He was honest about how badly he treated his first wife. She was a good woman and he did her dirty. Adultery wasn't smiled on and laughed off like it is today and it cost both him and June.

@@lordsatanicus1622 He relapsed and cheated several times during their marriage. And she had an addiction to pain killers during the last 10 years of her life according to their son. Johnny Cash was like a black hole. He even got his daughter Cindy addicted to drugs. Various members of the Cash family made a documentary about how drug addiction messed up their lives and she was on it saying he gave her narcotics for a headache and that's what started her lifelong addiction to drugs. That karma was heavy.

June Carter (member of "The First Family of Country Music") wrote this song about the extramarital affair she was having with Johnny Cash. June, Mother Maybelle, and June's sisters Anita and Helen (aka "The Carter Family") were the 4 backup singers in this video. June's sister Anita (2nd from the left) recorded the original version of "Ring of Fire" in 1962. When it failed to chart, Johnny reworked the song slightly, added the mariachi horns, and turned it into one of the biggest hits of his career. The affair continued for years until June and Johnny were married (after both of them divorced their spouses.) Walking out on his wife and 4 kids was some of that "Hurt" that Cash sang about in his final (confessional) song.

Eventually divorced and married June Carter. He also got a lot of bad press at the time because it was assumed that his first wife was black. She was Italian. Those times were something else. 😔

Music executives thought it was daring to use horns on a country song and pressured Johnny to rework the song. Johnny said he had a dream one night. In the dream instead of performing the original version June wrote, he saw himself on stage with the horn section and heard the "new" version. Needless to say, Johnny kept the horns. The song became a sensation back in the day, one of his best selling.
Preparation H wanted to use the song for their hemorrhoid ointment commercials. His son and daughters flat out refused. Would have been a popular commercial, though!

Here is a love song that Johnny Cash recorded in tribute to his first wife. It was not released in the 1950s at the time, because the song was too short in time duration. It was finally released many years later as part of his Time-Life Music CD box set of Johnny Cash's Sun Records Recordings. The title of the song is "You're My Baby (Little Wooly Booger)". Some people thought that at the time that Johnny Cash's first wife was black, because of her dark skin color and "wooly" hair. But she was not black. She was Italian. An item of note about the recording; there are a few "false starts" on this recording, before Johnny Cash sings the song all the way through. Ruthie Foster does an interesting version of this classic song. There's a excellent live performance of her interpretation available.

All that man had to go was that little self intro, "Hello, I'm Johny Cash." He was old enough to be my father and some but it really got to me.

Though June Carter Cash wrote this song, the Spanish horns came to Johnny in a dream he had about the song so he added them when they recorded the song
