from the rest and has no way to reach it with her back legs. So, even if you provide a humidity box, it's not a guarantee that your gecko won't get stuck shed.
I'd say another con might be nutrition but not in the way you think. Basically, some people get really confused about the topic of supplementation - you know, how much calcium, do I use calcium with or without D3, I have UVB, does that make a difference? etc, etc. From what I've heard, you should supplement with calcium (no D3), calcium (with D3), and a Multivitamin on a rotating schedule if you don't provide UVB. If you do, then skip the D3, or swap it for regular calcium based on your gecko's response. If they start getting these "calcium bubbles" under their arms, you know you're giving them too much. But there's a lot of factors and a lot of potential questions. Like, "If I feed calci-worms/phoenix worms/black soldier fly larvae, do I need to supplement with anything? Can I supplement them with multivitamin?" It's a weird spot to be in. That feeder causes a bit of confusion, and some people also don't realize that some geckos have certain dietary needs. Some geckos simply don't digest some very chitinous insects like mealworms very well, and it can cause some nutrition problems if you feed them to a gecko that has trouble with them. But you also have to be very careful with "treat" insects and make sure that your gecko only gets them rarely - these are your wax worms, horn worms, things like that. Any reptile can get "addicted" to wax worms, but I hear that leopard geckos get "addicted' fairly commonly. I just don't feed them and elect to use horn worms instead, mostly because I've never heard of a gecko getting "addicted" to them, and from what I've heard they're generally healthier than wax worms.

I had two leopard Gecko's as a kid. Just got a female. Not sure what morph she is exactly. She was labeled as a Mack Snow, but she is all white except for very light barely visible pattern only on her head. She is beautiful 😍 She is still in her quarantine tank, can't wait to put her in her nice big tank when it's finished.

This is just my personal opinion but if you're watching this video because you're a beginner I highly recommend getting a bearded dragon or leopard gecko many people say that crested geckos are good beginner pets they are but they can lose their tail and they will not grow back they're a good beginner just not the best my first reptile pet was a bearded dragon after I got the bearded dragon got a yellow-bellied slider which I thought was going to be a good beginner but no reptiles that like to live in the water are not beginners a musk or mud turtle is but definitely not a writer slider or a yellow-bellied slider out of my bearded dragon and turtles the turtles are deathly harder to take care of

This is super dumb of me to do. One time I thought "shed" was something else, so I tried to wipe it off, And Tiny bit me. I dropped him on the floor. Here is the good part Geckos always land on their feet so he did but he didn't run like a crazy runaway dog. I only thought shed was something else because it was the only piece. Tiny taught me a lesson

I use the arcadia shade dweller uvb(bought from pangea reptiles)for my leo's, its not an absolute necessity like it would be for a bearded dragon but its definitely beneficial and I do see mines come out and soak up some uvb, so I would recommend it and the shade dweller is made specifically for leopard geckos and crested geckos.
