Sundance triple award winner HIVE is a searing drama directed by Blerta Basholli based on the true story of Fahrije, who, like many of the other women in her patriarchal village, has lived with fading hope and burgeoning grief since her husband went missing during the war in Kosovo. In order to provide for her struggling family, she pulls the other widows in her community together to launch a business selling a local food product. Together, they find healing and solace in considering a future without their husbands-but their will to begin living independently is met with hostility.
The men in the village condemn Fahrije’s efforts to empower herself and the women around her, starting a feud that threatens their newfound sovereignty-and the financial future of Fahrije’s family. Against the backdrop of Eastern Europe’s civil unrest and lingering misogyny, Fahrije and the women of her village join in a struggle to find hope in the face of an uncertain future.

I watched the film last night at Zurich Film Festival and I was amazed. It not only tells a story of an Albanian widow, mother and entrepreneur in post-war Kosovo, but it tells a story of a lot of women in this world which have to deal with a patriarchal society. Thanks for making this beautiful film and I do hope it will inspire our Albanian community and the world.

Just saw Hive at the Detroit Film Theatre, very good movie. It was done very well. I was transported into Fahrije's life. I saw an area of the world I most likely I would never experience in person. Also, I want to try Ajvar.

You wanted your own sovereign nation and expect Serbia to be okay with that. Kosovo is the cradle of Serbia's Orthodox Christianity, your people were brought by the Ottoman Turks to inhabit this province. Serbians were there even before the 12th and 13th century, so tell me how your so-called "history" dates back to this time. At the end of the day, you guys got what you wanted. Through your continuous terrorism, lies and tyranny, you managed to create the idea of an "independent" Kosovo, not to mention the 79-day bombing campaign of Serbia, Bosnia and Montenegro. You should be ashamed of yourself, God sees everything. He sees the countless monasteries you have burnt and desecrated to the ground, he sees the thousands of Serbian and Roma homes you have set on fire, he sees the robberies you committed and sabotage. Your judgement day is nearing each and every single second.

Filmin e kam pa ne kinema je pergezoj. Nje ide per Regjisoren: ne perfundim te filmit nuk e ka paraqitur suskeset e arritura me video ne film pra rezurtati final ( si ka evoulu teknologjia e prodhimit ne, procesi tekniko teknologjik, pastertia e prodhimit distribuimi i produktit ne tregun e jashtem) kishte me qene nje perfundim i bukur i filmit me sukseset vizuale - eshte paraqit vetem me shkrim ne fund te filmit por jo edhe viziualisht gje qe ka dallim te madh ne preceptimin e mendimit! So a film demonizing the Albanian culture by putting down their men. They should be making movies of our great culture for thousands of years that has sustained against all odds.
Apparently you dont understand the film at all. They are not demonizing the men. This is a film based on true events of some of the difficulties that many women have had after the war on Kosovë. Many women lost their husbands, their son, uncles, fathers etc. In this war even before it was called a war. Many were raped and beat, sometimes shamed from their own families because of things that happend during the war. This film is about women coming together and empowering each other to keep fighting and keep going when they feel they have nothing left to live for. It's ok If you cant understand it or see the the compassion and strength in the film. But to say it is demonizing the men is wrong. To learn about other cultures and how different they are is truly inspiring, interesting and beautiful.
I'm a man but I realize that +22-30 years ago women didn't really have the rights they have today.
This is the reality, the movie isn't demonizing anything
Today boys have changed a lot.. they're proud of the girls as they brought to us our only 3 gold Olympic medals, the most recognized singers worldwide are girls and of course many popular films like this one are made by girls and we had 2 female presidents after our indipendence in 2008.
