Always keep a lighter or a mini torch on the boat, I prefer Bic lighters myself. There are endless uses for a reliable lighter on a boat or just being outdoors in general. I'm suggesting this for everybody, not just robbie ;). Great video as always!
Hey Eric always have the bic to great to have them around. Just curious what state are you from ? Just always looking to talk to fishermen I learned so much from different people I talk to and fish with it's the sport where you never stop learning.
@@recordfishhunter9234 you can never learn enough about the sport and the outdoors in general! Thanks for the question. But I don't like to tell people on the internet where I live, no offense, let's just say I'm a state away from Wisconsin. But I appreciate the questions. You can always ask me anything else about fishing!
A little Pete Maina summer releasing tip...point your fish down at a 45° angle, because the surface temps and oxygen increase the deeper you get her head. Much easier releases, and fish won't swim on the surface. Think about standing chest deep in water...your feet are colder than your chest. Give it a try when the surface temps are high.
So I am no pro or a biologist or a scientist but, my thinking is that a gill popping in and out the water would introduce more oxygen then trying to hold the head down in deeper water, considering you can only force the head down so low, i fish a Indiana musky lake quite frequently and even in the deepest part of the lake when water temps are 70-80 the surface temp is pretty consistent about 6 foot down, now as far as the oxygen level idk but I think the most important thing is that people are educated on protocol on handling, also things that are going to prolong a fight are probably not best and unless it’s some Godzilla slob doing water pics and a quick water release is not a bad idea if you must fish in hot temps. Bill Murray, could you post a link or article from Pete saying that? I’d like to educate myself on that technique, I think I’ll try that next time, thanks for the tip.
@@Themuskychannel I fish shallow lakes in the Kawarthas, in Ontario. I read it in a magazine a long time ago, & noticed it helped us with quicker releases. Perhaps it's different on deeper water, I wouldn't know. There was something about more oxygen in cooler water, but like you, I'm not a biologist or scientist either. We just noticed that they swam away stonger and quicker using one hand on the tail and the other holding it's head below the surface. I DO remember Maina saying his boat buddy told him the tip, & Pete was just writing an article about it. I also got to mention it to him at one of our Musky shows a few years ago. I'll try to find the Esox Angler mag the article was in.
@@Themuskychannel the gills themselves (not the arches) basically collapse out of water, so having the gill exposed to air would probably result in less oxygen than just keeping the head submerged.
Makes sense, about the gills not having buoyancy out of water and collapsing I can wrap my head around that and yeah idk, I think a good rule of thumb is trying to leave things how you received them, it’s why we hold the fish horizontally instead of vertical, keep things as “natural” as possible (I know that is not the right words to use considering we’re taking fish out of water lol) but ya get the point
been a very slow year but last week we spent a week up in park falls area and landed a 36 and 2 38s, so I do feel better about the rest of the season. I hope some cooler weather comes around in the janesville area so I can get back on the mad chain. Good luck to you rob.
Good job holding on to her. I have a cut up finger that I couldn't control that acted just like that, but wouldn't stop fighting the entire time I had ahold of her. Only 39 1/2 though
Hey I have a question what line are you guys using. I saw on the knot tuturial that it was really thick. Would be interested to use it in the canals of Amsterdam with lots of snags ( bikes) for big pike.
what reel are you using ?also that type of fishing I have never done, because I live in deep south Texas. Where all we have is salt water, and some little fresh water fishing.
Great fish Robbie, that’s awesome! I’m still looking for my first musky of the season, but I’m going out in late September to drown some suckers so hopefully I’ll hook up!
I bought an all black flaptail, it’s had multiple follows but never gotten eaten. Thinking about painting it a brighter color on the bottom atleast, do u think brighter is better with flap tails?
What's with the frothy, grey stuff at the outer edges of her gill plates? Is that normal in all muskies? Having lived in the south, and not ventured north to fish, was introduced to these muscular, toothy fish in Outdoor Life magazine. Kind of a freshwater version of barracuda or kingfish.
Dig your stuff man!! We live in ohio and we musky fish. Got a rig for the fam and i ..(smoker pt160) very similar to yours and setting it up.. Would be awsome to see your rig bro..
NICE FISH . IVE HAD A COUPLE FISH UP BUT NO TAKERS. DEEP WEEDS AND BUCKTAILS WHERE MY FISH CAME FROM. IM A PART TIME MUSKY AMATEUR THOUGH ONCE A WEEK IF IM LUCKY. I GOT ENOUGH STUFF TO BE DANGEROUS LOL !! THE LAST ONE I SEEN WAS 40 OR SO AND 10 INCHES BEHIND MY BUCKTAIL . SO CLOSE. VILAS COUNTY !!
Yeah I’m going to have to agree, I think I would call the one Robbie used a “improved” Palomar knot, just like a “improved trilene knot I prefer a regular trilene knot, the one he used kind of reminds me of a fly fishing knot to add action to a fly, but I’m fairly new to the sport so keeping things simple stupid is a must for myself. Robbie you are a natural Muskie stud I call you king of Medusa's ! Should of wore a glove how many times have you said that bro ! LoL
I love how you always pump yourself up! The grunting 🤣🤣🤟🏻
Good man hanging onto that fish like a champ!
Grandparents have a cottage up in northern Wisconsin and it’s on a musky lake and has so many Muskie and it says it’s common to catch them
Got my first musky this year and it was a 40 inch 15lbs TIGER! this channel really inspires me to get into musky fishing.
Hella Good Work Robbie🤙🤙🤙

Perhaps they swim away quicker at that angle could be due to the fact that is not the natural angle they typically sit? Just an observation

That was a mini medussa?
Sure looked like it, yeah even the mini medussas are relatively large something like 9" 3oz .that's the size I prefer myself
Nice fish, Robbie.
do you use the same color line all the time
Awesome video as always chief thx love the way you do them thx again can’t wait for the next

There we GOOOO!!!
Up here in the superior Wisconsin trying to get my first musky pretty hard without a boat love watching your videos🎣🎣
What a beautiful and angry fish! Nice work.
Nice musky, still looking for my first one.
Nice work 👊🏻🎣thing almost bit your face.
Shaky hands after that one! Can't hide that stoke

Pretty sure that’s a torn gill plate hanging out
I spy a Cisco rod tube in the opening frame 👀 best in the game IMO
I caught one around the same size last sunday wading in a river!
Nice catch Robbie, man she was angry 😠
Hopped right on the video when I saw it come up in notifications
I would of had 10 Palomar knots tied on the time it took you to tie that knot
