  • Thank you to Janie a subbie who is my inspiration for this video. This is her story, and thankfully she got her money back.
I also share with you a story from myself, something that happened at the gym a few weeks back.
Plus of course, my tips on how best to keep safe when buying pre-loved online.

I'm a professional long time seller on Poshmark. My main piece of advice for purchasing online is to avoid any seller who tries to get you to text/email them to take the transaction offline. This is an extremely common scam that happens not only on Poshmark, but most platforms. They convince you to text them whether it's because they can give you a better deal or so they can send you a picture of a date code from a bag. This is a huge red flag because they should have no issue posting a photo of the date code in their listings. I've seen people get scammed out of thousands of dollars because these scammers convince them to purchase using paypal or venmo without the added protection. Most of the scammers steal their photos from reliable sellers from other platforms.
I also would stick by that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Sellers selling brand new luxury bags at a fraction of the retail price is huge red flag.

As I’ve posted in the main comment - u can also check the image’s metadata.
Every image, that you’ve taken or downloaded has a date/time stamp. Ask seller for additional images then u can check when image was taken.
I’d also ask seller to write today’s date on their hand besides the bag. If they won’t, red flag 🚩

This story is another example why we should buy a design item ( new, preloved or vintage) directly / physically at the store . I remember you mensioned once that luxurious purchases ( bought on well known -online boutiques ) were stolen by shipping/ delivery services and people received empty parcels . Thanks for sharing and greetings from Paris .

Luxury is just that… luxury. Save up and buy the real deal. Avoid all this unnecessary stress. Brands do price increases so the items can retain its value over time. If it’s discounted you’re buying an overly used/ damaged or nonexistent item.

I bought a YSL bag from an experienced seller on eBay, but the experience was not in handbags. I thought maybe I was getting a good deal because the seller didn’t know what he had (it was listed as a different design). What I received was a fake. Fortunately ebay refunded me (I returned the item to the seller), but I was distressed to see the seller reposting the exact same bag again a few weeks later.

The scammers use random tracking numbers for completely different parcels and send that to the customer so they'll continue thinking the transaction is legit. Some customers who've bought from scammers find that as soon as they click on the tracking link the item has already been delivered in another part of the country.

I had once ordered from Tiffany what was supposed to be a birthday present. The package arrived torn open but thankfully the Tiffany boxes hadn't been tampered with. I assume someone at FedEx thought there was a smartphone in it and didn't care for the little teal boxes which was my luck. I complained to Tiffany's because they charged me 15€ for shipping and they refunded that amount, no questions asked, but yes: can't trust shipping service providers! That was hella scary.

    • @wumingkkk
      @wumingkkk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I had a DHL parcel tampered with but I checked further and found that it was the custom that cut open and re-seal the box with normal tape. The reason was that it was an expensive vintage watch and they had to make sure that the item is not related to fraud cases or for laundering etc.

Great video Sophie ☺️. It’s so sad that there are so many scammers out there. A common scam buyers use is firstly they ask to deal with the transaction directly through email/text, and then they say they’re abroad so will arrange for a courier to pick up the item. I’m not exactly sure how the scam works, but this happened to me twice (thankfully I realised at the start so didn’t lose out) and others talk about this scam online too. OMG the chocolate story was unbelievable!
I bought a Dior necklace on ebay and the postman put a ripped envelope through my letterbox. I ran down my whole road to chase after the postman in my PJ's!! The postman said all I could do was try to claim for it or call royal mail ..honestly not v helpful. The seller tried to say I was lying but the fact they had sent the necklace unwrapped in a regular envelope with no tape or anything to seal it was crazy! The necklace would have been visible or 'feel-able' through the envelope so regardless the packaging wasn't adequate! My thoughts are that someone in royal mail opened the parcel and took the necklace but i never found out what happened. Paypal reimbursed my money luckily and the seller had to take things up with royal mail. I'm not sure what the outcome was but it was a horrible process to go through and could potentially have been avoided by using a secure packing method and insuring contents. Honestly too scared to buy designer things of high value on ebay after that!! Just so relieved I got my money back though!! X

Hi Sophie. Great topic! Your advice on using the credit card for these types of purchases is on point. American Express ALWAYS back you up. My husband and I have found that they resolve our issues very quickly. The other good thing about them is that they would credit your account back for the purchase amount charged on your AMEX credit card while they do the investigation.

