This is so great. According to Barry, this song started out with him hearing the chorus line of “how deep is your love, how deep is your love” while they were having dinner. He told them all to get up and immediately go to the studio, where they hammered out the song in a few hours. What’s amazing is that neither he nor his brothers read music and don’t know what the chord progressions are at all. This song has some of the most sophisticated chord changes in all of pop music, and Barry picks them out by ear alone. He really is a genius.
Oh my gosh! That's pure talent really! There was an interview where the interviewer couldn't believe they write songs without using pen. That's rediculous commented the lady interviewer! And this is what the Gibb brothers do. And perhaps no other songwriters/singers do the same. These brothers are really awesome songwriters🤗
That's actually their keyboard player Blue Weaver on the piano. Barry is giving him guidance as to what he's hearing, but it's Blue who's coming up with the sophisticated keyboard voicings. Blue was never credited as a co-writer, which would have actually reflected his input and influence over the final form of the song. Barry's melodic sense and instincts are impeccable though. One of my favourite songs of all time. My marriage song, in fact.
@Evan Hodge Of course you’re right, it’s obvious Barry knows guitar chords. However, he’s not a keyboard player. In fact on the VH1 Storytellers show, they have a keyboard player playing the Fender Rhodes parts for this song, and none of The Bee Gees play any instruments on it. It’s hard to tell from the grainy video footage, but it looks suspiciously like Blue Weaver on keys. Songs are written in many different ways, and while Barry wrote on guitar he also used to sit with Blue on piano for the more ballad-y songs he wanted to write. As keyboard chord voicings are quite different in feel from guitar voicings, you don’t always have to be aware of what every chord is in order to be able to write the song. In fact, it’s often beneficial to the process. Many guitar based songwriters do this. It’s crystal clear from the writing session recordings that Blue Weaver was a substantial part of the song’s creation and, in all fairness, should’ve been given a writing credit on this song. Could he have written it without Barry? 100% absolutely not. The brilliance, inspiration and direction was all Barry’s and it’s truly inspirational, but Blue was definitely part of the creative process. In fact, had Blue decided to take it to court, he would have won his case (with the recording as evidence). He was a long time member of The Bee Gees band and obviously didn’t feel like that was the way to go, which is fair enough and was his choice. If Barry had come in with the chord sheet and melody already written, and just asked Blue to do a piano arrangement of the song, then that would be different, Blue would have no rights to songwriting credit or royalties. But that’s clearly not what happened here. Lastly, I would sadly dispute your estimation that “2 in every 10,000” will earn a living from writing original music. The odds are far, far worse than that I’m afraid, especially in today’s world of streaming rates from the likes of Spotify.

