Great discussion as this is something that I recently started playing with this year. Do not sleep on the drop shot rig with unweighted flies. I've had a few instances where I have fished through a section with the common beaded nymph rig ( heavy fly on bottom with a dropper tag 20" above & smaller fly) with zero bites. Made the change to unweighted drop shot and was immediately into fish. I think the flies move differently without weight and the drop shot rig sort of "pulses" the flies on this setup. Plus the bottom fly is at the perfect depth when fish are suspended off the bottom. As Gordon mentioned, fish don't feed down. This video needs more attention from others. Please do more of these! Thank you!

Proud of these 2!! I watched the entire video and have zero clue about fly fishing...but enjoyed the witty conversation!

Great Video! I heard you ask Gordon if he would ever fish a heavier fly on his dropper? What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of this on a euro rig system? Thanks, Brian

@@btbo3220 If fish are holding in the bottom layer of the water column and eating small bugs or if you are wanting to fish two flies in skinny water it can be a benefit as the heavier tag fly can get the smaller fly down on a similar plane. However you run the risk of creating slack between them and some disconnect which can mean missed takes due to lack of strike detection. It is also more prone to tangle.

I 100% agree. Sometimes we like putting slack on flies so they hold on to it longer, so that's an advantage. Other times when they're grabbing and spitting it out quick it's a disadvantage, so you have to weigh your options..

Guys, a drop shot rig with two flies is a deadly combination anywhere you fish. Drop-shotting allows you to go light on your flies and then get those flies in the stick zone much quicker for a longer period. Fishing with a bottom weight (lead) for saltwater and freshwater fish has been going on since ancient times. It's nothing new. The only reason it is not used in competition fly fishing is because the rules don't allow it. In EURO nymph fishing the bottom fly is always sacrificed as a heavily weighted nymph so the top fly or flies gets down in the strike zone. The bottom fly has the weight and the top flies catch the fish.