I have been lucky with ebay purchases. I am now thinking no more ebay. When I go into a boutique to look at something I always follow basic manners rules. I only go when they are not busy (never go near a boutique on Sunday afternoon in my city), I tell them that I am not planning to buy today so they know there won't be a commission. And I am quick about it. I don't dither and have them show me a dozen different items. That way we can look at an authentic items and yet not be wasting the salesperson's time.

I made the awful mistake of using DPD local and send it next day delivery and it never reached there. Apparently it was lost at the depot but I know that the bastard driver probably stole it and didnt log it in. Worse thing was it was marked as ON THE WAY for days. I cried so much trying to explain to my ex friend who thought I was lying what had happened. He didn't believe me and thought I had scammed him and I bugged DPD for ages and they never did anything or paid compensation. I ended up losing a friend over it. Hated DPD local ever since then

I bought a vintage Delvaux tempete lately in black medium size for the price of a puffer jacket, the only thing wrong was the the top handle was thrown of the bag a little and I knew Delvaux would fix that. I bought it and everything looked op just that the logo was on the front of the bag. Keep in mind I've bought two other Delvaux bags and im quite good at authenticating them. I wasn't so sure about this one so I went to the Delvaux boutique in brussels and the said its a real but just a very old 60's bag. I was so happy bc I think the repairs will cost me about 600 euro's I hope 🤞. Still in very good condition these vintage bags go for 2k. Postal worker came and went--no earrings. I checked and they still showed out for delivery. About an hour later, my neighbor across the street came knocking on my door. She had my package. She found it in her front yard! All I can figure is it fell out as the postal worker was pulling other mail out of the satchel. However, what was disturbing was the following day, they were marked as delivered. Uh...not really!

They use an old tracking number.
Similar thing happened to SuperDacob. He mentioned it in one of his vids.
💡Tip is to ask for more images, and be specific - eg top corner, under flap - images that can only be taken if bag is with seller.
*Metadata* Apple devices u can check when an image was taken. All your photos have this metadata.
Any downloaded image to your Apple device u can click on the circled i, for Info. You’ll see the date/time an image was taken. Not sure if all devices have this.
Or ask the seller to write today’s date on their hand beside the bag 😉

I have been using Vinted a lot lately and I have noticed that there are lots of brand new accounts with no reviews selling designer items. And when you look into it the same photos are being used on multiple different accounts listing the same item ! Items are being sold really cheaply compared to retail and the quality as well

Well this isn’t a scam story more a poor customer service. I ordered a Michael kors pochette from house of Fraser in January and opened it in March upon my return from uni. They didn’t include a dust bag and I emailed and they refused to help as it had been more than 28 days. I went back and forth yet they still said no. I wrote a bad trust pilot review and long story short they offered me 10% off with free next day delivery but still no dust bag! I know Michael kors do sell their own dust bags but I popped into their store to see if they had any and the lovely SA just gave me one! She was so kind! I wish the bag was in stock in the actual store but I don’t think they sold the style anymore and I really liked it otherwise would have bought direct!

Oh my god, I've been watching quite some videos of you recently and I just stumbled across this one. A similar thing happened to me: I saved my money for more than 2 years to buy my first designer bag and an empty box with 2 filled plastic bottles turned up. I am so devastated because I saved for so long and I'm only 17 years old. Also I'm not able to get my money back... I am so frustrated

I have purchased 3 fake items in a row through eBay but I must admit the platform has been so good at getting my money back each time. I have also bought several genuine items from eBay at great prices. This pushes me to keep trying and the fact that I have been protected makes me feel safe on there. I would insist on having every purchase authenticated and to research the product carefully, otherwise a scam can easily take place!

My sister sent me a package once, it came opened and empty. That was the first and last time we had problems with royal mail, but we never got our money back or other compensation. I‘ve heard horror stories from The Real Real and Vestiaire Collective, The Real Real even authenticated fake stuff as original, there was a scandal in the US, I saw a report on tv about it. I always film the complete packaging process when I sell something expensive and the item from every angle and from the inside. I also put that in my description in the seller profile so people don‘t even try to scam me. I am really hesitant to buy preloved, but when I do, I always buy with buyer protection and I film the unboxing.

