You truly are providing an outstanding service.
Fact based information, uncluttered by opinions or conjecture.
I always agree with you 100%
However in my opinion, be it ever so humble, you held in your hand, the holy scriptures of reloading.
My favorite piece of literature ever crafted. Nosler 9 ❤️
A totally captivating literary delight, I keep close by at all times.
I started out with an old spiral bound Lyman book from the mid 60’s. I still treasure it.

Over my many years of reloading for many cartridges, I have learned a few things, all IMR powders but 8208 are temperature sensitive, and when using ball powders, always use magnum primers or their equivalent, and H4895 is the most versatile powder across the reloading spectrum, from reduced recoil loads to full power in a large list of calibers.

    • @desertdogoutdoors1113
      @desertdogoutdoors1113  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

In my experience, the Alliant powders are even more temperature sensitive than IMR powders. But, that is the nature of most Ball Powders.

Ensuring I don’t go over book values for my own safety, and relying on their years of data, I’ve been reasonably successful….. however recent load development on a 204 Ruger has been challenging. I’m getting 4200 fps at minimum load of XBR 27.8 gn. with a 32 gn. Zmax! Good groups but excess Std dev??

As PO Ackley said the best powder for a particular load is the one that best fills the case to the base of the bullet. When I’m developing a load for a rifle I always refer to loading manual that show the percent of case fill. It has to be 100% or above and I then start by dropping 2gr and work my up in 1/2 gr increments.

I look for a powder that works with all the bullets I'll load in one particular cartridge.
With 45 Colt I use five different bullets and every bullet has load data with Accurate #5 listed. So Accurate #5 is the powder I use for 45 Colt.
For the 460 S&W Magnum there is load data for all the bullets I plan on using with Accurate #9. Whereby Accurate #9 is the powder of chose for all my 460 S&W Magnum cartridges.
When it comes to 45 Auto I do the same and look for one powder that will work with every bullet I plan to reload in them. And while Accurate #5 is include in five of the bullet's load data, CFE Pistol is listed in all six bullet's load data. So CFE Pistol is the one I pick for the 45 Auto cartridges.
To avoid any confusion when loading charges I write on each container of powder their prospective cartridge that they are to be loaded for, so when I do 45 Colt the container sitting on the bench will have 45 Colt written on it for an extra safety factor to keep me from getting confused.
Now there are some 45 Colt bullet's load data that include Accurate #9 and CFE Pistol as well, so I could end up using them at times to see if I like them better than Accurate #5 with some bullets, yet again they will not work across the board, so they are not my first chose for 45 Colt. And for the 45 Auto most of the bullets have load data for Accurate #5, yet again not all do, so CFE Pistol is my main chose of powder for 45 Auto. And while there is load data for Accurate 11FS in most 460 S&W Magnum bullets I plan to use, as well as with some 45 Colt bullets, not every 45 Colt or 460 S&W Magnum bullet can use it so it will not make the first round chose of powder for either.
There are other powders that will work for one or two bullets per cartridge between two or even the three cartridges but they will definitely not be a first round chose either. Perhaps one day I might play with them, but they are not cost effective to get used any time soon. And again, they will never be my first chose for either.

I started reloading for economy very long ago. There was no internet of course but the good news was that most reloading manuals, even back then, had “accuracy” and “factory duplication” data that gave a reasonable starting point. Chronographs were rare birds as they were quite expensive so you read every manual you could get your hands on. I still think this is an acceptable way for new loaders to start, especially if they are of modest means. I agree with the observation about laziness DDO, I think the time spent on research does a great deal of good. Thanks for the post!

And my handloads are all the same.i only load for the 44 mag, 3030 ,348, 405,3006. 225. I have very good results with my handmade. I'm getting a 4570 die for Hunter. God bless desert dog. When I bought my first two dangerous game rifles a 416 Taylor improved, and 416 Remington magnum I always used RL15. It worked great with all the bullet weights I used, but then it practically disappeared off the shelf and I still have not seen any in person to buy since like 2020. First off load data for the 416 Remington with different powders was easy to find, but the 416 Taylor was quite a bit harder to come by especially for 300-350 gr bullets. Thanks to some guys helping me with quick load data I was able to keep the 416 taylor running with different powders. Now IMR 4064 and IMR 4166 are two of my favorite powders for both 416’s. Also have some 350 gr loads made to try this weekend in my 416 Taylor Imp. Loaded with ramshot big game (my favorite powder for the 9.3x62) looking forward to seeing how it stacks up against 4166 and 4064. Plan on grabbing some H4895 to try also when I get the chance. Good thing I stocked up on primers before 2020 but I am running out of powder except very slow powder not suitable for the weight of bullets my 1:9.5 factory barrel will stabilize. Reloader 22 is the best powder for my 150-175 gr. bullet combo and is unattainable. Neither is Reloader 26 my second favorite powder or any other suitable powder that gives magnum performance.
