Got this coat for Christmas and have been enjoying it this winter season. The only thing that has bothered me about it is the plastic buttons. They feel somewhat flimsy and may easily break off at some point. Another thing about them is that I notice that they get scratched up pretty quickly too.
Last time I checked these peacoats were a 75/25 wool/nylon blend. I bought one in Russia and wore it every winter while I was there for four years. It was awesome for everything from +5 down to -20 degrees C. If I ever go back there and wear it out I'll buy another one for sure. The wool/nylon blend increases the durability of the coat with minimal impact on the warmth so I was happy to get a blend. The only thing I'd change would be to take it to a competent tailor and get the body altered for a tighter fit around the body. The shoulders were a great fit for me though. All in all it proved to be a great purchase in my case.
Yes, you are correct that it's a wool/nylon blend. When I learned this, after posting this video, I was a bit bummed, but then learned that it makes the jacket more durable. It's a great jacket!
@@tommilano5431 Cheers. I checked the Schott website after seeing your video and they're listed as "32 ounce wool", so it all gets a bit confusing! I'm pretty sure the tag on mine says wool/nylon though. I can't check unfortunately because I stored it in Russia when I left.
This is a “forever” jacket. It will never go out of style. Like a motorcycle jacket. Or a denim Levi’s trucker jacket. I consider it appropriate for all ages. Schott’s MC jacket is amazing quality as well.
It’s not. I got rid of mine. They are so impractical and too warm indoors when you shop. It was a relief to take it off. Peacoats look great but they are so impractical. That’s why the Navy stopped using them. The Carhartt Detroit jacket is much more practical.
I have a Schott NYC leather peacoat that i brought in the Greenwhich Village in the mid 90's the cut is standard US Navy issue and it is heavyweight leather hide. My favorite coat 30 years
Wore mine for 20 years and recently gave it to my nephew. I replaced the side pockets, and had the buttons tightened up once, other than that, the coat is still rocking. I purchased mine at a Burlington Coat Facory back in 2004 for around $150. I picked up a more fitted replacement now that my nephew is running around in my old one.
Ive been wearing mine for 7 years and it's the best jacket there is... i still get compliments on it. May need to buy a new version of it next year though and I've worn through all the pocket linings.
Tom, this was a nice review and a really good video. I had to resort to peacoats and flatcap during winter after I started working in a corporate office that had a more formal dress code, I could get away with the "casual end" of business casual before that when I used to work in tech. The only complaint I have for peacoats and the like over parkas are it limits movement in the car while driving, especially in the seat area. This channel is underrated and I hope it grows more.
I got mine from Japan via Buyee. Searched Schott 740N. After a few searches got a size 34 - I should be a 36. Paid 37USD for the Jacket (Yes, secondhand). Shipping for 60 which should have arrived after 14 days - it arrived on the 8th day! Unboxed my parcel and IT IS LIKE NEW! Fits just right.
this video legit motivated me to go ahead and get a peacoat and I actually found a 100% wool peacoat by JCrew second hand for like 30€ that was stupid warm. Though if I were to get another peacoat I would 100% be looking at schott or buzz rickson's or if I get lucky even one by the OG Sterlingwear of Boston. This video really started my personal obsession with peacoats so thanks for the great vid!
That JCrew Peacoat is pretty good! I tried it on a few years ago, and it was very warm! For me it didn't fit quite right, but they do have it very insulated.
Schott makes great stuff but they don't fit me right and always seem to big. I'm a small guy and their size small peacoats just do not sit right on me. I prefer Fidelity peacoats by Gerald and Stewart. Great peacoats with a flattering form. Definitely not as a warm as a Schott but they fit me better and are extremely flattering with the collar up. And yeah I agree I love big collars on peacoats! It's a must!!
My father bought me and my 2 brothers a peacoat from a suplus store in downtown DC, probably in late 1960s for ten dollars each. It was warm as hell. I really wish i could have one but aint no way i would pay 300 plus for one. I have a coat that looks like a peacoat, its a "car coat" i picked up at Sams Club on sale about 20 years ago for 38 dollars, 70% wool, 20% nylon, 10% Cashmere. made in Belarus. Its warm as hell, looks close to a peacoat. BTW. I wouldnt worry about the "billowy" look of your peacoat being unbuttoned in a store lol"
This one is a bit pricey, and I don’t know if I would get one again, as I tend to like parkas better or single breasted coats. That car coat sounds like it’s a great option!
@tommilano5431 its a long wool coat, not heavy at all. Definately would need a good wool sweater underneath it for temps below freezing. P coat is warmer. I would think you would never really need to buy another p-coat. Just beef up buttons like you did, sew up any tears. Also, i really have no need for a pcoat in Houston.
100% wool would be great, but it’s also $390. If you want something that’s 100% and that looks nice you’re pushing at least 500 so I’d say it’s a pretty good deal seeing as it’s still warm, and looks good
I just bought this one! I’m happy to see that I made a great purchase. Would you advise wearing this peacoat in a city with temperatures from 10C - 16 C/ 50F - 60F?
No, this peacoat is very warm and you will most likely overheat! I would only wear it when the temperatures dip well below 50F, since this particular one runs very warm! Some cheaper models that you can find in department stores won't be as insulating, and you can probably get away with wearing them in warmer weather. I would recommend going with a different style jacket like a quilted or field jacket once it gets warmer though.
From the website: Style 740 is an 80/20 wool/nylon blend. Maybe they changed the composition for new models. Could you check if yours is 100% wool, please?
Great video. This is just what I needed. Is the fit true to size? Or should I upsize? According to website, I am size 38 but my wife thinks I should upsize to 40 in case I want to layer a thick sweater. Should I stick with the 38?
I find this jacket to run a bit big. I’m a size 42, but own this in a size 40. The 38 fit me as well, but it was too snug, and I wouldn’t be able to layer. Start with your normal size, as this one isn’t a slim fit coat.
Okay Tom….I bit the bullet yesterday and ordered the Navy Schott 740 from O’Connells in Buffalo. Presently priced at $345. Keep up the great vids, thanks! @@tommilano5431
Is it very water resistant? I saw an iron snail video about a WWII kersey wool peacoat and he runs it under a heavy flowing tap and the water just flows right off and doesn't soak in! Is yours black or dark navy?
It’s decently water resistant, but I wouldn’t rely on it for a long time in the rain, that’s what a parka jacket is for. But, if it gets soaked, it will still be warm which is why the US Navy used them on the ocean (according to my research). This is dark navy. Thanks for watching.
I used my wool "car coat" in Germany last week on company business in a drizzle and it was fine. Its made in Belarus, black, 70% wool, 20% Nylon, 10% Cashmere. Lools like a peacoat but its not.