Hello Sophie, I work in supply chain management. If you receive a tracking number where the item has arrived before it was even shipped, and the number is from DHL or FEDEX or a similar type of courier service, this is because they recycle their shipping numbers every 3-6 months. This also means that if you don't receive an item or receive a fake item by the stipulated date and the customer service department is not able to help you (because the seller/shipper is at fault), take as many screenshots as you can of the status online, download the tracking details and signatures of whomever received it, take photographs of the package with the tracking numbers on it and etc. In 3-6 months, the tracking information of your item will disappear online and DHL or FEDEX cannot help you trace it anymore.
Your tip about taking photos of the condition of the package upon receipt is a practice we put in place at work to make it easier for claims. Its just smart and helps you if you ever need to claim damages due to mishandling from the courier company. Always take photos of the outside and condition of the item inside the package. Do it even if you don't see any damage outside because you never know what is going on inside. Hope this helps.

The tracking number is so that the customer can’t dispute it. On PayPal (Depop requires you to link your PayPal) they ask for “proof of delivery” if there’s a dispute of item not recieved. So any items that are sent as a letter (in a envelope with stamps) with no tracking, the seller has to refund the customer (even if the customer received it and is just claiming that they didn’t) so basically even if she sent an empty parcel she can provide a tracking number and claim that the item was indeed sent. Sad unfortunately :/ luckily in this case the dates don’t add up so would arise suspicion if she disputed it and she might get her money back!

I feel so bad for the girl with the fake book tote. I guess the best thing would have been if she had seen it in real life but that’s not always possible. I can just imagine when she saw yours, Sophie and then realized hers looked different. Obviously if the price is inexpensive then you know you’re getting a fake/dupe but if the price is still high and just a little under retail you think you’re getting the real thing. This is why I’m scared to buy from anywhere but a boutique.😖

I was duped by a new depop account as well. It was an expensive coach bag and the photos didn’t show any flaws. So I messaged the seller and asked specifically if there were any flaws not pictured and they responded “No it’s in excellent condition.” I received it and the color was completely faded in the leather. The edge coating was cracked on all 4 openings. The corners were very worn to the point that the color was gone. There were stains on the sides and inside the bag. I had to fight it through PayPal and only got a partial refund. Then they had the audacity to leave a negative feedback for ME and called me a liar. I learned my lesson the hard way 😬

I brought a bag charm on Vestiaire, thankfully I paid for verification as the box they recieved was empty, I noticed the item had been stuck for a much longer period in verification so when I complained it was because they received a empty box and they have me a refund (after a few complaints) if I hadn’t had brought the verification I think I would have had a very hard time proving I had recieved a empty box as Vestiaire can be very difficult to deal with xx

The scam is they take out a tracking number & ship some shitty thing to a business within the same postal code. The tracking shows that it’s on its way to your postal code so you think you’re getting a package but it’s going to somewhere else within the same code.

Something thats implemented in some of the fb groups im in, is you MUST post a photo of your name and the date with the item your selling to prove you have the item in your possession, because people would steal photos, sell the non-item and then ghost. Thankfully most people pay with paypal goods and services and they are great at helping you get your money back. I recently bought something (collectors edition book worth minimum 200pounds) for less than half that, paid goods and services (even though they requested friends and family RED FLAG), they immediatley refunded me and tried to convince me to send F&F, when i said no, thats a scammer tactic, they immediately blocked me haha. I knew it would be too good to be true, cause the book was like half the price, but sometimes people don't know what they have and it wasnt a sale group, just a chat group.

I was scammed on eBay with a Chanel jumbo in caviar leather. Seller had excellent feedback and said it would be sent via recorded delivery. The bag never arrived, no tracking number supplied and the seller stopped responding to messages. I opened a ticket with eBay under their money back guarantee and I received a full refund. I’ve since seen the photos reused on other sellers items and I now always report them as soon as I see them.
I’m not put off from purchasing from eBay as I have found some absolute gems on there that I haven’t been able obtain in other places but I always use eBay messages, never communicate via other methods, use a credit card/PayPal and adhere to the old saying “if it looks too good to be true….”

Vestiaire is equally as bad for scams and fakes. And not just sellers, I was dealing with an issue with a buyer who haggled hard for a bag and then didn’t collect the parcel from the nominated collection point (a Tesco Express) when it was delivered, which was holding up the payment. Still waiting to be paid for it. It’s a stressful situation.
