Yeah good information, but the audio kept fading in and out. Hanks Mic was especially bad. The loudest thing by far was when Cornelius would freak out and hit the mic with his wings.
I love it when the guest in the first half meets with Jessi and then they have some awkward small talk about animals and how it relates to what the guest was talking about.
intersting, i couldnt help but be massively impressed by his owl sounds.. only issue is the audio is way too quiet, i had to blast up my speakers and still could barely hear hank
Yeah...I have to agree. Audio was pretty bad on this show. Not due to the occasional bird flapping; yeah, it's loud, but it's only occasional. When I have to turn the volume up to get blasted by birds, hear Jessie and Denver mostly okay (Except on occasion), and pretty much have to ignore Hank's additions to the discussion...gotta blame the audio. Still love the show otherwise, though.
Fast food drink lids? Do you take him to McDonald's with you? Also, do you tell him to bring you these things or does he just pick stuff up and bring it to you?
This is so hard to hear. I had to crank up the volume just to hear the voices (barely), then the end credits BLASTED out! Can you level out the volume please. (love the show, just want to hear it clearly)
I have two pigeons and we have wild ones in the back yard, and they're really awesome birds. They really are quite pretty, and I just love their little coo.
The volume on mic was probably low, and the fact he is far from talking in to it and the fact that his leaning forward so the mic isn't picking up vibration from his chest.
The audio has been bad for a couple of talk show episodes. This one is so off that if I put it at a sane volume, I pretty much have to make sure everything else is muted, because even a system beep would be alarmingly loud now.
Informative and engaging as usual. Thanks to Hank and his guests for their continuing support of education and the pursuit of knowledge. I love everything SciShow has to offer, hopefully someday soon I can translate that love into a subbable donation, but for now I'll just say "thanks, Hank"
It's really hard to hear Hank in this video. Perhaps the microphone would be more effective on the side of your shirt where you are facing most of the time...
I think it's just all over the place, sound-wise; a lot of the stuff is really quiet, but then other things (like the pigeon hitting the mic with its wings and the intro/outro) are really loud, so you can't just turn the volume up and stick with it. :( I think they really need a sound editor for something like this.
Hank, mic tips.Don't place the mic so far down on your shirt, don't place it too far underneath the collar or lapel of your shirt, and place it on the side you're most likely to be facing while talking. These are the biggest reasons we can't hear you well in this episode. The mic placement here works well in your regular videos, but in this video, the position of the mic + the position of your head is blocking the sound. Another good thing to do would be to test the levels before you film, so that you don't end up with footage with bad audio. These are just my tips from my experience using these kinds of mics (granted, not necessarily for filming videos, but for stage.)
Not a fan of the hard core owl guy, but that pigeon was so great, and I love Jessi's segment...though, that might be because it's quite awkward to try and hear Hank.
neriumsuitedher It's hard to have insight on the content when you can't hear it :( Oh, and to be clear, I am using headphones that have been sufficient for other low-audio Sci-Show eps. Still not sufficient to boost the audio on this one without causing damage to my ears from other sounds on the computer. It's cool, I'll just enjoy other episodes.
I have also been finding it very hard to hear some of the Sci Show talk shows. I love Jessi so much. I think my favorite part is when she is talking to Denver and the pigeon is going bonkers, and she is just completely calm and comfortable. Almost like a mother carrying on a conversation while her child run amok around her. :)
Huge fan of Scishow, very interesting episodes and thanks so much for preparing these for us, Just a small issue with this episode was that the sound was too low. Is it possible you fix it? It is very hard to understand. Thanks.
extremely low volume level on this one... what's up with that? (I think Hank's mic is off). Audio team - can you guys fix this? (TH-cam and system volume are at max and I can barely hear Hank). I wanna hear about the owls and pigeons! D=
With everything up to maximum, I can't hear anything. Please, guys, sort out your sound! Edit: That's an exaggeration, btw. It's just very quiet no matter what, and if I get an IM or something on steam, the whole neighborhood will know about it.
John Fleshman Not for the average computer speakers. I have to put my surround sound headphones on and jack it up all the way to hear them at normal volume. That's not good.
You thought the audio was quiet on this one wait to you get an ear full of the next video. Wow!! 3:45 AM living in close quarters and turned this one up to hear then the next one caused my neighbors lights to come on...Thanks Hank's sound man.
I would love to see more variety of guests like inventors, engineers and other researchers from Tech, Physics, and chemical fields. anyone looking to make their research public and looking for more funding. Love the show
John Fleshman en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burrowing_Owl en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elf_Owl en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Pygmy-owl en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flammulated_Owl I think I narrowed it down to these guys. Devansh Singh I think I have seen Burrowing Owls more and maybe a Pigmy Owl once or twice. the others don't seem very familiar. But the main ones I spot around here are definitely Great Horned Owls by probably three to one.
SciShow Love the show! Really informative and the topics are always interesting. The only thing that bugs me a bit is that the sound seems a bit off at times. For this episode I had to turn the volume up a fair bit to properly hear what Hank said.
Oh my goodness. Just about every episode in this playlist has volume issues. I'm trying to watch the playlist at work and I have to constantly adjust the volume, sometimes from presenter to presenter within the same presentation. Can you please adjust the volume levels for every speaker before uploading videos? Thank you!
Animal girl is so cute (too bad she's taken too!) if Hank weren't such a stand up guy I bet his wife would be jealous every time she came on. I don't usually watch the talk shows but I clicked because the video screenshot preview was hilarious.
