Good to see a customer returning to rail service! I go right by Kingston station to bring my son to and from URI. Always wondered if it was more than just an Amtrak stop...

Always very happy to see either a new rail freight customer or one returning to the rails!

That car came from Vanderhoof, BC way up on cn’s BC North Line. Former Grand Trunk Pacific route to the port of Prince Rupert. I worked up there a few years back, and switched that industry while I was a trainee! Crazy to see how far those cars get!

Glad to see service restored. Is P&W the current freight operator? Many years ago the Narragansett Pier RR crossed Amtrak to service this customer but of course the NPRR has been gone for more than 4 decades. Thanks!

Yes, PW is the freight operator

South Coast Videos, I certainly enjoy your many videos in and around Rhode Island and Massachsettes. My mother-in-law used to live on Jamestown Island, so everytime we travelled to see her, we rode on 138 past Kingston Station and the switch tower opposite Kingston Station on the otherside of 138.
I would like to learn more about the abandoned branchline that used to connect to the NEC immediately south of Kingston station and headed east out thru South Kingston and Wakefield. It looks like a good portion was turned into a railtrail. From aerial maps, I followed it east past US rt 1 and eventually lost it in the developed residential area. What was the name of the branchline and where can I look for information on how and when it was used?

Thanks for watching! That line was the Narragansett Pier Railroad. There’s some fantastic information online if you google it or you can join the Rhode Island Railroad group on Facebook.

It sure looked like that one guy thought he was helping push that carload of lumber.

Always fun to see a lumber car from our area that I might have handled show up thousands of kilometres away.

I bet! I’m happy to see some western lumber down this way instead of just buying the local stuff from Maine or NH. It’s good to have variety.

Lumber car from Utah Central Railway. That seems to be a railroad that makes most of its money from car rental fees rather than running trains. It isn't alone.

In the long run it’s probably cheaper to ship by rail than by truck considering fuel prices what they are maybe more customers will start returning to rail service especially if they get good service

    • @ernestpassaro9663
      @ernestpassaro9663 ปีที่แล้ว

That’s the problem they don’t get good service customers would rather pay more for trucks because they are much more reliable

So apparently anyone of these small customers can move the cars around fairly easily. You have to wonder how well they know the systems and set the brakes though. Seems like a lot of possibility for carelessness with today's workforce. Surprised that more cars don't run away. I know they have derailers in most places but that didn't stop a car from getting loose and running onto an active commuter rail line through Canton a few years ago.

    • @SouthCoastRailVideos

They were pushing it in the direction of a bumping post, away from traffic. The handbrakes should hold these cars pretty well too.

Don't you mean wagon. A railcar is s self propelled carriage which can run in multiples. Powered by either deisel ,or petrol some were powered by steam,a steam railmotor.

That can be dangerous moving a rail car without a locomotive or track mobile

Remember that taxpayers in Wyoming, South Dakota, Alaska, and Hawaii help keep these trains running, but don't get to ride.
