The thing about Hu Tao is that she has been introduced to the topic of death from a young age because of her family's work which made her very familiar with it. Because of this she's been a weird kid, even sleeping in coffins with no fear. But after someone she cared for passed away, that's when she really faced death personally. (Keep in mind this happened when she was 13 years old). She wanted to see her grandfather one last time, but then she discovered she can't because he died with no regrets. That's when she fully accepted death, deciding that she wants to die with no regrets too, and she wants others to have that happy ending as well. That ambition is what lead to her vision appearing in her bag that day.
Thing is.. death is not an easy topic. No one wants to be reminded that one day they or their loved ones will be gone and Hu Tao's mere existence reminds them (since she's the director of the funeral parlor) then there's the fact she treats it with enthusiasm making her look insane. She's also very playful and often pranks others, all of that combined makes her mostly disliked by those around her.
But like Dainsleif said in her collected miscellany "Life leads unto death, death unto new life. Why then, should death be taboo? Hu Tao has had the wisdom to see this, though some of her elders have yet to do so."
The fact she's as misunderstood in the fandom as she is by characters in the game makes me sad, that's why I wish people knew about why she acts the way she does.
Not so fun fact: The hat Hu Tao wears originally belonged to her grandfather which shows how much she loved and respected him. No matter what others think, that loss must have been hard for her.

I feel like the way she uses her vision canonically is to light up the coffins to burn them since it’s said that she can’t fight, which is also a detail you can see in her attacks, which looks reckless

Because she couldn't bear to see anyone else die...

"This tale should begin with the funeral of Hu Tao's grandfather.
Ten days before the funeral itself, Old Hu had passed away following a bout of illness. For its 75th Director, Wangsheng Funeral Parlor held a grand funeral, in accordance with the last wishes of the old man himself, to be conducted by Hu Tao.
Only thirteen at the time, Hu Tao, who would later go on to become the Director in turn, made all the arrangements herself to the highest standard, greatly impressing the undertakers.
After the funeral, the thirteen-year-old Hu Tao grabbed her traveler's bag and crept out alone in the dead of night. In her bag were only a few rations, some water, and a means to create some light. She was headed to a mysterious and seldom-seen frontier.
Heading straight from Wuwang Hill, one may arrive at the "border." It is the line that separates life and death, the secrets of which have been managed by Wangsheng Funeral Parlor for generations. According to legend, it is a place where the souls of past relatives and the spirits of those with unfulfilled aspirations linger. For Hu Tao, this journey was a chance to see her grandfather once more before he departed forever.
For two days she journeyed unceasingly before finally arriving at her destination, yet was unable to locate her grandfather upon arrival. Between the innumerable spirits she walked, but not one of them resembled the old man.
She stayed there the whole day before falling asleep in exhaustion, awakening to a night sky and heavy dew. Around her were gathered a few lone spirits, clapping and laughing:
"Silly girl, why would Old Hu be here of all places? What were you thinking, looking for your relatives here?"
Not one to be swayed so easily, Hu Tao continued to wait, day after day. Her rations gradually disappeared and her water supplies drained away, but her grandfather did not appear. In the end, it was a little old woman who came to her.
She laid eyes on the exhausted Hu Tao and smiled as she spoke: "Look at your stubbornness, you're exactly like Old Hu. It's a shame, but none of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor Directors would ever linger here. You come from a family of plain speakers, so let me return the favor... Go back. Go back to where you came from."
The old woman bid farewell to Hu Tao, before passing over the border and into the distance. Hu Tao watched as the figure of the mysterious woman grew smaller and disappeared, as a sense of doubt tinged with relief manifested itself.
At last she came to the conclusion: her grandfather's absence was due to him having passed over the border as soon as he'd arrived, to the place where he was bound. He had been open and honest in life, leaving behind no regrets, so was it right for his departure to be framed in regretful terms?
With a smile, she set forth on the return journey.
The faraway moon had been casting a thin light on the way over but had now been replaced by the bright light of dawn. As she walked, Hu Tao thought of a saying that her grandfather had often quoted: "Live in life, die in death. Follow your heart, do what you can."
It was noon when Hu Tao arrived home. She climbed over the wall into the rear courtyard, went straight to her room, and unpacked her travel bag.
With her food and water long gone, and the rest of her belongings unpacked, the bag she had taken for empty instead contained a colorful Vision. Just when had it arrived?
As one of the few living that had dared to visit the border, perhaps Hu Tao's actions had moved some unknown god.
Perhaps this then constituted a heavenly gift... the ultimate recognition of her strength."