There can be only one reason why hank still has her on......, and like Hank said at the beginning it was "hard core" sitting through all that until the stuiped pidgin came in and jumped on the "snooze fest grenade"....God hank., your a lucky man tappin that.
Hey can you answer this question. So if a planet 4 million light years away or something would see the age of the dinosaurs if a they could see earth right, so if you start from earth and go back that distance away from earth would you see earth back in time or would you see the present day. I was wondering because if you see the present day earth from that for following the steps of the question. How would it work because at the same distance you would see to different images and that just confuses me. I hope you can answer this and it wasn't to confusing.
Can you explain what they do with animal research and why it's important? How does it help people and how does it help the animals? Any unexpected outcomes that came from this kind of research? Thanks I'd love to know.
Is it safe for many birds to drinking from the same bowl: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ As it is summer, and quite hot in Inida, I keep a big bowl of water on my roof daily to help birds and animals survive. I'm wondering if it's safe for them? Please read details below and advise... It's a 2-3 feet diameter wide bowl, and could contain about 2 liters of water. Looks like eagles, pigeons, crows, squirrels, occasionally monkeys and cats drink out of it during days. Bats and owls might drink in night. I fill the bowl daily morning before going to office, and refill it in night before going to sleep and leave it overnight. Next day morning I clean the bowl and fill it again. Is it safe for all these animals and birds to drink out of the same bowl? Could any of them catch any bacteria/virus dangerous to them residing in other species' mouth? (Apparently they do drink out of same pools of water in nature, but those might be larger pools and many other factors involved in nature. I don't know what might be the effect in case of a small bowl) I do want to help, but do not want to ignorantly cause any harm. Kindly advise.
Great question! I'm not an expert, but I did a quick search and found this article from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology: www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/notes/BirdNote09_ProvideWater.pdf If you don't want to click the link directly, you can google "safe water for birds" and click on the second link. I think that article may be of help.
That's very good of you for providing water for birds, especially during the summer. From my knowledge, it is possible for birds to spread diseases to each other, especially viruses. But that's more of a concern only if there's an epidemic affecting birds in the area. Otherwise, their immune systems should take care of any risk of infection. The fact that you clean the bowl daily should reduce the risk even more. And the benefit of providing water for the birds far outweigh any potential risk of spreading diseases.
Owls are wonderful to observe, but are not pets. If you have one be prepared to dedicate much of your time to caring for it. Have taken care of baby barn owls once, had to get used to the smell and used gloves to move them when necessary. Had to sleep during the day and stay up at night to feed them. It was a great experience, learned a lot from it.
I'm guessing the pigeon messed up the audio levels. I normally use 24% volume. Had to turn it up to 100% to hear dialogue. When the pigeon flapped around, my subwoofer went crazy. xP (i.e. the pigeon flap was the full 100% volume, making everything else much lower in volume than it should be)
The pigeon is pretty, and that girl is obviously very stoked about it, but I could have brought you a real owl or two down from Montana Wild Wings in Kalispell for this episode! Thanks for having Mr. Holt, always love to hear his toots and hoots!
Oh man, I had to put in my headphones for this one and when the theme song came on at the end I realized I've barely been hearing it at all this entire time! It has a bass line, guys!
I've noticed in a lot of SciShow TalkShow episodes I have a hard time hearing you guys even with youtube and my computer's sound at max. Then the end music always blasts my ears.
Love you promoting pigeons on your show. Pigeons are great pets google them and you will find many breeds from around the world. They are completely vegetarian and clean (for a bird) when kept correctly. Negative " common knowledge " about them are myths. Great hobby for anyone.
So, are there feral pigeons? I see a lot of them in my city at times. I hear their soft melodious "coos". They don't belong to anyone, just the wilds of the city.
Oh yea there are ferrel birds . Are they the original rock dove ? The breeds of pigeons will revert to the original type ( rock dove) if allowed to breed indiscriminately . I think most " wild" birds are domestic birds that escaped or couldn't find their way home from a race or got lost or spooked from a loft. Most will after a few generations look like the wild type due to that gene configuration bing the most dominant. Blue check orange eye no frills or muffs or crests. You will get recessed genes expressing themselves ,white flights, or color variations but would guess most odd colors are recently lost birds. I have had birds ten to thirteen years old in my coop I doubt that kind of life expectancy in the wild . Wild birds that do the best would depend on humans feeding them or bird feeders .
Now that you make the point about the pigs I would think all domesticated animals would revert back to wild type without selective breeding by us. If you believe in one ,I guess gods plan is unchangeable by us mortals ,we think we are having such a profound effect then nature repairs and replaces itself with its own original plan.
Hank, how about doing a slow automatic gain on your speech audio (5 seconds?), and then a 2 or 3:1 compression on it? This would make listening a lot more easier. BTW great show as ever!
In Poland farmers breed pigeons for races. They release their pigeons at distant places, then they go back home where they sit with their friends on the barn roof drinking beer while waiting for the pigeons to return. It's basically an excuse to take a break of their wife as much as fishing and hunting.
The volume is VERY low!
my volume was cranked up to around 90% and normally it is around 10%
Yeah good information, but the audio kept fading in and out. Hanks Mic was especially bad. The loudest thing by far was when Cornelius would freak out and hit the mic with his wings.

