Glad to see they had a safety guard around the intake on that Olympus engine, the suction area in front of a jet engine is much larger than a lot of people realise. There’s been a couple of incidents recently of a person getting ingested by engines in the USA, they merely walked too close to the intake of engines at idle and were whisked off their feet an got turned into ground mince in seconds. I did find it amusing when the APU started to move while it was running, certainly made the guy move! Can’t stress enough the need for care when running these things, I saw the result of an engine that grenaded a few years ago on a tractor pulling tractor. Apparently it wasn’t running quite right so they gave it some revs, the bearing that was starting to seize, seized and the whole thing exploded. The side of their transporter looked like it had been shot with a machine gun where the turbine blades had gone through. Fortunately nobody got hurt. But great video
So lucky to have been able to fly on a Concorde, it was an amazing experience even though I was a kid and it was loud as shit and the seats were kinda uncomfortable but holy shit that thing was fast lol.
Now imagine four of these... with reheat... Strapped to a delta-winged jet. The most glorious racket that you'll probably never hear again unless one of the heratige sites decides to fire theirs up. Sad and somewhat understandable for those who don't have much appreciation for such a marvel of engineering... Or who wish to maintain their hearing for any semblence of time!! XD
Check! The best place to test powerful jet-turbines is nearby a pile of barn and in any case of fire you have at least a little fire extinguisher. Very safe for sure ^^

We ran up a Concord Olympus engine on the test bead at Farnborough as a Science"Day out" from Farnham College. It had a 90 degree concrete defector behind it to reduce noise but apparently it could still be heard 4 miles away !. I was in tasked with recording its "Fuel burn rate" from a "Fuel board" that consisted of lots of various sized large containers mounted to a 60 foot long board. You could inject a "bubble" in at the start of the fuel feed and track its progress through the various containers as they were all transparent. On after-burner the "bubble" went through the containers too fast to operate the stop-watch!. Even at full throttle the fuel burn was insane. They even ran up the supersonic wind tunnel with the concord in it to show the "shock waves". The aperture area was 4" x 4" and the compressed air was gone in seconds despite the air tank being the size of a house,

I think I speak for everyone here in the comments section when I say how fast is that truck on the highway. So its three 593s and four reheat pipes short of Concorde type set up but that one engine isn't pushing 408,000 pounds of airplane around . I'm no aeronautical engineer but a well designed intake duct and a few aerodynamic modifications will get you close to mach 1 .

I thought these turbine engines drew in massive amounts of air to function. How come it didn’t suck in the rear panel of the truck to operate? Probably a stupid question but what do I know? 😮
So how much pressure and flow, does the air starter use or need. I guess its more on volume as those 'canvas' hoses wouldnt be able to take too much pressure? The air starter motor is a small pnematic rotating motor, right (not a small turbine). I guess you cant just feed the air to the main engine turbine to spin it up, as not high enough quantity or 'speed' ?
@@thewtf It wouldn't be possible to run the 593 at much above idle - and certainly not with reheat (please don't insult the engine by using that Americanism 'afterburner'). The engine doesn't have its jetpipe and variable nozzle arrangement, which were airframe mounted. PS I was a member of the team at Bristol, which kept the Concorde engines turning and burning.

Love this stuff. How sad am I ?? At 7:40 the engine shutdown caused the truck to rock noticeably. Is that torque, gyroscopic or the minute amount of friction times a million coming off. I know a lot of stuff about older aircraft ((identification and history (amateur)) but where this stuff is concerned I'm a knuckle dragging ape !!

Used to maintain the marinized version of the Olympus (TM3B) back in my Navy days. Love the noise.
Sat on top of 4 Olympus in 1992. Jesus the acceleration was something else.
