    Thank you so much for your videos! I learned more from you than my MBA. I wish I found you in 2012, not 11 years later. ❤

    Coming to this video series in 2017 and the information is truly timeless! You can clearly see that a value investor has a much higher chance of being continuously successful throughout market highs and lows. Thank you so much for taking the time to simplify the teachings of the great value investors! You deserve way more of a following. Oh well, more for us. :)

    Yes Preston, this is really general and basic, but that is exactly what I need!!! Thank you very much. That is the level I am at, and the level at which one can build a very solid foundation. Keep it up. I am planning to re-watch all videos again as soon as I finish.

      I have a question. Don't you think dividend received from stocks that the company holds should be listed under investing activities instead of operating activities?

    What if the Net change in cash is negative? Is that a good thing or a bad thing? (What do you think the Net change in cash should be in? Negative or positive number?)

    • @orestesdd

      ***** I am currently looking at WFC cash flow statement, and through 2014 quarters, WFC had a net cash going up and down; in fact this is what happened in 2014: Q1 was (188); Q2 was 904; Q3 was (2,603); and Q4 was 1,539, all in USD millions. is this an acceptable behaviour? I ask this because WFC is one of Warren Buffett's darling, and I so happened worked for WFC for 23 years. Should this be alarming? BTW, I also looked at a 5 year period, and its behaviour was very similar with a net cash change being down 3 years out of all 5 years (2010-2014), but it operating activities were UP all 5 years, except for 2012 when it was low , 13,665 in USD millions, when all the other years were above that amount. Thanks for all your videos.

    how do you use discounted cash flow to value a company from the information in the cashflow statement?

  • @CE-vd2px
    @CE-vd2px 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    does having parentheses around the investing activities and financing activities mean the number is negative? I thought u said we want negative investing and financial activities. Can explain?

    • @rossmurphy4593
      @rossmurphy4593 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes. Parentheses are often used to indicate negative balances.

    The beginning of the video sort of implies that incoming money is either accounted for in the income statement or in the cash flow statement. But isn't the most usual case that both statements will disclose the transaction that affect income as well as cash flow?

    Preston,
    In the example of the company B, which has a really large amount in the 'Net Change in Cash', why would a company keep all that money in Cash year after year?
    I understood that if they're a healthy company they might be preparing for an acquisition, but if they're not so healthy, wouldn't it make more sense for them to either pay off some of its debt or even use it to invest in something rather than keeping as cash?
    Great videos!! I bought the book already, so that's next :)

  • @satheeshr5556

    Hi - These videos are very helpful, thank you.
    Just a basic question , whats this "Operating Activities", is this the "Net Earnings" ?

  • @abhideepkumar3585
    @abhideepkumar3585 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    hey, it means current EPS(earning per share) is not main criteria, because company B increasing current eps by increasing debt or lowering invest in new technology which cause eps down in future.
    So, CASH FLOW STATEMENT is very important for any company.

  • @martinfalk772
    @martinfalk772 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks again for these videos Preston, very helpful! You say that a negative number is good when it comes to investing activities. But the company could be doing bad investments that will get you a loss no? It feels like it doesnt has to be good.

    • @sanjeen2503
      @sanjeen2503 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably it's a good sign in the sense the company is willing to take the risk of investing, which means they are having surplus cash and see a good future.
      Although it might be possible that they made a stupid investment decision, a good company has less chances of doing so (unless they were finance companies)

  • @whoeverwhoever400

    so company A is better than B even they have less cash in their hand at the end of the year?

    First of all these playlists are amazing! Secondly i have a question regarding the investment organisations like ASSET MANAGEMENT COMPANY and BANKS.
    They have high D/E Ratio and Negative cash flow from operations and positive investment and financial activities.
    What do you suggest i should look for while investing in AMCs and Banks? Thank you.

      Simply follow Warren Buffett's 3rd rule: If you don't understand a company, better don't invest in that.

    It is difficult when all the numbers are 100 to start with. It is much easier to follow if the Income, Bonds and Shares etc had different numbers to start with. Maybe also something a bit more realistic, such as the Income being 2400, the bond being 300 and the shares 100.