Yeah, guess they missed the mic check or it slipped down?
Hank u need to reposition your mic
Yeah, or sit back like the other guy and talk down into your own shirt. The volume difference between voices is pretty huge.
*****
+1 from me. It's a real problem.
***** With the fan on in my office and a pretty good set of headphones on, I am struggling to understand it all, so it's really bad.
my pet dove is a great delivery bird, he will bring me things like paper clips, Hot Pocket wrappers, and fast food drink lids.
Quite the environmentalist. Must be telling us humans to pick up after ourselves.
Fast food drink lids? Do you take him to McDonald's with you?
Also, do you tell him to bring you these things or does he just pick stuff up and bring it to you?
"Valiant, ...fetch my Hot Pocket wrapper ! "
Ryan Harding he just "likes" certain objects and brings them, but if I throw one of these objects somewhere, he will fetch it.
could you train him to fetch certain things? like.. ehm.. bottle caps, diamonds or guitar strings?
The eastern screech owl call was excellent, and the saw whet owl call was good, too.
how did they taste like? :D
nevermind, but yeah, very good impressions
Damonack Like owls.
this video is a great test of reaction time and volume adjustment speed.
my ears didn't know what hit them!!
This is so hard to hear. I had to crank up the volume just to hear the voices (barely), then the end credits BLASTED out! Can you level out the volume please.
(love the show, just want to hear it clearly)
I think something went wrong with Hanks mic so his sound is heard through other mics.
You guys really need to reupload this with fixed audio
So hard to hear this episode....
For having only one larynx his impressions of owls was most impressive
Whoa, just looked up "syrinx" thanks to your comment. That's wild. I never thought about how birds produce sound before.
I'm glad to have helped!
Oh, good, so I'm not the only one who thinks this video is quiet.
I have two pigeons and we have wild ones in the back yard, and they're really awesome birds. They really are quite pretty, and I just love their little coo.
Mr. Holt doesn't seem too happy to be there :(
Yeah, it seems like it. He seems very uninterested after Jessi comes in.
He was hoping for owls, maybe?
This seems really quiet? :/
I think it's just Hank is wearing his mic as close as usual
Yeah, they are really hard to understand at times. Could you make these videos louder?
The volume on mic was probably low, and the fact he is far from talking in to it and the fact that his leaning forward so the mic isn't picking up vibration from his chest.
The audio has been bad for a couple of talk show episodes. This one is so off that if I put it at a sane volume, I pretty much have to make sure everything else is muted, because even a system beep would be alarmingly loud now.
delusionnnnn Good, I didn't think of that. I just couldn't watch it.

