  • Here we cover a shot that most players below regular 100 break standard really struggle with.
    A very gratifying shot to play as the professionals do, we break the shot down into the 4 simple skill layers you need to play it well:
    1. -4 screw shot speed
    2. -3 stun screw shot speed
    3. Aiming compensation with side spin
    4. How to generate the correct amount of side spin

    I wish I could do this shot at 5:38!
    But on behalf of all the amateur snooker players around the world I want to say thank you Mr. Barrow for helping us. I contacted you three years ago and now I still get your emails and christmas gifts. That impresses me much! Thank you very much, you good man!

    Hi Nic, the room's looking good since I was there in September 2012.
    The training ball & practice routine is very helpful.
    All the best for 2015...

      Thanks Trevor
      I also need to thank you immeasurably for helping me finally get comfortable in how to place the balls back in their case!
      My sequencing previously was clearly all wrong!
      PS, my client from Germany last week got me thinking about ANOTHER area where my sequencing was wrong.
      I used to have a shower and THEN a shave...
      BUT he got me thinking that i need to reverse that... this gives less sense of rushing AFTER the shower, cleans 100% all stubble, AND means that the mirror is not frosted/ steamed up - meaning that my girlfriend's endless hints about cutting myself shaving are at an end!

    Great tutorials, can we see more ones with the cut out? As it gives a very good indication on where to be hitting the cue ball for certain shots.

    But Nic, how do you know how much to compensate? I assume the deflection depends on the cue you're using.
    Any drills or exercises to help you learn this?
    Worst thing is, if I'm not mistaking, it also depends on the speed of the shot and the distance to the object ball. Which makes things very difficult to estimate.
    Snooker is a very hard game... :(

      Dragos Puri Delivering the cue 100% straight to reduce the variables, and delivering from the same cue ball spot at the same height with the same side and speed, test ten to twenty different aimings until you deliver straight and miss the black to left and right side of pockets. then you will learn it for yourself!

    • @colincolenso
      @colincolenso 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dragos Puri If you watch Judd Trump play this shot, he utilizes Back Hand English. He aims through center cue ball, as if to pot without side, aiming at the left edge of the pocket, as the sidespin will turn the black into center pocket. Then he pivots to apply side during the stroke. If the bridge is at the cue's pivot point length, this method works for any amount of side, from 1/4 tip to 1 full tip offset.

    • @TheSnookerGym
      @TheSnookerGym  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Colin Colenso This is wrong Dragos. For any given combination of distance to cb/speed of shot/amount of side THERE IS ONLY ONE POSSIBLE LINE OF AIM. So, assuming they start on the line of aim and keep the bridge hand still on impact, then for the pivot to work they have to either be on the correct line for that unique combination, or start with the cue off the line to start with, or move the bridge hand on delivery.

    • @colincolenso
      @colincolenso 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      nicbarrow You haven't heard of Back Hand English then Nic? It does work, though not much known about in snooker circles, though some pros have learned to use it intuitively. The pivot takes the cue to the exact same line as you would get to using your experience. Seach youtube for some videos on it, including one of my own. I'll see if I can find a link to Judd doing it... though I doubt he's even heard of Back Hand English.

      Colin Colenso It does not work - and it is one of the most damaging myths in pool circles! Thank goodness it has not found its way into snooker yet - as I would be earning a lot helping players to unlearn this theory. Give me ANY pot and tell me how much english to pivot to and the speed - and I could miss ANY shot as long as I can choose the distance. Equally if you choose any of the other two parameters I could miss any shot by changing the third. Pool players think it works because the pockets are so big they pot the ball IN SPITE of using the theory and not because of it. A number of snooker pros do use side like that - although in reality they are starting my aiming with slight side and then delivering with more. I find that is a more difficult way to learn side than straight delivery on every shot and simply compensate 100% for the throw off which means you have a more consistent action and can only miss due to wrong compensation and not due to wrong cueing also.

    Thank you! This shot is the magical shot on tv to me ;-) When I try this shot, I still don't know exactly where to aim, because of the offset. Can you film this shot again from the player's point of view? So I can see how much offset you have to correct.

    I'm confused about the compensation of adressing the cueball. Do you decide on line of sight before or after? How do do you assess from -3 or -4? on your aligntment and or contact. Can you explain how much allowance is to be made for 'throw off' for 1 or 2 ? I cant get it. Sorry.

      +Duncan Worth Hi Duncan, That is all answered in the video bonus material included with the Ultimate Training Ball. www.thesnookergym.com/ultimate-training-ball/ There are a few very simple routines you can apply to learn this quite quickly depending on your cueing skills. If you have had an 80 break or higher you can learn it very quickly. Lower than that, and you will need to spend attention on a more consistent delivery and worry about side spin a bit later

  • @RaferJeffersonIII
    @RaferJeffersonIII 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nic - I struggle to understand - you can play -3 hard, or - 4 softer. I understand with rev side you can't play -4, but in a straight line, you can play either power with -3 or softer with -4. Over distance, you need power as the screw will be lost. Is the general rule play -4 softer when you can, or is deep screw more difficult - I hope you understand what I'm getting at!

    Hi Nic. Great Video, I have learned a lot from watching them.I have a question, as a pool player when I screw back I try and keep my hand as flat as I can to keep the cue as level as possible to get the screw back I need which works for pool, as soon as I apply this to snooker it doesn't work. Do I need to raise to hand slightly.

    • @TheSnookerGym
      @TheSnookerGym  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jonathan Hawkins it will work if you address the cue ball at -4, deliver the cue flat, and if upon delivery the cue shaft does not drop and strike the cushion rail

    • @jonathanhawkins91
      @jonathanhawkins91 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +nicbarrow Thank you Nic. I will give this a go tonight when I have a few frames practice. One last question if it's OK to ask is Should I still get a lot of screw back with a 9.5mm tip?

    • @TheSnookerGym
      @TheSnookerGym  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      9.5 is ok and not too small that centre cue ball finding is an issue

    • @jonathanhawkins91
      @jonathanhawkins91 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TheSnookerGym I find it more tough when trying to screw back when object ball is the other end of the table, i tend to want to throw my arm at the shot rather than keep it nice and smooth through impact

    I've Seen and learned a lot from your coaching videos
    i never ever learned one shot..
    If u Remember the shot from Sir Alex Hurricane Higgins Against Dennis Taylor And Steve Davis
    The one in which he pots black by hitting the side cushion. and black travels along the 3 cushions and the pots in Pocket along the black's spot

      I've been watching quite a few of these videos recently and it's amazing how many commenters feel the need to criticise his methods or personality, very harshly for that matter. Personally I find it quite perplexing. For anyone who has ever been coached in a sport or when learning a musical instrument etc, Nic's teaching method seems pretty damn normal if you ask me. Your coach is not your friend (although they could be). Their job is to make you face your weaknesses and correct them. That can be a slightly painful experience, because undoing poorly acquired knowledge takes effort, humbleness and malleability.
