He definitely hit the note! Does it sound like the studio version? No. Does it matter? In my opinion it doesn't. James had issues with his voice in the past and needed to adjust his singing to fit his new voice, which anyone who ever tried to re-learn a skill in a different way will confirm, is really difficult to do and I find it admirable that James pushed through his struggles instead of just letting someone else front DT. Apart from that I think that novelty and stuff not sounding exactly like on the record is a really good thing (as long as it is tasteful, not saying that bands should just butcher their songs live, because that way it would sound different as well).
Damn, in 2017 he had become worse and I thought he would never get back at it but the last videos of him singing are incredible! He's almost as good as the studio version (and as the first live shows) after 30 years, at 58! It's unbelievable
It's a lot easier to do when you are at home, taking all the time you need to properly breathe and focus on the notes. It's a comfort level that you cannot always afford during a live performance, when you must adhere to the song's tempo, you are moving across the stage, maybe it's the 15th song you're singing, you need to drink, and you're fucking 60 LOL That being said, kudos to him for enduring so much in as such a tremendously demanding role as being DT's singer is. Love.

There were few periods in time when James was physically out of shape - Black Clouds & Silver Linings comes to mind. Its probably a combination of motivation and circumstances in the band at times that he allows himself to lead his instrument in a bad shape.
I’m not sure why there’s always such a fascination with the voice of a singer changing over time. He’s so much more skilful and expressive in recent albums. I’d rather hear that than the few extra notes he used to be able to hit
He’s an amazing singer when he well rested. I saw him in Austin and he just seemed so tired. It’s a real shame that he works so hard and the fans just make fun of him half the time.