It's really hard to hear Hank in this video.

Blimey this episode is quiet. Really interesting though, I love ornithology!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that. I was worried my headphones were out of charge.
I think it's just all over the place, sound-wise; a lot of the stuff is really quiet, but then other things (like the pigeon hitting the mic with its wings and the intro/outro) are really loud, so you can't just turn the volume up and stick with it. :( I think they really need a sound editor for something like this.
Kagedtiger Definitely ^
Hank had his mic way too low.
Nate Wynd That and the levels needed adjusting.
Aww Jessi is so enthusiastic and fun!
What a quiet, brilliant unasuming man. That guys so chill, he just loves owls and thats it.
The audio was very quiet.
Hank, mic tips.Don't place the mic so far down on your shirt, don't place it too far underneath the collar or lapel of your shirt, and place it on the side you're most likely to be facing while talking. Someone forgot to do a sound check before filming. Hank and Denver's audio levels are extremely off.
Yeah, I guess when Hank is talking he turns his head toward Denver, a bit away from the mic ^^
or his mic was completely off... :/
15:14 RIP Headphone users alone at night time
Not a fan of the hard core owl guy, but that pigeon was so great, and I love Jessi's segment...though, that might be because it's quite awkward to try and hear Hank.
Awesome in so many ways, especially i. Holt's owl calling ability, ii. Holt's polite but informed disinterest in the non-owl bird, lol.
WOW! Denver is soooooooooo good at owl calls! Those sounded like the real deal!!!!
volume very low
Both my parents had these birds as pets when they where kids! My Dad had a Pigeon and my mom had a great white owl. Thanks for this episode!
Using headphones helped me. C'mon, people, say something nice about the show. I personally thought that his owl sounds were freaking awesome.
Yeah, but it's sad if all of the comments' section is but complaints about sound quality, rather than insights on the content.
neriumsuitedher
It's hard to have insight on the content when you can't hear it :(

audio check one, two...one, two. I had to bust out the head phones to hear you Hank, my laptop speakers just are not loud enough.
Did anyone hear something that seems someone's heartbeats between 7:14 and 8:43?
Try to listen with headphones and crank the volumes up.
extremely low volume level on this one... what's up with that? (I think Hank's mic is off). Audio team - can you guys fix this? (TH-cam and system volume are at max and I can barely hear Hank).
I wanna hear about the owls and pigeons! D=
Why can I not hear any of their voices, but I can hear someone's heart beating?! wtf
or you can use Dynamics Processing effect to produce consistent volume levels, if you are using adobe audition
With everything up to maximum, I can't hear anything. Please, guys, sort out your sound!
Edit: That's an exaggeration, btw. It's just very quiet no matter what, and if I get an IM or something on steam, the whole neighborhood will know about it.
Everything fine here, sort out your sound!
Yeah it's working fine for me too.
John Fleshman Not for the average computer speakers. I have to put my surround sound headphones on and jack it up all the way to hear them at normal volume. That's not good.

I have regular little Altec Lansing pc speakers and they are playing the video at the same volume as every video I have watched today...

