I rescued one once a few years back, tangled up in fishing line. It gripped my finger like a vice, but otherwise just sat there for about 10 mins whilst i unwound the line. It wasn't even in a rush to fly away afterwards, just sat on my hand until it was ready and off it went.
Well they certainly have little owls in Yorkshire. I remember waking up under a dry stone wall one evening to find one little owl standing on my bike saddle and the other tucking in to the remains of my egg mayo sandwich. Things like this were always happening to me. A good way to see wildlife this. Simply go to sleep in the countryside and when you wake up BINGO! A surprise. Dry stone provides a perfect block of flats for these lovely creatures, apparently. Nice one Liam! 🌟👍
Until you actually see one, it’s difficult to comprehend just how small these tiny owls are! They are beautiful and although not indigenous, don’t really compete with our native owls. Love buzzards too! I see them every day and consider myself lucky to see them. Thank you 😊
Hi Liam brilliant video love owls they are my wife’s favourite birds she has lots of ornaments of owls and we do get them in are garden occasionally love the way you explain all about the wildlife you show keep up the amazing work and videos Bernard
When I was a child of about eight, a little own tumbled down our parlour chimney. We kept it in the outside wash house for several months and fed it on earthworms before releasing it. It finally alighted on a large tree, two doors down from our house, having come back to us momentarily, but we shooed it away again and never saw it thereafter. I live and was born in Burry Port, some fifteen miles west of Swansea, West Wales.
We have them here in Florida. They’re called burrowing owls. Same size, eyes, and cuteness galore! We love our little owls and see them mostly on our evening walks. Blessings to you!
@@rmuller366 it's part of the same genus: _Athene_ . Burrowing owls are _Athene cunicularia_ and little owls are _Athene noctua_ . Not too distantly related. 🦉
Got little owls round our way (Sussex) as an outdoor man I’ve encountered them many times. Mainly because once it’s dark they don’t seem to believe that you can see them. I once had to stop the car as there was a Little Owl in the middle of the road. I beeped the horn, and it just stared at me, so I automatically assumed “ oh ok you’re injured”. I open the car door…he sits….I get out of the car….he sits…..I walk towards him, and when I get about 8 feet away, suddenly he’s all “oh crap! He can see me!” and flies off completely fit and well! I’ve had similar experiences walking the dog at dusk….they’re great though, and I’m always pleased if I see any Owl.
Thanks Avril. Some is my own footage and some is creative commons. Just after filming the outro is when I heard and saw the great spotted woodpecker, I actually caught the drumming on record. Cheers
Hi Liam, I've had a pair of Tawny Owls nesting in my garden for the past 4 or 5 years, would love to see you do a short video about Tawny Owls, always ready to learn about our wonderful wildlife.
Lovely film of such beautiful little birds. Don't think I've heard their call, that was good to hear and like the reference to the Greek god Athene of wisdom, always interesting to learn such things. Great work and thanks for upload.
Thank you so much Rob. I'll be releasing one in the next 24 hours which will be a bit less in quality but hopefully it'll be interesting enough for people to still enjoy.
Thanks Liam, I like all things Owl. We have quite a healthy number here where we live in Cornwall but they are Barn Owls and a real treat to see them flying overhead in the early evenings
Along with the call of frogs in Spring, the calls of owls at night is something I love to hear. We have tawny owls in the woods around us and it's great to hear them at night through an open window as you lie in bed.
I used to think that until a Tawny Owl set up shop in a tree outside my bedroom window. I went from ‘ahhhhhhhhh!’ to SHUT UP YOU BASTARD! very quickly. Best heard in the distance.
Sounds similar to the Scops Owl here in Greece, they have just start calling first, second week of March, heard my first one last week. They are also small.
Thank you and very interesting. I am an owl lover and have many books, ornaments etc. I think owls are incredible birds and are a perfect fit in our ecosystem. 🦉 ❤
We have owls (likely tawny) hooting at the top of the road and I still haven't managed to see one. Other people have seen them at dusk in the trees but I've not been lucky yet- even walked past a tree and suddenly heard a loud HOOT, but was too dark to see! In other wildlife news I saw a black swan today, word of mouth people had been visiting to see it and I found one on a large lake near Chesterfield. Seemed to be only one so likely an escapee from Slimbridge apparently, as they are native to Australia! Really beautiful to see though, even if seems little chance it will be able to breed (maybe a good thing though as I read after they could out-compete our native swans in future if given the chance). Incredible footage here too btw!
