Thanks for Sharing! I‘d like to know how should I treat these silica nanoparticles so that they can be spin-coated onto the surface of some hydrophobic optical device layers?
@@Санчес-я1т You can purchase colloidal silica and add it to hydroponics by diluting it. Roughly prediluting the silica in 5 - 8 litres (1 - 2 US gallons) of water and pH adjusting the solution (water + silica) to 5.5 - 5.8 before adding it to the nutrient tank/reservoir.
@@monikamadhavan1728 you have to keep it in colloidal form, don't let it precipitate out. Apply the clear solution on the surface and then wipe off the excess
Silica is not harmful in gel form or aqueous solution. However small silica particles in air can cause silicosis if inhaled regularly. Workers in silicate mines get affected due to silicosis.
The precursor is itself silane. The purpose is to make hydrophobic silica. If you add lot of water there will be immediate precipitation and you dont get the desired hydrophobicity.
It will depend, if you allow complete hydrolysis it will turn into white powder, but if you keep the concentration of MTMS low then it will be clear and transparent.
Yes you can use APTES instead of MTMS, but you should use ammonium hydroxide for hydrolysis, also APTES is not hydrophobic due to NH2 group present as it is polar.
@@WorldofNanotechnology Thank you very much. A doubt: for the reaction with MTMS, is it better acid (HNO3) or alkaline (NH4OH)? What is the proportion and concentration of these catalysts?
@@marcelon26 It is better with NH4OH, for the video I used HNO3 as it gives the precipitate quickly. You should take 2 times NH4OH as the number of moles of MTMS

Yes it is possible to make transparent solution, you can do slow hydrolysis of methyl trimethoxy silane with using oxalic acid . Don't allow the ppt to form, you can use the clear solution for coating.
This reaction can be catalysed by either NH4OH or dil. acid like HNO3. Most papers you will find with NH4OH. In the video I wanted to show it is also possible with HNO3