Lol, In the 80’s when they fell out of favor I was in my teenage years and when I heard them I was still secretly in love with the music (You knownhow teenagers can be) years later early 200’s I was out at a club and they played Stayin Alive and to me it blew any of the modern stuff away. Recently in a department store and heard You Should Be Dancing, thinking about how a 40 Plus year old record crushes everything in its path . As far as the Beatles, dare I say their songwriting is right on Par with them.
Today they have phones, tablets, Netflix..... but we had the music... this and How Can You Mend A Breaking 💓 are my favourite Bee Gee songs.. thank you Barry Robin and Maurice
It's wonderful that they recorded their writing sessions. This classic alone. I wish more of my favorite artists had done this. Barry is a genius. This was truly a great era for popular music.
I’ve always loved hearing in interviews how they came up with their songs and getting to listen to this is an absolute treat. They were some of the very best songwriters and my favourite band! I’m so grateful to have been on this planet at the same time as the Bee Gees.
Amazing to hear them keep going over the chorus, looking for that last chord but not finding it (in the end it would become a minor 7th chord on the sub-dominant ........ the vocalist keeps singing the minor third of that chord but the pianinst hasn't picked up on it yet) ........ we're hearing magic happen in real time!
@@johnobrien1528 True. He was ridiculously handsome and that is a huge advantage in almost any line of work but especially in the entertainment world. At the beginning of their career Robin was a better singer, an equally talented songwriter but almost painfully homely. I don't think either of the twins knew they were only back up singers at the outset but they sure got the message before too long. As I say though, I don't for a minute dispute that Barry was a very good singer just not quite as good as Robin who was phenomenal and to my ears one of the very best of his generation.
beeharbour II Barry, Mo, and Andy have all stated that Rob had the best voice. As far as backup, no, Rob was no ones backup singer. Rob was a very good songwriter. He’s proven this.
Yes, even when discussing greatest songwriters hes not in the list even though he co holds the record with macca and lennon with the most number of no 1s
What a magical moment, Barry and Blue in a spiritual wrestling match with Chopin crafting one of the most beautiful melodies of all time. This is as informative as it is inspiring in that he crafts both the melody and some lyrics while verbally guiding another human to create a very un-Bee Gees arrangement and chord progression, as opposed to the typical 4-5 chord progression. Ironically this audio was used as evidence in a copyright case that they won against someone claiming they stole the song. Thanks for sharing🤩
i won't say it is an un-Bee Gees arrangement... Take a look to I could not love you more, Run to me, Someone belonging to someone, Heart like mine and then tell me...
Wow! I'm so addicted watching everything about the Bee Gees! Thank you for posting this raw session. Indeed, the Bee Gees were so genius, talented and gifted.
It is wonderful to hear how these guys gave birth to this song. The workings are beautiful in there own right. Yet, it is hard to hear the melody and then backtracking and lots of near misses. This is how they create. It is a privilege to “be in the room”.
God given talent. Magic, Sublime.. Melody. This how a Classic song is born. Wow!! Thanks Barry, Late Maurice and Robin for giving us these mesmerising Songs. God Bless!!
What other approach would a songwriter have? I should think most artists of any kind start with an idea they think they can work with and no doubt find that some ideas don't work.. I don't deny that he was a very talented song writer.
Wow wow wow - I have loved this song since I first heard it - pretty much brought tears to my eyes - as a songwriter I've always wondered how they came up with this song...and here it is...what a beautifully crafted melody. They were such amazingly patient writers.
Mine too in 2011! Unfortunately my wife passed away this year. We had a magical 10 years together. I come back to this song often as it reminds me of that first dance and being so in love. Thank you Bee Gees.
I was sitting here thinking " wow, this has really got a Stevie Wonder vibe to it, and it's the kind of thing you would hear Stevie do; like some of the vocal runs etc..." And then I hear someone say, 'that little bit of Stevie Wonder was nice'... that blew me away! Love these guys, and love them even more now I realize they were fans of Stevie too. Have to wonder whether Stevie enjoyed their music; it wouldn't surprise me at all.
iv'e played music for about 47 years, at about 11 years old i had a Bee Gees song book that i learned to play guitar, iv'e just gotta get a message, run to me, new york mining disaster 1941, to love somebody, nights on broadway..etc, so many great songs!
Really interesting to listen to the different ways the song could have gone. It makes me much more glad they found the magic melody that made it a number 1 hit.
Most of the scraps that didn’t make it into this song could have been hits themselves. Song is an absolute masterpiece and to me is the greatest song ever written.
It always intrigues me, how a complete song which had been such a part of our lives, was put together from scratch. How do these geniuses do it? Does the music come first, or the lyrics? It just amazes me how they start from a blank piece of paper, and end up with such a work of art that becomes an evergreen part of our lives 🤗❤️
It can be either, or. As a songwriter myself, I can tell you that inspiration can come from anywhere and hit you at any time… Even when you’re sleeping… some little sound, A picture, a cloud rolling by in the sky. You just never know what’s going to be your next hit. Sometimes it can manifest itself as music first, others the lyrics or at least the beginnings of what will be. A lot of musicians will tell you that it’s almost like a fleeting gift from God. Somethings that if you don’t write down or record, will escape you just as fast as it was dropped on your lap or your mind. Michael Jackson used to say that if he didn’t wake up at 3 AM and write down these ideas he got while he was sleeping… in his dreams, that God would give them to Prince. And he was absolutely serious. Knowing that songs that artists will know or at least perceive are radio gold, only come so often. To the point I’ve almost making you feel like you found a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Or the proverbial needle in a haystack. If you’re interested, I can walk you through it sometime via a video chat or something. Show you how the process can work and usually does. The inspiration that can hit meant any given moment, that not only affects musicians, but also painters, actors, comedians… Pretty much any creative mind. It seemingly always works the same. It’s all about capturing that lightning in a bottle, something that Michael Jackson tried to do by constantly… looking to emulate or surpass the success of the Thriller album. Something he could never do, that really ate away at him throughout his life. Which I’m sure had a tremendous effect on him being able to enjoy the moment of any success he had since that album. Which is a shame. Regardless, like anything else in life, it’s all about timing and the talent to finish what you started so that others can enjoy what you create. Feel like they are taking that trip with you through the song. Which is another talent altogether. Being able to write a song that stands a range of emotions, lyrics that can mean different things to different people yeah keep them interested as if everybody was on the same page as to the true meeting that you wrote. Those songs are the ones that last not only your lifetime, but many lifetimes after you. Handed down through generations, for which the words never age. They simply become the soundtrack of a scene or anthem for certain moments in peoples lives, something they listen to and hold onto their entire existence, and probably hear up to and during their last breath. It’s what keeps many songwriters writing. Whether it’s one person or millions that you reach, knowing you created it and did… It means the world.
I think they started with the music in their hearts and brains and they found someone to plays the chords they vocalized. Barry never learned to read music I think. 022123
It’s inspiring to think how the three little boys starting singing together for fun and passion. Barry was given a guitar for Christmas when he was nine,I think. The twins were six, I think. They were always together from then on. They played and sang from then on. So hard to imagine and yet I felt I was there. I was born in 1944 just two years before Barry. 022123
No wonder why this song sound so good..it was made with too much patience with the collaboration of talented creators. The success of this song was credited to all who patiently shared their ideas to make it and make it sound the way it was heard as a song.👍👍👍