I always liked hutao. I she was the first character that was introduced to me in Genshin, (I’m the type that does a bit of research before something) and when I found out about her story, I liked her immediately. She accepts death as a what it is, a part of the cycle of life. People view her as nothing more than a prankster, and some even view her as crazy. Also, Hu Tao actually tried to be friends with Qiqi after serveral attempts to bury her. It’s quite sad actually of how people view her.

I remember reading all of her character stories, and i'll be honest it made me love her more. she's the character who made me play the game in the first place, and her lore does not disappoint me at all.
I often hear people ask why so many genshin characters have sad backstories, then it clicked: they say people’s characters are only truly tested in times of immense stress, and visions are basically evidence of that person’s determination

more about this: in hu tao’s story quest, you go to the beyond and talk to a few people who haven’t passed on yet. and one of them tells you that of course director hu before her wasn’t found in the beyond-because the funeral directors never have any regrets after death. hu tao reflects on how she feels the same and she takes her job as a gift.

Whenever I think about Hu Tao's Stone Lion story, I always wondered if she had perhaps just been attending to the needs of a pair of "cilents". After all, she's incredibly serious in regards to handling the processions of the dead, regardless of social status and wealth.
Perhaps the spirits of neglected strays had possessed the statues and Hu Tao helped them move on by caring for them.

And actually there is a line about it İn hu taos story quest traveler asks why she became a director at a funeral parlor and hu tao says “ being the director of wangsheng funeral parlor was the right choice for them they left the life without regrets”
Hu Tao is just an awesome character in general. Her design, personality, aesthetic, vibe, uniqueness and backstory is all really well written and portrayed. I got into genshin when I saw her on an ad. Hu Tao is a special character for me.

Im not really a fan of hutao but upon knowing her story Im kinda sad for her and happy at the same time that she is strong enough to do her duty as funeral director at her young age that for me is admirable, seeing death everyday without being teary or moved by it and staying strong for her duty as her grandpa's wish.

Hu Tao has always been comfortable with death thinking it was a kind of superficial thing and it just happens to everyone. Well, til she encountered the meaning of death itself when her grandpa passed. That's when she realized the true meaning of death-- separation.
No wonder she's playful. As it is her outlet and she has a clear conception of life with no regrets.

A sadder fact is, that this is a reason why she wants to bury Qiqi. It makes her sad how a little zombie girl just can't go peacefully to the afterlife and is living day after day, outliving her lived ones, never aging. She just wants Qiqi to have peace, and most likely doesn't understand why Qiqi wants to stay.
And Qiqi is just like "I hate this btch"
It only makes it worse that so many people in Liyue hate her…

I was born into a family with a lot of achievements and a reputation in my home town. And bc of her playful and mischievous nature ppl dont rlly like her. Some might have even viewed her as a disappointment. In qiqi's voiceline she even said that she despises hu tao, same with Xiao saying that her enthusiasm is annoying and Zhongli saying he cant deal with her, Chongyun saying that hu tao made his blood boil. it rlly makes me sad ngl bc of that fact that she literally works at a funeral parlor, i feel like its very stereotypical of ppl to expect her to be solemn and serious all the time bc she deals with the deceased for a living. the reason I got to relate to her too much couz just like her I grown up together with my Grandpa who honestly... the only person on my family when I was a kid who I truly experience love even without realizing it. thou we fight somethings in the end of the day we sleep together on the bed as a kid while he use a fan to ease the eat and so no mosquitos bite me since we live on a tropical country. when he died it never sink in couz I got used to seeing his face looking dead as I keep looking at him before sleeping checking if he still breathes(an old habit until now). only cried so much when they start burying him but I ran away before crying. sadly if he still alive now he will probably sad what couz of what I am now today.
