There is an old (1962) movie called "Creation of the Humanoids" that had a similar plot. It was years after a nuclear war and the dying remnants of the human race were being supported by robots. As time went by the robots became more and more human-like. The movie ends with it being revealed that humans were being replaced by lifelike robots that could actually reproduce. The last line of the movie was a 4th wall break with one of these new robots saying, "Did it work? Well, you're here aren't you?"
I was about to bring this up. It was one of those slightly boring movies they would play on a Sunday afternoon. The main protagonist was a robot hunter and found out he was a "clicker".