Such talented guys! I love The Bee Gees; always have and always will! To me there will never be another group like them! Their music touches your heart and soul
I recall watching an interview with Barry shortly after Robin passed and - while I don't recall what the interviewer asked - it suddenly struck Barry that his whole family had gone. Papa Hugh had died years ago; but Andy, Maurice then Robin and Mama Babs had just recently passed.... and that fact hit him like a load of bricks. He actually had to stop the interview. I really felt for the guy.
Wonderful to hear how they conduct a writing session.! And what is more unbelievable is that the Bee Gees could not read music! Fantastic songwriters! Bee Gees Forever! ❤️❤️❤️
As were his sadly departed twins. All 3 have been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame because, no, it was not just Barry doing the heavy lifting. As a good comparison try checking out Barry's solo work and comparing it with the Bee Gees and I think it points to him not being as good alone as he was with the twins. That is true of all of them but when Robin made an album, his record company released it at least. (Robin was the only one of them who had even a mild success as a solo artist,) wrote a lot of great songs and I don't suggest he deserves none of the credit anymore than I would say that he deserves all the blame for their occasional missteps.
@@beeharbour - I love Robin's solo stuff. He had a couple of huge hits as a solo artist in Europe. Unfortunately that was during the era where the Bee Gees were more or less blackballed in the US after SNF due to overexposure so his songs never got played there. He beat Barry to the punch having the first solo hit with "Saved by the Bell" when he left the group. "Massachusetts" was his baby along with "I started a joke" and "My world". When Barry and Robin heard Massachusetts, Barry said their mouths dropped open. Even then the record company tried to throw ball bearings under Robin's feet and stop his songs from being played out of spite for him leaving the Bee Gees. Robin's last solo album released posthumously had several beautiful and heartrending songs that made me cry. He was ill and the voice not quite as strong as when he was young but you knew instantly it was Robin. So sad that his beautiful voice is silenced.
I like a lot of Barry's solo stuff, and although I like Robin's voice with the brothers, I find I can't listen to a whole song with just his voice except for I started a joke (which I love btw). Sorry if this offends Robin fans but that's MY honest opinion.
Right around 3:19 that chord change is exactly Stephan Bishop's 1981 hit It Might Be You "and there's so much love to make..." This came way before that song and really is a unique classic as far as melodies go, absolutely fantastic.
I can only imagine what it must feel to these magnificent songwriters when finally they have the finished product. Is many of their songs pure mastery. Magnificent!
I have just survived 6 weeks of hell in an understaffed kitchen at work. I would gladly be willing to pay for a subscription to how the bee gees wrote certain songs. It's the most soothing thing I've ever listened to or seen. And God knows I need some soothing right about now. I have a dinner date tomorrow, but I'm a cook, so I insist on doing the cooking. It will be theraputic. Because I'll be damned if my date pays a huge dinner tab and I take one bite and I taste Sysco. I'd rather make nice food myself and just enjoy his company.
This has actually become one of my favorites. I hope more of these are posted. Amazing to hear how a Melody becomes a song. Seems to have a mowtown feel I can almost imagine Stevie wonder singing it the way Barry is playing with it.

RiP to all his brothers, starting with Andy. We are so lucky to have their music in our lives.