I somehow missed this video until now. As always a great video and very informative. Until a couple of years ago I’d get a little owl sat outside my bedroom window every evening but I haven’t seen him/her for ages now.
Thanks Dan. Glad you found the video in the end and now you have commented, TH-cam is likely to recommend the next one I upload too (Chaffinches, this evening or tomorrow.)
I live in the Valencian countryside, Spain. we have loads of owls here! Small/little Owls as well as others, they seem to hunt around our house for about a month, calling to each other, sounds like the mewling of a cat! They move on only to return a few weeks later, as if they've hunted near us and cleared all food sources. They then return about 4-6weeks later.my neighbours I caught a pair of.them on a sat next to each other on a tree at sunset, on video, from a distance, one evening In October this year, 2023. I'm not sure if they are Little Owls though. I'm going to Try and post it on my TH-cam channel, please take a look, let me know which type they are if you can! Enjoyed learning about them from your video. Thank you. 😘😘Chez in Lliria Valencia Spain
We have Owl Service Pest Control. He sits up in the bamboo and watches out for mousies, one time I caught him at the pond's edge eyeing the gold fish, he did get one, but it was such a hassle hauling through the net he's gone back to strictly rodents, plenty and more easily available. You can see Our Owl in my videos. Go Look !
We have a lot of them inside the Bucharest , around buildings areas. Last evening i was trying to save a very small/young one dropped from nest (strong storm) and hunted by cats... but sadly he didn't make it :(, was unable to resist until in the morning when they can take it at an local wildlife foundation (visulluanei). Last year i manage to save one which was hunted by crows and cats, but even if was yound and unable to fly more than 3meters, definitely was bigger than last one which weighting about 30grams and was big as a paper cofee cup..
I live in Thailand. One morning whilst getting in my car to go to work, I heard a noise looked around and saw a Small Owl attacking a snake! Trying to grab it and fly away with it! I was spell bound watching the incident! The snake got away! * Owls are considered unlucky if you see them here!
I am shocked how little they look, I think there were ground owls in my grandparents field that must have been small as these owls, the owls in your video must not have had a 22 inch wingspan, they look too small, they even looked smaller than the ground owls at my grandparents old place! maybe they were small one there...
Well soon revert back to needing someone else walking in front of us with a flag to notify others of our prescence🤦♂️ Our village has just been reduced to 20mph, without consultation, in 6 weeks, I think I've seen 3, maybe 4 sticking to it.😂
Question When breading season approaches, the male will begin to do fake mating attempts. he will mount the female, look her down and end the process by biting one side of her face. Is it to strengthen their bond or is that a dominant display by the male?
I dont know the answer to this question, but from the description it sounds like a bond forming thing rather than dominance. In birds that pair up (rather than those with multiple mates) there isnt usually too much of a difference in dominance between the adults.
@@AShotOfWildlife thank you for the reply, and frankly, if it was dominance, that would only make things more confusing since many experts and zookeepers witnessed female owls and hawks killing males when they get agitated (obviously because they can't escape in a cage)
About 25 years ago I used to see Little Owls EVERY DAY travelling too and from work in Sussex, always just standing on fence posts at the side of the road. I was shocked to hear there are only 5000 odd in the UK. I'm going to do the same drive in the summer evenings to see if I see any and I'm PRAYING that I do! Such beautiful creatures, I could stop, wind my window down and talk to them and they'd just look at me with that CUTE angry expression 😠😄🥰

It looks a lot like the Burrowing Owl.
Thanks for sharing all about this beautiful bird. ❤
Completely off topic Liam, but we're getting small flocks of Parakeets in South London now. Great vid by the way, love Owls. 😊👍
Beautiful wee 🦉. ❤️ them

I think 🤔 that Burrowing 🦉 are bigger. I’ll have to check my 📖 of the 🌎 🦉
