the small creatures are cyclops strenuus, that molt is from a mosquito and the waterbeetle dytiscus marginalis is a verry big predator, their larva are even bigger predators
Is it a mosquito molt or is it a dragonfly molt? Not sure if there's even dragonfly in that part of Croatia, but the ones we have look like that. Our mosquitoes don't get that big in the midwest, though.
@@mustangmckraken1150 Dragonflies occur on every continent (besides Antarctica) so there are probably some native Croatian species. I agree that its probably a mosquito larvae molt though - dragonfly nymphs don't have the same slender bodyplan as adults and tend to be much stouter/fatter. They also have a very well-defined head, jaws, thorax, and legs in every stage. The molt in the video has the slender abdomen and rounded, hairy thorax (without visible legs) thats characteristic of mosquito larvae.
From my previous experiences with keeping diving beetles, putting them from a dry enclosure to a water filled tank causes them to float like this sometimes. I always let mine go in the water themselves so they don't float. The beetle could have hurt itself from the fall as well when you found it.
I am so, so excited and happy to see a Great Diving Beetle! My mom found a male one last March but sadly he died in the summer. He had suction cup feet in the front for holding onto the female during mating! He was brown. Something great about them is they don't need a filter for their aquarium! Also they have a nasty, venomous bite, so watch out for that. It liquifies the innards of the small fish, insects, mealworms, whatever you feed it! They eat dried bloodworms too but we couldn't find the right ones. Lots of info on Google! Also she will want to be able to come out of the water and sit on something sometimes. They store air under their wings so they can dive for a long time, and they get the air by sticking their bum out of the water and hanging there, teehee 🤭 it's so cute. Most of what we learned was trial and error. Anyway, I hope you see this and that it helps you in some way! We named our beetle Shrek, maybe yours can be Fiona.
Hey petko! Those little jumpy bugs in the water are copepods called cyclops! They are commly fed to small fish and shrimp as live food in aquariums :) also I believe the molt is a mosquito (sauce: I live in Florida lol)
I used to catch these from a local pond here in the UK when I was a kid and keep them in an aquarium. Maaajor nostalgia! They're such a beautiful beetle up close, really rich colours, and so fast and graceful when they're in the water. Their larvae on the other hand are completely TERRIFYING. Also, don't let her bite you. It HURTS.
@@mayoralykah I used to raise those in real life when I was 12 13 years old. They are ferocious predators I was actually fearing them after I saw what they could do to preys xD

I once saw what must have been thousands of these on a beach in Romania, they were all swimming into the sea thinking it was a lake or something. Also they fly with their abdomens vetical to the ground, kinda like with a jetpack, very spooky.

Petko you may want to get a sponge filter for the tub so the water doesn't become stagnant also this type of beetle is very attracted to lights so a lid of some sort is a must.
10:03 These guys are called (in Slovakia) Cyclopes and that is actually a mother carrying eggsac they live mostly in lake-ish waters feasting mostly on animal plancton.
That was a hell of a thump! I would have freaked out with a big bug enough to hit that hard! Yet I own large tarantulas lol. Bugs are different though.. ugh!
In my experience it is pretty important to put branches into the aquarium, because they definitely need something to hold onto while being on the surface. Believe it or not, the breeding process seems pretty manageable actually. I only had bigger larva, which started to prey on fish, frogs or softer shelled insects, but basically anything I offered them. Once they stop feeding and wander around the tank without a clear goal (they are huge at this point), you have to take them out and put them in fairly wet substrate where they will pupate. Larva and the beetles themselves are cannibalistic, so should you actually start a fun breeding project, watch out for that. The adults feed on absolutely everything, i mostly offered Grasshoppers, but anything will do really. Greetings from germany :)
I thought I was going mad because I thought they were copepods as well. They're something I associate much more with marine environments for some reason
I'ld recommend you don't bother with big filtration systems. Hang on back (or backpack-) filters work really fine with small(-ish) aquariums. They dont take up any actual space in the aquarium and need less maintenance than big outside systems (also less expensive).
Uhh I remember those waterbugs, here in Germany when I was a kid I found one in Swimmingpool, thouggt it looks great so lemme touch it - what a big mistake, their bite not only hurts it is a burning feeling for good 2 days (not a nice memory) 😅

May I ask if you bought the diving beetle? If you, can you give me some website that sells this things.
Beetles are underrated
I agree. They make very awesome pets.
Hard-headed at times.
I also love combing through water looking for microorganisms, it's fun to watch.

Since you have your own garden now, you could build a small pond and stock it with native species and have your own little piece of nature
"she ate the egg sac"
you could say that was an eggscellent meal for the tarantula