Bee Gees, people scoff but as songwriters they were amazing, so many classics. Their vocal harmonies were equal to anything the Beatles did
Lol, In the 80’s when they fell out of favor I was in my teenage years and when I heard them I was still secretly in love with the music (You knownhow teenagers can be) years later early 200’s I was out at a club and they played Stayin Alive and to me it blew any of the modern stuff away. Recently in a department store and heard You Should Be Dancing, thinking about how a 40 Plus year old record crushes everything in its path . As far as the Beatles, dare I say their songwriting is right on Par with them.
This is pure gold, how they hone the melody, the chord progression, snippets of the lyrics, the vocal harmonies... until it clicks.
And they do it so FAST!
Its incredible

It was so bittersweet to see Blue Weaver tear up while discussing the making of this song in the HBO Bee Gees Documentary.
Today they have phones, tablets, Netflix..... but we had the music... this and How Can You Mend A Breaking 💓 are my favourite Bee Gee songs.. thank you Barry Robin and Maurice

This is music solid gold... a heavenly treasure....43 years back... what a masterpiece...wow....
Barry's voice is so beautiful, what a gift for us!
It's wonderful that they recorded their writing sessions. This classic alone. I wish more of my favorite artists had done this. Barry is a genius. This was truly a great era for popular music.
At 6:26 the song is starting to be born and then, at 7:24 and afterword, the song is born. It made me cry.
la migliore canzone di sempre, mi ricordo quando uscì l'ascoltavamo dalle radio in continuazione, semplicemente stupenda
I’ve always loved hearing in interviews how they came up with their songs and getting to listen to this is an absolute treat. They were some of the very best songwriters and my favourite band! I’m so grateful to have been on this planet at the same time as the Bee Gees.
Agree! The songwriting process seems so mysterious
On the same planet....
absolutely. no doubt about it.
The HBO documentary has a great explanation from Blue Weaver of how this song came to be. Pure chills.
Absolutely one of a kind
their songs lasts generations, you never get tired of hearing them, forever beautiful, forever a classic.
Hello my friend
Amazing to hear them keep going over the chorus, looking for that last chord but not finding it (in the end it would become a minor 7th chord on the sub-dominant ........ the vocalist keeps singing the minor third of that chord but the pianinst hasn't picked up on it yet) ........ we're hearing magic happen in real time!
Funny how Barry Gibb is never in the conversation when discussing greatest lead singers ever. He was a musical monster.
He wasn't even the best singer in the Bee Gee. He did have a very good voice indeed though.
@@beeharbour he was blessed with two amazing back up singers, incredible harmony. But there’s a reason they put him out front.
What a fantastic glimpse of greatness!! ❤❤❤
The birth of the one of the most loved songs.
It’s crazy to listen to this and knowing where this song ended up…Barry is a musical genius. Love the Bee Gees always.
Still listening to this wonderful song in 2020! Love hearing how songs like this came together. The Bee Gees music will live on forever.
Such beautiful talent...amazing to listen to.
Wow! I'm so addicted watching everything about the Bee Gees! Thank you for posting this raw session. Indeed, the Bee Gees were so genius, talented and gifted.

It's really amazing to hear their process. Wow! Great job Maurice for reading Barry's mind.
Zbožňujem túto pesničku ,Bee Gees láska navždy❤❤❤❤
Even in its early stage it's already very beautiful. The melody is fantastic. Thank you Bee Gees.
God Bless!!

Wow Barry really is a visionary. He intuitively knows where he wants the song to go. You can feel his intensity.
Terra Hoskins that's how you write songs. They just don't come out instantly. You need to keep working it and change lyrics as it goes

What can be said that hasn't been said already. These beloved and talented brothers are still the best of the best, on so many levels.....
Songwriting at its best
...and the whole song's beauty was already there, with just a piano and their amazing voices.

Wow! The creative process of the BeeGees.
The beautiful creation of our wedding song!! Even in 1997 when we got married this was the best song to dance to as our first dance, a 70s classic!
Mine too in 2011! Unfortunately my wife passed away this year. We had a magical 10 years together. I come back to this song often as it reminds me of that first dance and being so in love. Thank you Bee Gees.
I was sitting here thinking " wow, this has really got a Stevie Wonder vibe to it, and it's the kind of thing you would hear Stevie do; like some of the vocal runs etc..."
And then I hear someone say, 'that little bit of Stevie Wonder was nice'... that blew me away!
Love these guys, and love them even more now I realize they were fans of Stevie too. Have to wonder whether Stevie enjoyed their music; it wouldn't surprise me at all.
Stevie performed at The Grammys Bee Gees tribute show in 2017, so I would think he does appreciate their music!
Barry Gibb has gone on record many times citing Stevie Wonder as one of his main influences.
They been successful ...but they deserve it because they been hard working even if well gifted ! I miss them so deeply !😢
This is literally one of my favorite videos! Incredible song, and the genesis of it is so cool to see...

They always wrote the music first, then the lyrics.
I heard an interview with Barry and he said they came up with the music first and then came up with the lyrics. They are amazing!
Omg what a treat that was....thanks!
