Olga, this is truly the the best description and demonstration of how to hold the cello. My granddaughter and I are learning the cello together. Our instructor was vague on this point.Thank you.
I just fall in love with you right now. You have shown me that I have been holding my cello incorrectly since I started to have interest about it. I am middle aged, so my learning is very slow. Thank you for these tutorials.
my grand daughter is 11 years old is learning how to play the cello in school and she loves it . she will be having a school play soon i really like you video thank you .
Very clear and concise lesson. Thank you, as a private string and piano teacher, I just got my first cello student, but I'm a double bassist, and there are differences (I use a stool) in the exact means of holding, however I will experiment with some of the advise you gave for cello to my own double bass studies.
I wonder if you could help me, I am trying to find a position that I can play in comfortably without effecting a neck condition I have. I studied cello when I was 19 at Leeds College of Music but unfortunately I had to stop playing, I have desperately wanted to play again and my beautiful fiancé bought me a cello for my birthday so here is my chance. I have tried the position you have suggested but I am finding the tuning peg is digging into my neck... any suggestions
What would I need to get lesson from a cello teacher on line? Is it just using the camera from computer? What if u don’t have a good camera. What camera to get? I’ve always taken lesson in person but it seems that more and more teachers are using online!!
I not sure is it my posture wrong, but whenever i play my cello, the cello will start slipped down, and i need to readjust my cello again. And also i not sure is it i squeeze my cello too much, whenever i play it with short, my thigh will have the mark where i "squeeze" my cello, especially my left leg.. Please help!
th-cam.com/video/xruaCxBf95o/w-d-xo.html The above link I just copied from lesson 3. I had the same problem, l had to go to her channel via where my subscribed list is and looked through all her videos. 🙂
This position doesn't work for me- I have large breasts, and I can't even see the strings of the instrument if I put the shoulder of the cello at sternum height, or straight down the center of my body...blargie. Any advice?
There are really no rules about holding the cello. You would need to "hug" the cello in a manner that allows you to play well. I tilt the cello to the right, it is never straight. As I play, I feel free to move around and tilt the cello to the left when there are lots of passages on the lower strings. I also make sure the chair I sit on is not flat. But if it is, I place a pillow in such a way so that I sit on an incline ( I hope this makes sense). I think you would need to figure out your way of holding/playing the cello given your body shape, by changing your chair height, inclination, and how long the spike is, and how to tilt the cello. But the cello's position is not static as you play, so start with what's comfortable and as you reach for higher positions see what adjustments you need to make to the position of the cello.
I play cello and my brother plays violin and he wants to learn to play cello, so I'm showing him these videos to help him. Olga thanks for all you do.

The endpin is adjusted according to the chair height
Thank you
What about the chair? Does it have to be a certain height?
For playing cello, it s very intersting to use a piano chair . 😊

When i play is it ok for my knuckle on my left hand (first finger) to touch the side of the fingerboard or should it be up? When I'm in first position

Was hoping for a body-appropriate assistance. I'll just figure it out