My speakers are excellent and I have no problems with any other videos.
On the technical side the SciShow TalkShow is getting quieter and quieter... the only show on YT I listen on max volume and still loose some parts.
You thought the audio was quiet on this one wait to you get an ear full of the next video. Wow!! 3:45 AM living in close quarters and turned this one up to hear then the next one caused my neighbors lights to come on...Thanks Hank's sound man.
Best show! Love everything on SciShow, Crashcourse, Vlogbrothers and everything!!!!
Is it my speakers or was the sound bad?
His owl whistles gave me chills....
I would love to see more variety of guests like inventors, engineers and other researchers from Tech, Physics, and chemical fields. anyone looking to make their research public and looking for more funding. Love the show
These are the most awkward talk segments!!! I LOVE It.
can you turn up the audio gain a little bit more?
I live in an area with great horned owls and a smaller type of owl I do not recognize. they are very cool birds indeed.

did Hanks mic die?
I very much like his sweater. Very forest-y colours.
SciShow Love the show! Really informative and the topics are always interesting. The only thing that bugs me a bit is that the sound seems a bit off at times. For this episode I had to turn the volume up a fair bit to properly hear what Hank said.
Denver Holt is so funny - feigning admiration for the owl-food.
I know, right! LOL!
"Would you like to pet her?"
It's hard to hear everyone. Like the audio is lower in the video for some reason.
is that a heartbeat I can hear? at 7:30 i think its easiest to hear...
Wow... Look at how the owl guy stares at the pigeon at 8:00 I bet he's thinking how many different ways an owl can rip that pigeon apart xD
this man's owl calls are amazing
Why do we have head achs. I have one right now and i just am wondering what causes them.
Wow when he made the owl sounds, mind=blown :-D

Was the sound screwed up for anyone else?
I want to work with owls this summer! This looks so awesome! Need to find myself a field assistant position!!!!!
Whoo wass heartbeating that? Was it Hank? Wass it foxy Jessi?? Was it... pigeon???
This entry is quiet compared to the others, did you change up the audio?
why don't we use ravens to send messages?
Dark Wings, Dark Words
AllanFrankland or do you mean "Twitter" (caw-caw)
they fell out of fashion after the invention of the auto targeting gattling gun

Don't forget Snow. :)
I tried once, but no matter what message you told it, in the end the raven would just say "Nevermore"... Maddening!

I was waiting for a discussion about Harry Potter, and you didn't disappoint.
I had a great horned owl live in my tree for several years. it had babies.
I have a pet Barbary Dove. She is a lot like Cornelius. She has very soft plumage and likes to eat seeds out of hands.
You have to turn the audio up on your mic so we can hear the questions asked
That pigeon ought to be SO glad it can't understand what they're saying...

Ainkara I guess because there are so many of them in the cities and the poop everywhere.

I would appreciate it if you guys could turn the volume of the up. I do not have headphones and could not hear much with my laptop's speakers on full.
can you please answer this how come sometimes when you get a cut and you don't know about it, it doesn't hurt until you see it??????

You will get recessed genes expressing themselves ,white flights, or color variations but would guess most odd colors are recently lost birds. I have had birds ten to thirteen years old in my coop I doubt that kind of life expectancy in the wild . Wild birds that do the best would depend on humans feeding them or bird feeders .
680ecks The same thing happens with pigs. After only a few generations, they can revert back to wild boars.
Way to make the guy feel super old.
"...Hard core, Old school science"
"So you've been studying owls for about as long as I've been alive"
the only issue it have with the audio is a constant and rhythmic sound in the background, i have heard it in other talk show episodes as well
I wanna know why the pigeons sound in that specific way when they flap thier wings. Does anyone know why?
Why is no one reacting to that amazing owl sound out of Denver Holt's mouth? Kept waiting for Hank to share my reaction
In Poland farmers breed pigeons for races. They release their pigeons at distant places, then they go back home where they sit with their friends on the barn roof drinking beer while waiting for the pigeons to return. It's basically an excuse to take a break of their wife as much as fishing and hunting.
Amazing owl call!
